On an episode of VH1's Storytellers, Adam explained: "It's really a song about my friend Marty and I. We went out one night to watch his dad play, his dad was a Flamenco guitar player who lived in Spain (David Serva), and he was in San Francisco in the mission playing with his old Flamenco troupe.

Brad did a great interpretation of the song this time. Maybe because it is about a shared experience that duds all have? About Picasso, my take follows closely Brads idea about guys bragging with "fairy tales" to each others. To understand it, one must go back to the whole verse. "... Well, I'm gon' paint my picture". Posing and bragging. Creating another "fairy tale" for others and for oneself. "... Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray". The fairy tale of the star/artist (leadsinger in the Counting Crows band in his case), but he is painting himself. So in the end he is being narcissistic. He begins with vibrant colours, then goes to black and end in gray. Like if he looking at a mirror and changing his mood. "... All of the beautiful colors are very, very meaningful". Being derogatory about the artificially created meaning of colors that he just created in his mind. "... Yeah, well, you know gray is my favorite color". Yeah. Addressing the people that are hearing him. He is showing you that he is not in a good spot. To note that in this line he may be comparing the listeners of the song with Mr Jones. So Mr Jones are all of us. Now we transition to the Picasso part. "... I felt so symbolic yesterday". Self critic. "... If I knew Picasso". If he knew one of those "stars" and was by association looked by everyone. "... I would buy myself a gray guitar and play".That is exactly what he is doing as a known artist/star. A gray guitar doesn't play happy songs.

"that was a beautiful piece of music... it was simple and complex" - Lex She pretty much summed up my thoughts of the Counting Crows in one sentence. They are easily in my Top 5 all time. @@iamtheking9418 Counting Crows are notorious for being either hot or cold on stage. Some nights the show is amazing, some nights it's bad. If you like the first album, and want a good live album, then I suggest the double album "Across a Wire". One disc is an live unplugged set, and the other is a live electric set... both on good nights. But pretty much every studio album is good. Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is one of my favorite albums.

Yeah, one of Picasso’s best-known works - in his early, less impressionistic phase - was “The Old Guitarist”. And you see musical elements throughout his art… even women drawn is guitar shapes, etc… Counting Crows were this super -popular 90’s band that were so heavily melancholy that people got burned out on them, and the band broke up. But they had 2 tremendous albums - August & Everything After & Recovering the Satellites. Very worthwhile.

Sometimes it comes off a little cold and uninterested, and I feel bad even saying that. But this reaction was great--from you. I could see your thoughts turning while you were hyper-analyzing, but watching the smiles crack through, Lex's emotional energy seems to have rubbed off on you. @BestofItMoviedoc 2 года назад
@@alltogetherfitandproper4252 I believe your correct, Dylan inspired parts of the song. I just know his friend Jones created the base and the hook. This from a 2013 Rolling Stones interview: The inspiration for the song came as Duritz and Jones were drunk at a bar after watching Jones' father perform, when they saw Kenney Dale Johnson, longtime drummer for the musician Chris Isaak, sitting with three women. "It just seemed like, you know, we couldn't even manage to talk to girls, ... we were just thinking if we were rock stars, it'd be easier. I went home and wrote the song," Jones’ dad is a Flamenco guitar player and his dad’s band had played at a bar called the New Amsterdam in San Francisco on Columbus

"Stumble out the front door, like a ghost into the fog where no one notices the contrast of white on white. And in between the moon & you, angels get a better view of the crumbling indifference between wrong & right." (Opening lines from Round Here) The Picasso reference is to Picasso's "Blue" period. He painted a work of art of a man w/ a grey guitar.

People say your nostalgia for old music you loved is more about missing the era and life. But the mid 90s were absolutely shit in my life, like nothing good, abuse alcoholics, loneliness, depression, death, etc. but damn I loved the music. I still get a comfort and pleasure from 90s music. It was a vibe as they say. Not the only music I like. It just seems disproportionate mid 90s. Like 93-98. Something you gotta know about Adam Duritz's lyrics. Some of them are literal and others are just feeling. After 26 years I am still finding new ways to interpret the lyrics. Truly gifted singer and lyricist.

Hi loved ur reaction, love this song. Yes .. Picasso has a famous painting called 'THE OLD Guitarist' the guitarist is painted all in blue & black & grey but the guitar is in a bright brown color( so it stands out in the painting & becomes the focal point) So Adam Duritz (the singer) wants to paint himself in those dark (depressing)colors but he wants his guitar to be grey (his favorite color) plus very symbolic of Picasso who had what was called 'The Blue Period' when he was sad & lonely & painted using blue & black & grey with occasional red & brown. Don't want to ramble but it's always good to know stuff & apparently that's what Adam was referring to.✌

I have always enjoyed this song, and I love hearing it through your ears. As others have said this is an autobiographical sketch of a time when the singer was in a garage band and he and a friend were dreaming of what life would be like when they were big stars. As Brad says, there's a lot of emotion in the delivery of these lyrics, and it paints the picture of someone who can find himself "lonely in a crowd" if you will. There's both a hopefulness and a sadness to this song, and it's mixed with a tune that just makes me smile whenever I hear it.

I forgot how little space dude leaves in his vocals. Other than the middle-8, it's like one long rambling monologue lol. I still like these guys though, even though they fell out of fashion pretty quickly. Picasso had a famous "blue phase". Everything he painted was basically some shade of blue. The singer is playing on that in the lyrics about buying a gray guitar. Which says something. Not something happy, but it says something.

The song is him singing about how his life would be so much better if he became famous. Ironically when he became famous (largely due to this song), he grew to despise fame, and in turn this song.

Love this song. I don't know how many times I sat in a bar and thought of that line: "We tell each other fairy tales and we stare at the beautiful women. She's looking at you. Ah, no, no, she's looking at me". Sadly, she's probably not looking at either of you.

That part always reminds me of a dude i worked with at a fbo at the airport, that's where the private planes parked. Used to see so many beautiful women getting of the jets and this dude would always say " did you see her looking at me " wow it would crack me up. I'd always have to tell him " dude you're standing right in front of her panting with your tongue hanging out " of course she's going to look at you thinking wtf

The Song is really Simple. The song is basically about him and his friend Mary Jones dreaming about being big stars someday when they were first starting out. Not really in a bad spot, moreso that he hasn't made it yet but both have big dreams. That's what makes the song so great, the perspective of someone just starting out, and the simplistic honesty of it

Gosh, I remember being 15 years old and this song blowing up the alternative charts. One night me and my friend (who was in love with this track too) called the nearest radio station and begged them to play "Mr Jones". We waited up like three hours for them to play it and when they did we danced and acted like fools. I'm not sure "Mr Jones" will ever crossover to be a timeless classic like some music does but it really ought to. The 90s or even the early 90s wasn't just grunge..the alternative rock was amazing in that era too

First of all, one of the greatest songs of the 90s. I could listen to it everyday and never get tired of it. This album is amazing in general. And about the Picasso line, from Genius: A reference to Picasso’s “The Old Guitarist.” The painting is famously monochrome (shades of grey) except for the sole focus of the guitar which symbolises the life and vibrancy of the music compared with the dark and lonely existence of an artist. Conversely, here the man already feels so bright, so he feels his painting would be drawn with him in the vibrant colours and the guitar would be grey in contrast.

I'm sure someone already said about the Picasso reference...he went through a period where he mostly blue and gray in his paintings...one of his masterpieces is "The Old Guitarist." It's a painting of an elderly man near death who is struggling to play his guitar.

We all love to be loved. I remember as a singer in my band, I would look out at the girls looking up at me from below the stage. It was a fantastic feeling but you always wanted more. We would argue, "she was looking at you, now she was looking at me." Spot on. It's something you can never forget, but what does it mean?

Quick thoughts: 1. With how much emphasis Brad puts into feeling out the lyrics, he will definitely appreciate this band. Adam Duritz is a really good songwriter. 2. Like most people are saying, this entire album is great from start to finish. 3. I recommend fast tracking any reactions you do for this band, then watch as much of their live stuff as possible. Because… 4. Brad immediately latched onto the emotion in the song. He puts all he has into every live performance. One show might not match the next in overall emotion, but you’ll be getting everything he’s got for that night. 5. Part of that is routinely changing up how they play music, and what he sings. Expect lots of lyrical interpolations from other tunes, or even new stuff he’s been riffing on often unique to the tour. 6. There are times when he’ll sing in and out of tune. It’s not on purpose, but he can often get caught up in that emotion, and the result isn’t always “pretty.” But frankly that is part of what makes it so genuine in my opinion. 7. This dude dated a ton of popular women in his day, including Courtney Cox, Jennifer Anniston, and Emmy Rossi. 8. His lyrics can often be brutally honest about him being a real dick to people.

Adam Duritz (the singer) said that he finds it strange that people connect with his lyrics because his lyrics are very specific to him. I just watched an interview with him where he tells the story of this song. There was literally a Mr. Jones and they were at a bar checking women out wanting to be famous. Almost every line in the song literally happened. Then when the song blew up, he got his wish about being famous and everybody knowing his name and it freaked him out and he moved to a different city and bar tended, where nobody knew who he was.
