Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

@@doniharper4624 I know of a lot of good beaches, but nothing near Detroit. The closest to Detroit I have hunted is Harrisville, about 3.5 hours north. If you're interested in northern Michigan beaches, I have a lot of videos on my channel. If you let me know somewhere in the northern lower peninsula or the U.P. that you'd like more information on, I can list a few locations and videos to watch.

The odds were actually pretty good. I knew I left it above where the water and ice were likely to get it. At 10:20, the rock you picked is a ferriferous (iron-rich) layered sandstone. Even though, it has been hardened/compacted for billions of years, it is still a sedimentary rock, and this is why it never polishes well in the tumbler since its particles get loose once the matrix is weakened. Thank you

That's kind of why they're called puddingstones. By your description, they would have been named bread stones.

Rock found at 13:16 is jasper. It shows the typical colors and layering that shows that this rock was formed via silica-rich hydrothermal activity in different successive episodes, and it happened to carry different amounts of iron and sometimes other cations in each episode resulting in this layered color pattern.

I just made a couple of heart pendants from that rock and they turned out really well. It sure polished like a hard rock, such as jasper.

I'm reading The End of Nature by Bill McKibben. From 1989, one thing it explains is that when we just occupy our car, work, home, etc. spaces, we don't see or interact with nature, and soon we forget nature entirely. Not happening to Michigan Rocks!
@MichiganRocks

And I don't explore nature nearly as much as I should. I see new things all the time when I'm out.

You're right about the mudstone.....it's easy to see them as a beginner tumbler and think that it might tumble nicely and have all of those cool lines in them but you learn quickly just how soft they are and then avoid them. Cool looking rocks with large sizes but like many, the most interesting to tumble tend to be the small ones - more bang for your tumbling $$$. Love the Unakite....I pass on most of the Puddingstones I find (although I see that a lot of people love them) unless they are unusual with lots of Jasper. Your Petoskey's tend to be larger than what we find on the Canadian side of Huron near Kincardine but like what's in the video - the smaller tend to be the better - thanks for letting us walk with you.

I have tumbled mudstone, but it's not easy to do, and they don't get super shiny like harder rocks. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7poV_x1POJ8.html

Rob, I love the new gloves and waders! You're quite stylish on the Mystery Beach. You are so fortunate to have that permission. Wow, the Puddingstones abounded and your luck changed on the Petoskeys, too. I've trained my ears to hear the "thunk" as you drop the rocks not taken. You show great restraint. As always, fantastic footage with the drone. Glad you took us all along for this trip. I'll bet that water was VERY cold even with your new waders. Thanks for the Spring Adventure. Glad the rock was almost still where you left it last fall -- I was one who chided you and will take it all back now. Love those circles!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 года назад
The cold water never seems to bother my feet, even when there's ice floating in it. My hands are what gets cold. They got cold a couple times that day, but the gloves worked pretty well. I had to hustle to get to where I wanted to fly the drone before the wind came up. I have a hard time walking down the beach without looking at rocks. I tried to keep my eyes up to walk about a mile to fly the drone. I made it just in time to get a flight in and the wind came up soon after.

Lake Superior offers such beautiful, mostly untouched, wild, shorelines. The lake itself is both awesome to behold, but terrifying and deadly. It is NOT a location where I would want to find myself stranded or injured and then have to face a night alone there on the shore. Michigan is the THIRD COAST of the USA and all of it is freshwater coastline. Some areas have reported SASQUATCH sightings. Yikes!!!!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 года назад
The beach in this video is on Lake Huron, but I hunt Lake Superior too. I wouldn't want to spend a night on the beach either, but I do carry some matches and a Swiss army knife in my backpack just in case I need to start a fire.
@faerieSAALE
@faerieSAALE 2 года назад
@@MichiganRocks Lake Huron also offers a wonderful coastline - in places. The areas around Saginaw and the bay there are foul and polluted. Black flies and deer ticks infest many state parks. More North, it is sporadic between sandy manmade beaches and the natural rocky coast. I have always been very surprised that prime areas that overlook that lake are not built up or hot areas for development. But - the lack of successful commercial business ventures impedes any real development. It is, of course, a boon for rockhounds if they know where to look. I hate the humongous open-pit cement mine in Alpena... it is an ecological disaster. Somewhere in Michigan, there is a Fossil Hunting Quarry that is open to the public for a short time...I can't remember the name of it. Do know where I am talking about?
@MichiganRocks
