The 2020 Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the World Championship match that's set to take place in Dubai this December. The 14-round event is being played in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Yekaterinburg, Russia from 17 March to 3 April 2020. The prize fund is €500,000.
The players have 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40. A playoff (beginning with four 25-minute games) is unlikely as head-to-head, no. of wins and Sonneborn-Berger are used first to break a tie for 1st place. Official website: en.candidates-2020.com

@@MrTVx99 Do you know how dedicated you have to be to stretch this "drawn" position for 40 more moves to hope your opponent blunders? Chess is also about mental pressure and Nh1+ Was the ONLY drawing move which kiril missed and blundered, and he did so because of giri pressuring him into blundering. so its giri's dedication which got him the win, stop pretending you know what you're talking about and play a 7 hour game yourself if you want any credibility pertaining to that nonsense you're spewing.
@MrTVx99
@MrTVx99 4 года назад
@@ramking7869 This is the candidates. Best of the best. You have to convert your small advantage if you are a worthy challenger to Magnus. Giri did not, he just kept playing until Kirill made a mistake. Drawing won positions and playing until your opponent makes a mistake are separate ideas.

Let's give credit where it is due, Giri's victory was due to his persistence, helped by Alekseenko's oversight, as getting into a winning position is one thing , one has to still capitalize on it to win, hanging on for 40 moves after getting inkling of a drawn position is what commands admiration. Let's appreciate Giri's fighting spirit, atleast for this game☺...

@@prakashlimaye4559 Of course, it is without a doubt that Giri is an extremely strong player, being 2700+ after all. The above comment was just a joke, not to be taken seriously. I am a personal fan of Giri, not only due to his gameplay but because his father is from my country, Nepal. I saw a couple of guys that dont know why you win or draw 17:29 endgames so i will copypaste here the answer to hopefully help some people First lets see how you win the winning ones (b d e and g) you keep cheking and get your queen close to the pawn, lets use the e pawn as example you will check till the white king is in d8 or f8 and you can check it in d6 or f6 then the king is forced to move to e8 and block his own pawn so you win time to bring your king and you repeat till you win the pawn But with a and h there is no space after you check the king in g8 with your queen in g6 the king goes to h8 and you cant move your king because that would be stalemate, with c and f will use f as example the king will never go to e8 will always go to g8 and once you check in g6 the king goes to h8 you cant capture the pawn because stalemate so is a draw

@DrakePitts
@DrakePitts 4 года назад
It's kind of complicated. Basically if the pawn is one square away from promotion on the a,c,f,h rank, then the attacking side (with the queen) can't force the king away from the pawn because the defending side has stalemate and repetition tricks. If the pawn is on the b,d,e,g rank, then the queen and king can work together to capture the pawn, going on to mate the lone king. ChessNetwork did an excellent video on this topic (search for ChessNetwork Queen vs Pawn Endgame or use video code mEypLNcdjOY).

Important to note is that is was still a drawn endgame until Alekseenko simply got tired after having played for seven hours. Almost everything after the queens were traded was played on increment so they are playing quickly while tired, a mistake was bound to happen. It is one of the few times I really appreciated what Maurice added as a commentator while watching it live as he made sure to talk to the viewers about both the psychology and physicality of playing such a long match. *edit* I mean game, not match. This game also really brings home that quote you have used from time to time about one bad move erasing 40 good ones.

Is there any reason the pawn on e5 isn't hanging at 3:20?

I was watching this game after the position where they trade queens, and I was telling myself that it was impossible to win that game. And somehow Aleeksenko made it possible. Congrats to Giri!

Hey man . Do you think that more games would end up like this if players played on further into games and didn’t settle for draws?

The end game was very similar as Carlson - Anand, which Carlson won.

So for some reason, my notifications of videos are given days after the video is released (even though I've already seen the video?). I frequently check RU-vid and am puzzled why this is happening for all videos for that matter...?

Can someone explain how the pawn on the a, c, f, or h squares is a draw? Is it because you cannot force the king under the pawn?

3:33 An important line to discuss here. Why not Nxe6 ... Rxe6 Rxe6 ... fxe6 Bxg6 ... hxg6 Qf3 This is good for white. The point is after Nxe6, Black has the in-between Bxf7+. After you take it Kxf7, Black takes the Knight fxe6+. After you move the king, say Kg1, Black has Qxg3.
