Many behavioral issues in dogs are directly related to how much mental and physical exercise they are getting on a daily basis. Dogs who aren’t given proper outlets for their energy will often find their own, less than ideal, outlets. Similarly, dogs who do not get proper amounts of physical activity incorporated in their daily lives can often become overweight and are more prone to health issues. While treadmills are not meant to be the sole source of your dogs physical activity, they are an excellent option to burn some of that excess energy and help manage your dogs weight. This video shows how to properly introduce your dog to a treadmill and some of the details to pay attention to when incorporating a treadmill into your dogs fitness routine.

So happy to see "shields"/ panels on the sides. We hav two different brands ( Mera dog + ? do not know+ but both has rails /walls. makes it a lot more safe and i see our dogs love it. We have always put treats and toys around in our training room - also ON the mill -so they have to go on to it in a proper way because of the panels/ This makes the dogs a lot more confident when it comes to trying out the mill. :) Great way to train the dogs.. But i see they have to be long enough for the dog to avoid the leg getting caught under.. a gate at the back is super dangerous.. so if anyone is making a human treadmill to fit a dog they must be careful .

I personally like no side panels and not hooking the dog up to the treatmill. If done properly with food, he will walk up the back of the treatmill, run as long as he wants and isn't being held there therefore he can leave when he wants to. If you do this clearly enough, he'll never want to get off anyways.

I find it a lot safer with the panels. We have a quick release hook for the line but there is also a smart system at the top where you can slip the line into and regulate with your hand ( hard to explain with my bad english. sorry ) I never let them run without the line - i have seen accidents happen because of that - so i always have the line for control. We also have more than one dog in the room ( they are inside our training arena) while training and i find the panels/rails a lot safer and espec. when the GSDs and WSS's are trotting at full pace we need to have full control - if they decide to get of the mill in that speed they can get badly injured..We can change the height quite a lot on the largest one and make it a very steep upwards run. If the jumped of that it could be extremely dangerous. Even if i train the dogs to stay there - and i know they enjoy it - i never gamble on it. also it makes them a lot more focused on what they do - and not so "attractive" to run up to an join when they are shielded from others :) But we all have different experiences and ways to do things - so the most important thing is to give our dogs the best life they can have - and i know they are lucky to have us... Treats, walks, treadmills, games and love :-)

Thanks for the informative video. I recently adopted a greyhound up here in Canada. I've been working with him at the shelter for a while and I know he hates the cold as well as having any jacket put over him. Hopefully I can get him used to the treadmill to burn off some of his excess energy during the cold parts of the year.

As a trainer we always introduce the dog to the treadmill getting on and getting off several times first before ever turning it on.

Is there a certain age you recommend to start with? I'm trying to work with my Malamute pup(about 4 months) since we are quarantined for the Coronavirus and so exercising is scary since I dont want an infected person to touch him, thus spreading it to others that touch that same spot. Thank you

With puppies, rhythmic movements, like running on a treadmill, is not advised due to the possibility of damaging their developing joints. Depending on the breed, a good guide to go by is at least 12 months old.

Hii! Love your vids and have a question.. A lot of people that run their dogs on mills claim that a slatmill is much safer and better then a treadmill... Personally I would only prefer to use it for a light jog 20-30 min a day for my 7.5 year old Pit. Most if not all Pit owners say that a slatmill is the only way to go, but I just dont think its true as on the slatmill he will have to motivate himself to jog, ofcourse first I will use food then maybe a toy, but im not planning to stand and cheer him for the full workout every time... A slatmill also costs a couple of thousand, but even if money is not the issue in this case, what would you recommend?

Should I be working my Belgian Malinois on a treadmill or carpet mill? Carpet mills are for muscle building and easier to keep in a home or garage.

Good Question! We would suggest waiting until about 18 months before doing this sort of repetitive exercise (long hikes, jogging, treadmill etc.) with your dog because their growth plates have not yet fully closed. Prolonged exercise with young puppies will greatly increase the chance of injury.

Okay, good advice. I'll stick to simple socialization on the treadmill for now. I think I got about 10 yards walking from my 12 week old pup the other day and we'll not push beyond that. Thanks!

Try to put the dogs toys and some treats on it .. ( without using it) Building positive experiences on the mill. makes the dog very confident when they day comes that you are going to use it :)

Beware the DOGPACER Treadmill. If you do your reseach, you will find that the company knowingly produces a sub par product and refuses to make it right with their clients. The folding unit has a seam that allows folding for storage. On some of the units, when the dog is running, it causes the belt to rub on the seam, producing an ear piercing shriek with each step. There are many reviews on the internet (check amazon) from people just like me who have made the company aware of the issue, and were left out to dry. Dog pacer refuses to make it right. Further, their customer service is atrocious. In fact, a trip to the dentist would be preferable to having to speak with them on the phone. Think twice before spending your money on a headache.

I do have a question. My boy was comfortable walking on the mill. I bumped his speed up and he wouldn't switch from a pace to a jog. He spooked himself because he couldn't pace fast enough. Tips?

I spent 2 days standing my dog on and off the treadmill putting treats and his feed on it I sat him beside the the tread mill he watched me walking on it to accustom him to the noise it makes I got him to stand on it after 2 days then set it to 1mph he absolutely shit himself now won't go anywhere near it I don't force him near it just try encourage him again I think that's the end of that plan

these machines are good especially if you oive in a particularly cold environment!! where i live during the winter, we will reach -40 no problem; a little to cold for dogs

I walk our dogs every day, but when it is a snowstorm or the rain is pouring down they actually prefer to get on the mill after a play session :) And as Ryan says - it i just a supplement.. I also use it to get a super nice trot on my dogs in a good environment and on a level ground so i can detect any problems. It is quite hard to see that if you run or bicycle beside them. Also for injured dogs that needs to be monitored closely.. SO many great reasons for using it - but as a supplement - NEVER as a substitute :)

Currently I can’t walk... I’m disabled and on crutches so my dog misses out entirely until my hubby comes home or I can get a friend to walk him. Very narrow minded of you. There are many reasons the treadmill is great for dogs. Also helps alleviate anxiety in anxious dogs.
