- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

I'd would be asking a million question of the history of how the different stones got there by what bigger boulders did they reside in...you'd probably be giving me Rock's by then cause then I'd be so out of breathe carrying them I'd wouldnt be able to ask questions... and I'd be weighted down by all the gorgeous rocks. I could finally use all my pockets in my jeans, backpack and pail maybe I could attach a clip and bag to my wellies🤔😀...lol ..lol..I'm mean I love them rocks even if they arent tumbled...😷👋

As usual, I’m giddy with excitement looking ahead w you at the beach stones. I even lean into my iPad. Sick huh? Then, suddenly you stop and You pick up a phenomenal stone. You say “that’s a cool stone”. I’m gazing at the beauty in your hand when my heart drops like a pudding stone in the middle of Lake Michigan on the coldest of the coldest day in the history of our era (whatever that is). You release it, “Not what I’m looking for today”. Arggggggggggg! Sigh….well, at the very least I owe you big-time for the joy of the walk and the education you provide. Just gettin started, Karyn If I should ever find one that you left behind, what do I need to do to ID said stone?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 года назад
Don't let the ones I release bother you. Think of it as catch and release. I have a few books that I own listed in my Amazon storefront in the description of this video. They will help you identify some really common rocks. But don't expect them to help you identify everything. There's a huge variety of rocks that have been deposited in Michigan by glaciers. Another thing I do to identify rocks is post them on some Facebook pages. One of my go-to groups is "Great Lakes Rocks & Minerals". You'll get a lot of people making funny comments or bad guesses, but there will also be a few decent hints. You won't get answers to all of you questions there, but it is a good starting point before doing more research.

My daughter and I have frequently met others coming off the beach, saying they were ‘skunked’, and have then gone out to pick and found some nice stones! I think other people have different perspectives, and together with wave action, the beach is always turning over. Plus, I’ve gone over areas I’ve already checked, and been lucky.🤷🏻‍♀️😊

I enjoy the zen feel of your videos. The quiet, the waves rippling, kayak paddle sounds, the stillness of the drone. And of course the rocks. Nice work. Virtual rock hunts. Thanks
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 года назад
Thanks Rich. None of that is ever done on purpose. I mean I go on rock hunts on purpose, but all the calming sounds just happen. The drone isn't quite as silent as in my videos. It's really not loud at all, but does make a buzzing sound when it's close. Of course there is no microphone for that reason, so I always record a minute of waves to play over it. So I guess that part takes a little more planning.

You’re a pro Rob thanks for such a beautiful jaunt along the banks of the lake my friend. 🙏 That blue stuff is amazing. When you say slag where did that come from? I'm probably not nearly as calm as I sound in my videos. I actually think I sound sort of boring. I don't show nearly as much enthusiasm as you do in your videos. I love your enthusiasm. I think I need another person to talk to instead of taking at my camera. Someday maybe I'll drive to your place and hunt with you for the day. The Leland Lake Superior Iron Company used to be in Leland in the 1800's. They smelted Iron and the slag was the waste material that got thrown in the lake. Someone must have had the great idea to clean it up by marketing it for use in jewelry. Now everyone goes and picks up the industrial waste for fun. www.lelandmi.com/about/leland-blue-stones.html

I may be your biggest fan just sayin 😁 Wow! Okay that’s really cool. So I’ve always thought for some reason the only colour associated with iron is orange. But this has made some sense of something I’ve been wondering. Whenever I find an agate or chalcedony that’s blue or bluish, it’s usually partnered with or come from red basalt, or what I’m guessing is basalt with heaps of iron in it but it never made sense. Now it does! Well, more than it did before haha 🤪 Man I wish you a brilliant week ahead and look forward to catching up soon mate!

Hi Carol. Thanks for saying all that nice stuff about my videos. I had trouble finding the beach the first time I was here, but I think I found it on Google Maps for you. I'm pretty sure that I parked on North Street. The beach access only has room for about two cars. It's a shady little spot that you really have to look for to see. North Beach isn't very long and I found the good stuff by getting past that break wall at the end of it. I was told that it's hard to get around that if the water is rough. I had to wade around it, but it was no problem with waders and calm water. Van's Beach is on the other side of the river and is worth going to also. The end of that beach was blocked by high water and fallen trees and I didn't get around it on the rough day I was there. Here's a link to Google Maps where I think North Beach is: goo.gl/maps/aacd14VexAzQdew9A

That part of Leland is called "Fish Town". They have some little food shops there in the summer. I used to juggle in the hall between classes when I was teaching. Sometimes a kid would come by and say "I can juggle two" or "I can juggle too". I could never tell which. It's easier in print. Were you doing the two in one hand? To actually be considered juggling you need to have more objects than the hands juggling them.

@@sparband Nah, you could learn. Most people who say that they can juggle two do it the hard way. I taught lots of kids to juggle over the years and almost none of them ever learned to juggle a shower pattern, which is where the balls go around in a circle. The cascade pattern is much easier. That's where every ball is lobbed up in the air to the other hand. Nothing is passed straight across the bottom, like you're likely doing. Now I feel the need to make a "how to juggle" video.

Are you from Alpena, or are you just stalking me? How did you hear that? I used to have a little juggling club at the school I worked at. Then my son and I started unicycling there in the evenings. We did the Fourth of July parade for quite a few years. One year, I walked the whole parade route backwards because we had a four person club passing pattern going. I was a little tired at the end, but the next couple days my calves hurt a lot. Apparently walking backwards uses different muscles than walking forward. Here's the unicycle group: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hKkKVEou_VE.html

The varying shades of blues greens and greys from the water and sky are beautiful. Especially when the sun comes out. And the driftwood shapes are so interesting. Yes, the rocks are like gems, but it’s the whole adventure. Always seems like you’re on a deserted island. Cool finds. Will you be tumbling them? I always thought slag was a waste product of glass making? I may have missed your explanation. Nice juggling, too! Lol. Thanks for the video.

I'm not sure if I'll tumble them or not. It's a good possibility. This slag is from an iron smelting industry that was here in the 1800s.

You're definitely not wrong about better chances for Fun Stuff in deeper water. I'm just north of Chicago and all my best finds come during the summer months when I can dive or snorkel for 'em. I'm hoping to get out to Leland someday for some real Leland blue-- much as I like the minty green slag we get around here, that bright blue is just (chef's kiss) so much prettier.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 года назад
When I have snorkeled for rocks I find that there's a lot of sediment or algae out deeper. I usually hunt out ten or twelve feet and then the rocks start to be all the same color because they're covered in silt or something.

Well I finally had a chance to watch the video all the way through,..I'm really jealous of your Leland blue finds. My wife and I spent the better part of a 12 hour day bouncing from beach to beach there and found pebbles of it. You should consider yourself very lucky to find those that size and with good blue color. Now if you get a chance head into and around Frankfort,for some Frankfort greens,..just like the Leland's but green. Very cool to find!..you had a pretty EPIC day friend!!..nice to see you enjoy my side of the state!!.. and a majority of the Petoskeys I pick up are just like the one you picked up at the very end of your video,the keeper you said. Yes!!.. I'd keep that one too!!...great video!!..if you're ever in Manistee gimme an email,I'll show you to a few secret places only use local rockhounds know about. Cool stuff there!

I went to the Point Betsie Lighthouse later that day. I was going to go into Frankfort, but a woman at the lighthouse said that there are no rocks or slag in Frankfort.
