First Step of Dog Training: Building Engagement

Here Katrina works with new immersion dog Ranger, a 7 month old Boxer who is just a high energy, fun loving guy. Engagement with a dog is the key to successful training both in the beginning and long term so this is our primary focus on week 1 of all of our training programs, along with forming foundation behaviors through luring and free shaping. We also will add in fluid lead communication to our immersion dogs this week, and on lesson 2 with our one on one training.

How do you deal with a puppy preferring to okay with other dogs? I think I will have to keep them separate but feel bad doing that

Hello I am curious if you have something else someone can do besides walking backwards? I use a cane and physically can't walk backwards. I think walking sideways also doesn't work for me. Any suggestions?

Why do you back up and say his name when he looks at you?

DONT quote me but I’m pretty sure that saying the name of the dog when rewarding, it teaches them that their name should be an indicator for the dog to start paying attention to the trainer, if that makes sense.

As stated above. Also besides strengthening the engagement, at some point in the future, you will backchain to this training when you are beginning to work on recall. The backing up and calling the dog into you, can create a solid foundation for a recall later on.

Way too many treats. Didn't give him a chance to do it on his own.

When the dog is barely starting training you kinda want to give a lot of treats. Over time of course you reduce and eventually nearly eliminate the need to reward treats for hem doing a command.
