Nice brother! She's a runner. Great to see hear Josh. He's a delight to have on your adventures. It's going to be an awsome first car for he hehe... he doesn't sound too pumped for that.. great to see ya as always today.
@@5150mxVW Let Josh watch this vid from REVan Evan of someone leaving a cars and coffee meet up wrecking a cherry ford pickup. He'll be able to laugh at that some day.
Great vid! My girlfriend bought her dream car, 1969 beetle 2 days ago. Sat since 1982. Gonna try and get her fired today! I’m 19 years old and I pray and hope to God in the future my son will end up just like your son. Good job for getting him into the car community at a young age! Gotta start em while there young! I’m also very new to beetles.. I have a ‘67 mustang as my car and I’m so used to that but VW is definitely new for me! your channel and how you explain your videos helped me a ton
These old VWs are becoming scarce. The restorable survivors should be put back on the road. Not only the Beetles, but the buses and the Karman Ghias. I rarely see one of these anymore, but when I do, it always lifts my spirit.
Jason, that was sweet.... the little solex that could. Soon Josh will be on pac customs, samba & j bugs catalog site. Baja's totally rock and gotta love a 1600 DP and link pin front end. Perfect platform for a build. Looking fwd too what you snagging this weekend.
"It's a runner!" .... [ may not be on all cylinder's yet, but one thing at a time, okay? ] Good to hear Josh's enthusiasm for the work ahead. A project like this will teach him that, as you say, doing it right the first time is well worth the effort.
I really love to see a dad and his boy working on stuff together! You are teaching him to one day be a man and bonding with him at the same time. Keep it up and please keep up the great video content - later!
Josh’s comment was priceless! Good job getting it going, knew you could do it. The untrasonic cleaner is the ticket with old carbs, can’t be without one!
Always remember to unhook power to the coil any length of time you're working on other things, and not trying to start it, or it's running, as if they sit and cook without, it can burst them. Can just turn off the jumper pack to do it as well, but it's a good habit to get into..as yes, we've all 'popped' a coil, even Mustie has in a video ;) But that motor is actually in pretty good shape, and should be a good one for whatever it's used for.
G'day! Right-on! That was quite Impressive! I too, enjoyed seeing father son... working together!! Plus! You can't beat a great sense of humor!! That really crack me up! "I think, Mustie needs to do some work on it first" Lol! 🤣 Cheers! 🛠✌🏼❤️
@@5150mxVW Your welcome! Thank you, too! Amen to that, you have a wonderful son! By the way... When a son said, that his ambition was to drive an army tank, his father said 'I won't stand in your way. Lol! 🤣✌🏼❤️
Pretty cool old baja bug. Can't wait to see what you end up doing with this engine before putting it in the single cab as far as mechanical work, aesthetics, etc. Also can't wait to see what you're picking up. I was going to say this weekend but it's late Sunday now so it's already happened. lol. I'm a little late to the party on this video. Was at a Cub Scout camp all weekend with my girlfriend and her boys.
Fall has fell in your area of CT. Josh is certainly following in your footsteps Jason. Classic air cooled VW's live on because of the special interest you have in so many aspects of them. A runner they will be as you methodically bring them back to life ...
Dear 5150mxVW Hmm... I could write respectively comment a lot (like always). :-) ;-) But the quintessential thing in this video is the great bond between you and that fantastic and cute little son of yours once again. Congrats to you both! Honestly: I wish I would've had a father like you and I wish that I have had a son like Josh! Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to you, your family and Mustie1! Postscriptum: LOL I simply couldn't resist to mention him ;-) :-) 2) When do we see your new oldest bus? Can hardly wait...
Josh doesnt get enough credit for his input on his opinions. he needs a compensation plan. maybe a straight trade. he gives his input, and you compensate with Legos. If Josh needs representation on this matter. Give him my number. My legal department is at his disposal. I take pmt. in Legos. lol
Hello my good for info I use a translation program. I am pleasantly surprised at the way you got the old motor running again. You are one of the few who really approach it with expertise. Your video made me very happy. I would say keep it up. A little tip on the side, if you have the spark plugs out and then turn the engine through, you can connect a compression device straight away, then you are on the safe side that the compression is still present Greetings from Germany Chrissi.
Crazy, my first car a 74 super beetle duned out like this one was given to me when I was 6 in 88 same color and I'm getting a new one next week a 58😃 brought back memories when I saw this vid, happy tears 😊
hey here is a small trick i’ve been using for years Walmart sells older style oil cans with a 5 or 6 inch nozzle on them and a trigger pump it’s excellent for squirting Marvel Mystery into a spark plug hole or any other crevice on a motor ! plus it’s handy to have around for lubricating whatever they are some brass looking metal and i’ve kept one in the bilge of my boat for over 15 years that sits in salt water enviorments the thing for a cheap tool has held up fine all those years ? it’s way easier than your funnel system i’m not sure what you paid for the old Baja but it’s cool that it runs with not much effort i’ve had some really good memories in air cooled VWs in my 55 years i bought a 72 really rusty and crusty one from a old co worker for a couple of hundred bucks and some used car tires i pulled off a used car as the guy i bought it from used it to get thru college and we all didn’t even think it would survive or make the 4 hour drive to or from his school i was shocked to see him 4 years later driving the car he knew i liked Bugs and asked if i knew anyone that wanted his when i picked it up my best freind drove it home on dead tags while i followed him and the car with a tow rope he backed it into the driveway so we had a little light from the garage to look into the engine bay the two of us laughed our asses off when we saw 2 spark plugs on their wires dangling out of the holes but the motor was still running and drove the car home from our buddies 4 hour drive from college ! when i asked the guy about the car he said i’m not sure why but it’s running slower than it used to i think the next day i went to look at the bug in the daylight and realized both those plugs were stripped so i went to a local VW repair shop and asked those guys if there was a solution to this when they asked me what Volkswagen i had they laughed because they knew that Bug before the guy went to college and couldn’t believe it was still going ! those guys sold me a heliopolis kit and told me how to use it i really had my doughts but went home and did what they told me and it worked ! it seemed to run better on 4 cylinders a few days later my Dad asked me if i knew of any decent used cars for sale around town for my younger sister to drive back and forth to community college which i did not yet i mentioned to him i had just bought the old Beetle and what i discovered so we ordered a Brazilian rebuild kit from our parts store for $110 dollars with all the gaskets new pistons and rings etc everyone told us that it was junk and we should only use German parts but we pulled the motor nothing more than a drill hone to smooth out the pistons and we put it all together with the parts in the kit and found the old girl running okay i wound up giving my sister the car and told her i’m not sure how long it will run but she used it for 4 years and still talks about her first car with love she did actually give it back to me 4 years later and i drove it to my friends house where we pulled the motor and over 35 years later that same motor is still running in another Beetle with all those Brazilian parts everyone said will never last ? my Old Man was a VW guy as he had purchased a 58 and a 63 brand new and drove them all over the place my Mom still remembers the 63 had a payment of fifty something dollars a month that they paid religiously no matter what and with 2 babies my Dad was a expert on tying things to the outside of that 63 like carriages ,play pens ,and whatever else she needed to travel around with us they lived in New York city and used to drive 100 miles to my grandparents home in the Catskills Mountains upstate New York she remembers my Dad putting two dollars into the gas tank and saying he thinks that’s enough to get them there she didn’t know how much was in the tank but it got them there she also said she used to get tired watching my father shifting to get up and down the hills ! and complaining about the defroster in the winter time as he fidgeted with the controls between the seats while driving i was born in 64 and i still remember riding in that car as a matter of fact we went to a drive in movie to see Herbie the Love Bug and i remember my Dad laughing hysterically at the movie
Craig , thank you so much for sharing the best story ever in my comments history . That is just an amazing story to read ! I have been on the look out for a classic / vintage oil can just like you mentioned . Thank you for tip and incredible story Craig👍
Nice job getting the engine started. I don't have much luck trying to do that. Sounds like you will be adding to the fleet. Could you mention where you get some of your parts? I've gotten parts from CIP1, Midamerica Motorworks, and Wolfsburgwest.
Thank you 65 , keep at it , you'll get it , spark , fuel and timing👍. I have been using Cip1 lately , hard to beat free shipping AND the 30% off sales .
Nice systematic approach without all the clutter we find in so many "first start" videos out there. You obviously have some VW experience so got right to the heart of the issues, although I'm amazed you didn't bother with a compression test while the plugs were out. I thought you mentioned a valve adjustment somewhere, which is an often neglected task on these things. Overall, great video!
Thank you very much , I wanted to hear it run ....I can check it's health later , plus my comp tester was at the other garage . I appreciate the kind words 53'
For carbs that bad, I’ll usually use my baking soda blaster before the ultrasonic cleaner. They normally come out looking like new. And I just use plain water with some Simple Green HD mixed in. Doesn’t discolor aluminum carb bodies and a jug of it lasts for a very long time. Don’t use regular Simple Green. It can discolor some carb bodies.
Jason, I got my cheap handheld blaster from Horror Fright. And you can get a big bag of Arm & Hammer at Sam’s Club. It also works great for cleaning spark plugs. I blast them and toss them in the cleaner. The best part is that any leftover baking soda simply dissolves in the water.
On items like carbs I find that inverting them works best. Allows the debris to fall away from the jets/passages, etc. On really bad items I end up rotating it until every side faces the piezo drivers at the bottom of the tank.
Hey Jason.....I new it was going to start...Even Josh new Josh said it would start...Josh is going to know about VW by the time he is 16 yrs old....good vidio Jason will be interesting to see the next vidio.... Have a safe wk end my friend!!!
We had about 5 inches of snow a day or so ago. The 67, 007 is in the garage for the winter. I am thinking about putting it up on jack stands put the cover on it and hunker down until spring!
5150mxVW Yes, But the snow is gone for now. But it is in the high 20s low 30s almost every night so it could snow at any time. Don’t drive it in the rain either. It’s ready to pull out of the garage and drive. If I know it is going to be nice outside I will take it out. It’s completely rust free and want to keep it that way.
haha, yup , it just keeps me motivated to get better every day .....thank you , we routinely get destroyed but we have a young team vs 9-10 year olds ....big difference . Josh is 7 and holding his own , plays catcher too👍
In 1988, New York had "Liberty" plates. Those plates on that car were decommissioned in 1983 or 84. That car may not have been driven and on the road from before 3 or 84. Just saying because you suggested it was since 1988. Those plates were on cars when I was a baby in the early 1970's. Since it's New York, look for a reg or inspection sticker with the last year on the road. those stickers would be on the windshield lower drivers side.
Hi David , during winter , I have a lot of cleaning up / storage / etc before the snow comes

Nice, bajas are always cool. The kids got great taste!!! Those old yellow plates bring back a lot of memories, where in N.Y. are you? I'm way up north and the rust is insane, even when I lived on L.I. it was bad. Best wishes!
Enjoyed the video - love seeing old engines brought back to life. Just out of curiosity, why did you start/run it in gear? (or was the wheel spinning for some other reason?)
