BRAND NEW ITEM. Must see even if you don't buy.
The XTOOL D7W is the FIRST affordable scan tool to use a WiFi VCI instead of Bluetooth. This means the wireless connection between the vehicle and the scan tool is utilizing WiFi technology instead of Bluetooth technology. Which, to me, is a really big deal! WiFi is light years ahead of Bluetooth in terms of speed, bandwidth, and wireless range. In this video I do a range test and I get very impressive results. I will probably do another video in the near future to determine maximum distance of the WiFi VCI but I ran out of room in this video and I still had a rock solid wireless connection between the scan tool and the VCI. (plugged into my vehicle) The new D7W is the wireless version of the D7S. Both are brand new models from XTOOL and they are both excellent scan tools. Okay, sure, there are SOME other scan tools in this world that DO use WiFi..... but those are few and far ultra high end tools that cost thousands of dollars. This tool is the first AFFORDABLE full bidirectional control scan tool that the majority of people can actually buy. In my opinion this is one of the biggest advancements in the entire scan tool industry since scan tools became Android based. I suspect all other scan tool manufacturers will be scrambling to design their own WiFi VCIs now that XTOOL has released this new D7W. This WILL become the new standard for all scan tools, eventually... If you've been looking at new scan tools, this one is definitely worth taking a second look at. The D7 series of scan tools has always had excellent value (maybe the best value of all scan tools) when you consider their overall functionality VS price..... and now with a WiFi VCI, it's an even better value.
Thanks for watching.

I just got this D7W last night during Amazon's Black Friday sale. $449 and i finally gave in and enrolled in Amazon prime. I've been resisting, Jeff Bezos you evil genius. I've been looking at scanners for a while and the wifi is what convinced me over the D8 and the IP819. Can't wait unti i get it tomorrow. 2 days guaranteed delivery. *Thank* you Jeff.

I think you will be very happy with the new D7W. It's pretty cool! I will say.... they are coming out with a D8W but of course it will be even more money. The D7 is really in the sweet spot when it comes to overall functionality VS price. It's really hard to beat.... and now having the first WIFI VCI with an affordable scan tool makes it even better! Congrats and enjoy! Thanks for the comment.

I own the xtool d8 bt with 38 special functions.... Biderectional activations .... Topology mapping.... And it works on My phone through Hot spot....
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 7 месяцев назад
Using a hotspot and the number of special functions is not what makes this new scan tool special. I think you need to watch the video for more information. And just to be clear, there is a new D8W coming also.... the D7W was the first one to hit the warehouse so by default it became the "first" to use a Fifi VCI instead of a Bluetooth VCI like your D8BT. (hence the BT portion of the D8BT name)

I would imagine that if you used an extension cable to get the VCI up on the dash or hang it over the visor or something that you get an even stronger WiFi connection. Not like you need it though.😉

Thanks for clarifying about "wifi direct", that was one on my misunderstandings when first learning about the D7W. Now that you have used both the D7S and the D7W, do you see ANY difference in performance between the cabled version and this wifi version ? such as speed, response time {refresh rate), device freezing up, etc.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 7 месяцев назад
I haven't really noticed a huge difference.... Other than one tool is wireless and one is corded and that makes a big difference, to me anyway. I've only had the D7W for roughly a week and I haven't had much time to really get into things while using it. Also, the speed of the connection will only be as fast as the slowest link and usually that is the speed of the computer in the vehicle. The computer in your typical vehicle is not very fast (in my opinion) and the speed of the WiFi connection between the tool and the vehicle is MUCH faster. When you select a function, and the scan tool sits there for seconds (to minutes) before the next screen pops up, that delay is usually caused by the slow computer in the vehicle and therefore the WiFi connection is irrelevant. The main reason why I love the WiFi VCI is because it provides a rock steady, solid connection and I don't have to worry about walking to the other side of the shop or to my desk and dropping the connection. I also don't have to wonder if the delay in data is caused by a Shltty Bluetooth connection, or if it's genuinely caused by a slow computer in the vehicle. And lastly, once the computer in the vehicle spits out the requested data, there will be no delay in displaying that data on the screen of the tool. Even if that delay was minimal with Bluetooth, that delay will be gone with WiFi. Think about watching live data PIDs.... if the vehicle is slow to report, then there is nothing you can do about that.... But, once the vehicle does spit out the info, I want it on the screen ASAP.... And having a WiFi connection allows for this to happen. It's just an all around better connection. It's just one more step in making a better product. Thanks

Does this tool have the capability of connecting to the FCA bypass connector ? Also can the unit be charged by the obd2 (vci) if the tablet battery is low or dead ?
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 7 месяцев назад
No FCA AutoAuth yet but I suspect that will come sooner rather than later. The 12+8 cable is the alternative until AutoAuth comes along. If this was a wired unit, meaning... a wire connecting between the VCI and the scan tool itself, then yes it would charge the tablet. However, there is NOT a wire connecting the tablet to the VCI, or anything else, so no there is no way to charge this tablet via the VCI. That would require a wired connection. Thanks for the question.

@SlipFitGarage I didn't think so, but I just wanted to make sure. I have a 2020 ram 2500, so I'd need the FCA connection. Thank you for answering my questions so quickly.

@SlipFitGarage 7 месяцев назад
@@karres73 You're welcome. If you need FCA AutoAuth, then you'll need to look at Autel, OTOFIX (which IS Autel) or Launch. If I was in your shoes, OTOFIX would be the way to go in my opinion. It's full Autel software, sold by Autel, but you get 2 years of free updates instead of one, and the scan tools themselves are a bit cheaper. I have a Black Friday Scan Tool video coming out tomorrow morning at 9am central time that shows the two OTOFIX scan tools that I recommend... and they will all be on sale thru Cyber Monday, and they will be the beast deals of the year. Thanks!

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 7 месяцев назад
That is item number one on the graphic that I provided at the 2:45 mark.... 36+ functions.... But not all of them work on the same car at the same time. That's really marketing wank. This is a full bidirectional scan tool. Any function the vehicle requires that you're currently plugged into should be on the scan tool. That can change from vehicle to vehicle. Thanks for the question.

I’ve purchased the D7W and it will not connect to WiFi. I get the red light on the VCI but no connection light. So far very disappointed. Do you have any ideas? I’ve contacted Xtool but they are not in the office for the Chinese new year. Much appreciated for any inputs. Thank you Artie. 👍

The VCI connects directly to the scan tool using a radio connection. The TYPE of radio connection used is the WiFi protocol, instead of the Bluetooth protocol. The VCI dongle itself does not connect to your home wireless router. You are not trying to connect the VCi to your "network" like you would with almost every other Wifi device. You will not see the VCI listed in your WiFi configuration page when searching for available wifi networks. Try this, from the home page of your scan tool, click the "more" button..... Then Click "VCI managment".... you should be able to see the status of the VCI connection on this page. Be sure the serial number under "available device" matches the serial number that is printed on the back of the VCI itself. The VCI adapter MUST be plugged into a vehicle while trying to connect. It gets the electricity that it needs to operate from the DLC port in the vehicle. If it's not plugged into the vehicle, the VCI has no power. Once all that has been verified, you should be able to make a solid connection from the "VCI Managment" page. If not, then I'm out of suggestions. You may have to return a defective unit back to Amazon for either a refund or exchange.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having. Unfortunately I am not a company tech support person for XTOOL. You would be much better off contacting them for a solution. Or, simply return the product for either a replacement scan tool, or a refund. It sounds like you received a defective scan tool..... which CAN happen. It would probably be easiest to just request a replacement and then send the old one back. Thanks for the comment.

They are genuinely trying to make high quality automotive diagnostic equipment. Some might say a WiFi VCI is overkill, or that a Bluetooth connection is "good enough".... but in my mind, if something better already exists, (like WiFi technology) then why not use it? Obviously nobody is going to be working on a car 100+ feet away from their scanner but a range test is a great way to show just how good the connection is between the WiFi VCI and the scan tool. My guess is.... the industry and as a whole was content with Bluetooth.... why spend the money to develop new hardware when existing hardware is good enough, even if just barely good enough. I suspect now that XTOOL took that step forward, all the others will have no choice but to follow. Thanks for the comment!

@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 7 месяцев назад
@@erikholmes8069 Bluetooth sucks. It's slow as balls. Along with MUCH lower bandwidth, it's wireless range is also much smaller (shorter) than compared to WiFi. Here's an example.... I have brand new Samsung S23 Ultra and when paired with the entertainment system in my brand new car, there is an audio delay when watching youtube videos on my phone, but playing the audio through the car speakers. It's ridiculous. There is no reason to have an audio delay with all modern equipment.... especially with audio only. Could you imagine the delay if we tried to send 4K video over bluetooth? lolol. No Thanks! None of this would not happen with a WiFi connection. Thanks for the comment. 🙂
