You know it’s a good shave when soap is in your hair. You are doing well starting out.

The lather looked good on my tiny phone screen. For a first time. You did pretty good. I understand the first time nerves. My grandfather was a pro and he said respect it, but don’t be afraid of it. You will have good shaves and some not so good. Just baby steps, pay attention, slow and steady and pretty soon it becomes a normal routine. Congratulations!

Watching this video has brought back memories of my straight razor journey. Stretching the skin is crucial. That was a good start. You hit on something important, calm patience. Even now, I only straight shave when I'm in the right zen mood. You having a goatee is a plus. The chin and upper lip are the most challenging.
@nthdegree1269

That's what I have heard, that the chin area is very difficult and challenging for some people.

Man, you had me on edge the whole time. I was sweating lol. You did great. You didn't push it and you kept your pressure light. It is tricky getting used to the hand and razor coordination and spacial awareness; that comes with practice. Knowing where the toe and heal is in relation to your face is all part of the learning, some times the hard way, like with your ear. But if you move gently, like you did, you can avoid serous injuries. BarberDave's shaves and Such, has a great series of sr tutorials that go over it all. I would highly recommend watching/fallowing them. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more sr shaves. Cheers!

Great start Brother! The soap looks good and it takes a while to get used to stretching the skin and holding the razor. It has kind of an unnatural feel and it's hard to see what you're doing. I would suggest watching Matti Lindholm and he also has some great honing videos. Straights are a little more forgiving, but when you get comfortable I'll set up a Weck Kamisori for you and you can get your ninja on! It has zero forgiveness-haha! It's like a razor blade on a stick! Straight shaving can be like meditation and you get into a zone and everything outside of what you're doing falls away. It takes dedication to get proficient and you can build up by starting with partials like you did here. You also won't think about the technique that I mentioned after a while and it will become one fluid motion. Once you're at the skin level you don't have to follow it, but when there's big transitions it helps to not get a touch cut. You're on your way! Have a great week!

Man, those Spider-Man posters are just doing it for me, sorry. "BONESAW IS READDDYYYYYY!!!!" Why am I such a film nerd?!!!! Anyways, excellent shave, man. Always like seeing folks do a traditional cutthroat shave. Funny how I've only been into this hobby for two years and it feels like I've been in here for almost 5-10 with so much product knowledge and research. Always glad to meet great shaving friends like you to discuss all types of things! 😊😊😊

Excellent razor, I started with the 5/8 Ralf Aust. I recently started using 100% virgin coconut oil as a pre-shave oil, works well, even better with coconut or rum scented soaps. Enjoy the shaves sir.

Glenn and I both used barber Dave’s straight razor series. Search for SRS 101. Looks good for first time. I am not a fan of touching down with razor flat then lifting. It leads to cutting if you hesitate. Looks like the razor is nice and prepared well. Be careful when you rinse the blade. It sounded like water went everywhere. Try to limit to just the blade. I’m happy to help you

Great to try it out. It doesn’t take long to find your right stretch, angle, and grip. I’m 99% DE - I don’t notice any meaningful difference in performance for the maintenance effort - but I’ll sometimes bring out my straight razor if my whiskers have grown too long for the DE. Or little touch up under the nose and sideburns. But there is an aesthetic to it, so it’s understandable why some people prefer it

Hi from Australia. Thanks for the video Tobin - I enjoy all of your content. This video perfectly sums up why I will never get into shaving with a straight razor. It's just too hard and too much stuffing around when it comes to technique, honing and all that. IMO the juice just aint worth the squeeze. I respect those who are into it but I guess I'm a DE and SE guy and always will be.

I give you a ton of credit for your first try on camera. It does take a while to get the ergonomics down, the touch will come, just stay light. There is no shame in finishing the neck and lining out goatee with DE. All that will come with time. Be patient, the technique will come over rhe next 20-30 shaves. The reward is worth the process. Great job!

I was a wee poor young lad when i started shaving with a straight razor. The reason why i started with a Straight was, i was poor and didn't wanna spend money on blades. So, i bought a 5/8 and a Leather strop, after a few years i switched up to a 6/8. That was decades ago, and now that i'm no longer poor, and gotten tired of always stropping the razor before every shave, i have switched to DE shaving. But i still remember how nervous a was the 1st few times i tried the Cutthroat Razor. And i'm sure, if you keep practicing, you'll get the hang of it.

@@Tobins_throwbacks I wouldn't know, I never Honed my Razors myself. I've only ever had Dovo Straight Razors, and you can send in your Razor to Dovo 1 year after purchase for its 1st hone, and they'll hone it for free and send it back. Subsequent hones cost a bit, but not a lot. If you take good care of your Straight, it will rarely need honing, maybe once a year. A good leather strop will get you a long way.

Wow, Tobin. Only 2 little nicks, WTG! It looks much more complicated than using a DE razor. More power to you. I would not be able to do all the maneuvering required... limitations in my arm movements from former injuries. I also don't have the cajones to try. 😁 Keep up the practice, and I'm sure you will get much more confident and better at it.

Respect! I’ve tried a straight razor I had honed. A few DE/SE shavettes, a weck. I recently got a feather SS kamisori that used artist club blades & I like that the best so far. I find it the smoothest so far. U had me laughing because you truly captured what it’s like to use a straight. We can be a DE or SE pro but WOW does learning to straight humble you! Every hold feels weird & wrong 😂😂. I usually do my checks only. I’ve ventured to my neck a few times and it irritated me but that’s was different blades then I have now so I’ll keep working on it.

Fabulous first straight shave Tobin. ‘Barber Dave” is the guy who has the instructional You Tube videos. You will find your own technique as you continue with it. Funny, but you can watch 10 different guys do a straight razor shave, and you will see 10 different techniques. You need to coat your blade with oil before you put it away to prevent it from developing any rust. I use Ballistol. Keep water away from the pivot screws. Now that you have me motivated again, I’ll do a straight razor shave tomorrow! Not on RU-vid though, struggling with getting over COVID. See you soon! Best regards, Glenn
