Beethoven's Choral Fantasy for piano, chorus and orchestra. op.80
• Beethoven's Choral Fan...
Alice Sara Ott in concert with the Insula orchestra, Laurence Equilbey conducting.
Oct 15, 2016, Philharmonie de Paris.
Hi Travis and Suzi! I wanted to share an often neglected and underrated work by Beethoven: The Fantasy for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra. In many ways it is the precursor to his famous “Ode to Joy” Ninth Symphony. This performance is fantastic, and I love the beautiful singing tone of that Pleyel piano. I had a little bit of drama around this piece in high school (who doesn’t have drama in high school, right?). I requested to perform this work with our orchestra and chorus, and it was granted. I spent almost four months learning it only to find out that the orchestra conductor never ordered the music, and therefore we wouldn’t be able to do it. Then in college, I won a spot to play a piano concerto with the orchestra, but my request to perform this work was declined on account of it being too difficult to rehearse due to the forces needed to perform it. The good news is that I got to instead play the Schumann piano concerto, which is my favorite piano concerto and easily in the top five greatest piano concerti ever written.

Truly happy to see you listening to classical music. These were the masters.

Fave Beethoven! Thanks! Brilliant contrasts with the piano and orchestra and then adding the choir.

As you may know, Ludwig was a crazy good pianist, famous for his improvisational sessions. Imagine writing all these notes down with a quill pen, careful not to make a mess with the ink.

had the privilege to sing in the choir for a college performance (one of our professors CRUSHED the piano, holy smokes). not a lot to sing, obviously, but to stand there rehearsal after rehearsal leading up to performance time, and just listen to this beautiful, sweeping, almost-playful-at-times composition was just...something else. i love how much y'all loved it. :) your classical music reactions are quickly becoming a favorite. :)

Love that you guys found this great performance and with period instruments. A piece that we've been listening to for many years and have loved. On this filming I love when they focus on the natural valvles horns for us hon enthusiasts. And love that you did when this genres is outside of your box. 👍

Wow. Can you imagine learning that piano part? Even being able to play it. Beethoven can be a bitch to play. How about scoring that for every instrument? How long would that take? Impressive. It’s a beautiful piece.

When you think Beethoven wrote this and could only hear it in his head due to his deafness!

Can you react to Agitata da due venti by Vivaldi sung by either Cecilia Bartoli or Simone Kermes?

Beethoven has written one of my favorite Piano Concertos (No. 3 in c-Minor). In my opinion the best interpretation is the recording with Alfred Brendel and Claudio Abbado.

I really like Zimerman with Berstein. :)

@@GiacomoPhilipp92 Can agree with that :) But I prefer the Brendel interpretation. Just personal preference.
