First shots: New FG-42 1st Model from SMG

PLEASE NOTE: German paratroops originally dropped with only light weapons, and their rifles and machine guns were dropped separately in parachute containers. This was a terrible idea, as it led to the guns being lost, and left paratroops fighting with little more than pistols. The FG-42's purpose was to serve as a rifle and light machine gun that could be carrier directly by the jumping paratrooper instead of using arms containers.

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Many years ago, SMG Guns introduced a reproduction FG-42 rifle, a semiauto version of the 2nd model as made by Germany during World War Two. After several more years of development, they have now shipped the first of their 1st model FG0-42 semi autos. There are several significant differences between the two - the 1st model was a milled receiver rifle with a stamped sheet metal stock, a very distinctively steep pistol grip, and a bipod mounted on the gas block. The 2nd model used a stamped receiver, wooden stock, bipod on the front sight block, and a few other differences.
Today I am trying out the new 1st model rifle. It is chambered for 8mm Mauser, and uses ZB-26 20-round magazines. I have been waiting a very long time for this rifle, and I'm very excited to finally have my hands on it!

TILLER BEEZ Had presumptively assumed the blowing on cartridge case was to clear any possible sand, grit, or shit from the feed lips before inserting and fucking mechanism with debris. Seemed a reasonable precaution, shooting that is, prone, no mat, in loose gravel and sand.

ryo leo on civilian’s parachutes and drop altitude I would said it’s possible, but on military ones it is not, because on the static line drop you don’t have any control of the chute, the time falling is to short and the impact on the ground requires a good landing for you to don’t break anything, contrary to the civilian’s one where you can pretty much land walking

Former 82nd Airborne guy here, 1. ALL combat static-line (where your parachute deploys by the simple action of you exiting the aircraft) jumps tend to be from a low altitude to reduce the amount of time you're in the air. If memory serves correctly, the most recent U.S. combat jumps (Grenada, Panama, northern Iraq) were conducted at something like 500' AGL. It's such a low altitude that even though everybody is jumping a reserve parachute, if you have a problem with your main, your reserve 'chute won't have enough time to fully deploy and save you. 2. Even though U.S. parachutes have two points of attachment to the harness, sometimes if you have a bad exit, your "risers" as they're called and parachute lines will get twisted up. It can be easily fixed by moving your feet and legs as though you were riding a bicycle, which causes you to spin. Another problem that's also a pain in the butt, is "oscillating" where you just swing back and forth underneath your parachute. I've experienced both of these problems with U.S. T-10D parachutes.

Actually the reason is rather stupid, as it is hilarious and somewhat obscure. Hitler, in his INFINITE stupidity, insisted that WWI weaponry was all the frontline infantry man needed in combat. It was good enough for him, so its good enough for them. So, to prevent him from just hating the weapon when he inevitably tested it for approval, they made it have a grip like the KAR-98. This is the same reason that it took till 1943-44 to get the STG44 into mainline manufacturing and eventually semi-standard issue.... hitler's complete arrogance and stupidity. Which, additional fun fact, made him insist that he knew tactics better than his generals... which is why he executed 84 out of the 126 german generals and field marshals that died during the war.... including Irwin Rommel who took a cyanide pill rather than have his family suffer.

I saw that too...Its hard to spot the bullet splashes exactly, but I was thinking that maybe he was hitting the body and just the inertia of the hit was swinging the reset plate back some. I mean, he regularly uses this target for 9mm carbines, a 198grain 7.92 at like 2500fps hits much, much harder, ya know?
@Hansengineering
@Hansengineering 3 года назад
@@rickb1973 he shoots the 9mm from much closer, AND always seems to require multiple hits to reset there, too. Something's fucky with that particular target. @@rickb1973 Yes I'm thinking the same thing. It's gotta be hits to the body that still knocks the plate a little bit backwards. If an 8mm mauser can't consistently reset it, then there's definitely something wrong :)

German parachute troop doctrine was to jump without weapons, except for pistols for those who were issued one (officers, non-comms, certain other designated personnel). The other weapons were all packed into cylindrical crates that were dropped separately. One of the problems in Crete was that the initial landings were sans long-arms, no rifles, no SMGs nothing other than some pistols. For all the lore about the FG weapons, the vast majority of the use was sen when the Fallschrinjager fought as regular infantry on the Eastern Front. There are pictures of Fallschrimjagers equipped with FG 42s and STGs mixed in while being around German armored vehicles.

@SlavicCelery

Perhaps they thought it less snaggy than a straight grip initially.
@vicvector7878
@vicvector7878 3 года назад
The real reason for the pistol grip on the original version was because they initially expected it to be replacing use of the mg34 among the squads that were to be deployed with it, filling the mg as well as the assault rifle role. The grip is specific to it's stable and effective use in prone firing positions. However the luftwaffe favored retaining use of the mg34 so they mainly refocused it as primarily an assault rifle.
