It was her ex-husband, Bjorn, who wrote this song and had her to sing it after their divorce. During an interview in a scandinavian show in 2014, he was asked was it hard for him and her to do so. He commented that more than hard, it was a cleansing of all the emotions for both. This was Agnetha's favourite ABBA songs I believe, it feel deeply personal.

Believe it or not, ABBA is one of the biggest selling musical acts of ALL time, coming in at #4 behind The Beatles, Elvis and then MJ. Of course, this info comes from years ago and I'm sure the rankings have changed since then ...except for the top two, and The Beatles and Elvis can't be beat.

Absolutely. From 1975 to 1983 they were one of the most successful singing groups in the world, with almost every release a hit song. They sold hundreds of millions of songs during their career, with their best selling single, Fernando, selling over ten million itself. Their songs topped the charts in multiple countries all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica.

I can believe it for sure-here in the UK they were mammoth-we were their biggest buying audience & they were at Beatles & Elvis level of popularity for the best part of a decade. The song was written by the guitar player, Björn, as he and the blond singer, Agnetha, were having their marriage end in divorce. Benny, on the piano, would soon be divorced from the brunette singer, his wife Anifrid. If memory serves, this was the band’s last big hit, and became a colossal break-up / divorce song as Agnetha emotes the feelings perfectly, and as ABBA so often does, they underpin a sad theme with upbeat music that is in contrast to the song’s sadness and leaves you feeling the depth of the emotions sung about while picking you up at the same time. In a brilliant way, this reflects the get on with starting again. ABBA music is timeless because it deals with emotions and experiences that are universal and readily understood while wrapping them up in a package of catchy, rhythmic arrangements and extraordinary vocals and harmonies. You find the same timelessness illustrated in other classics like the greats of Motown such as The Supremes, Temptations, and The Miracles. Times and tastes change, but fabulous songwriting that people can relate to as well as groove to a beat - well, IMO, they will be enjoyed for many generations to come. A very nice reaction, once again! 💪🏻🎸🎤🎶👍🏻

@@donniemaher511 That myth is still not true, despite repeated on every Abba video. Even back when Abba members grew up, Swedes started to learn English (and French, German) pretty early in school. It's true though that Agnetha felt very limited and unsecure speaking English (while being the only one of the four formally trained in music, on an instrument as well as in musical notation). Another true part is that they indeed practiced or trained some words "phonetically", to make the pronunciation fit a particular song's rhythmic or melodic structure better.

ABBA was Agnetha Faltskog (the blonde, pronounced Ahn-yet-a), Bjorn Ulvaeus (the guitarist, pronounced B-yorn), Benny Andersson (the pianist), and Anni-Frida Lyngstad, aka Frida (the redhead). The band name is their initials; they had to make a special agreement with a Swedish fish cannery with the same name in order to use the name. At this point, 1980, Agnetha and Bjorn had been divorced for a year (they married in '71). Benny and Frida had been together since around '71, married in '78, and would divorce a year later in '81. Both men remarried within a year of their divorce. By '82, they all went off to do solo projects and just never came back together to record again. Bjorn and Benny wrote the musicals "Chess" and "Mamma Mia".

It's amazing the guys got the gals to sing this song, and that they wrote. Gals thought they would leave the band to launch solo careers, and only the Brunette was a One-Hit-Wonder on TV with "Something's Going On" but that was it, the guys would go on to write hits for other artists and eventually remarry. But this was basically the breakup album and song for the band. So sad as they had been bigger than the Beatles in sales and hits in the 70s up through 1980, but not all that glitters is gold. I still love ABBA music with so much of it from my childhood, as I was only 12 and just getting into 80s music when they broke up, but this is probably the saddest song of all, but it was a big hit when it was released, played on the radio everywhere. Abba are magic. Stylistically, they stood right at the precipice dividing the Seventies and the Eighties. Disco and cabaret from before, big, slow melody and keyboard accompaniment from later. Sort of the pinnacle of the triumphant disco sound. And they knew how to bring the drama. Beautiful singing. Beautiful music. Engaging lyrics intriguingly warped by the fact the writer had Swedish as a first language, making it sound a little stark and exotic. They are near the top of my list.
