Yes, Debbie's blonde hair was bleached. They are a very unique band because they weren't afraid to experiment with different sounds, such as punk, new wave, disco, reggae, rap and pop.

Blondie is hard to put in a box....so glad you reacted to them. Other songs: Tide is High (reggae-ish), Rapture (rap-ish), Call Me (rock-ish), Atomic (new-wave-ish), The Hardest Part (rock-ish), detroit 442 (punk!), and many more. Prob my favorite band of all time.

Agree. I think they just finished a tour, and Debbie Harry is in her late 70s...this song reminds me of rollerskating at "The Roller Drome"...Debbie was hot..."Union City Blue" was another great b side, as you say, can not put Blondie in a box...but I do have the boxed set of CDs...remember those?...Peace Brother

Blondie is an American rock & new wave band co-founded by singer Debbie Harry & guitarist Chris Stein. They had a lot of great hits in the 70's-90's such as "Call Me", "Atomic", "The Tide Is High", “Rapture”, "Picture This", "Hanging On The Telephone", "I'm Gonna Love You Too", "One Way Or Another", "Sunday Girl", "Island Of Lost Souls", "War Child", "Maria" etc.

Their biggest hit is Call Me, you are correct, but this song is their most iconic song. It boggles my mind that anyone living in an English speaking country and being alive for at least 2-3 decades has never heard of a song that's been constantly on the radio, TV and movies for just as long.
@guyinsf
@guyinsf 9 месяцев назад
@@coffeetalk924 Sorry I should have made it more clear in my statement. My point about anyone never heard of Heart of Glass was about the lady in this clip. She is a young (ish) person, but certainly not 20 years old, but says she's never ever heard of this song before in her life. While it's possible I just find it not believable considering it's been constantly used in pop culture and played on the radio for like the last 40 years or so. I will still give her the benefit of the doubt though.

my favourite by Blondie is "one way or another" (the studio version since the live versions are not very well recorded as far as i remember).. a very creepy stalker song. Also, I would like to recommend Raye with escapism or black mascara or ice cream man (very heavy lyrics). Raye is an amazing british female singer. Really gifted and now, that she finally is free from her shitty old record label, she is able to do the music she wants to do. Check! her! out! :) You will not regret it.

Love it!!!! In 1978 I was 11 and at the time, everyone loved disco (so it seemed), at least everyone my age. As I got older there were a lot of people who hated the disco era. I love many genre's of music, from thrash metal, to country and even classical. So to hell what anyone thinks. If it sounds good to you. Then crank it up.

Man so many young folk confuse disco with what was roller skating music. Disco was dancing, roller skating was what was played at roller rinks. Then roller rinks did put floors in the middle for disco dancing. It was fun af. Go smoke a joint and drink a wine cooler at 14 , great times.

Blondie is a classic Heart of Glass is my favorite tune of hers. A of other female artists I wish you would visit are Joan Baez either the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down a cover of a song by the Band a 60-70s folk road group or her song Diamonds and Rust, her own composition about her love affair with Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan is a brilliant poet who has written hundreds of songs in almost every type country, rock, folk, rap. Many don't like his voice but his poetry is outstanding. Glace Slick the frontwoman for Jefferson Airplane has a unique voice and White Rabbit is perhaps their most popular tune. If you have ever read Alice in Wonderland you'll recognize the lyrics. The song is considered Psychedelic rock. Another female you might enjoy from the 60s is Melanie Safka, a folk singer with a unique voice as well Candles in the Rain (Lay Down) a song about her performance at Woodstock is probably her best known work, but others include Brand New Key, and Look What They've Done mo My Song

@annebaker9408
@annebaker9408 4 месяца назад
Wow….roller skating is 100% what I was doing to this…..you really got the vibe so spot on! Of course, everyone was also dancing to this at the local discos. A disco was a ‘place’….(now called night club or bar in some places), with a certain kind of young crowd who wanted to dance to to catchy, cool, new music that also had a beat and vibe that was easy to love and dance to. I really don’t think we were so focused on naming the ‘genre’ of new songs…..we either loved them or not….that was all. I was not bothered whether I was listening to ‘rock, disco or punk’, if the song was good….It never occurred to me to to try to ‘classify’ them….though I will say I understood, there was ‘popular music…ie, rock, punk, disco etc, and then there were things I could not dance to or didn’t like to….country, opera, classical, thought I still like them but didn’t want to hear them when out at a party or a disco.

The music just gave you the feeling that you had to get up and do something. I always credit Blondie for getting us out of disco. Blondie was formed in 1974 by Debborah 'Debbie' Harry (lead vocals) and her then-boyfriend Chris Stein (guitar) w/ Clem Burke (drums) in NYC... Debbie Harry worked as a waitress and Playboy bunny, and she had the attitude and voice that fit in the New York scene, which included The Ramones... Blondie was popular as a live act at CBGB's bar and Max's Kansas City (where Aerosmith used to play) and were signed in 1976... Their debut album was not a hit at the time, so Blondie switched labels in 1977 to Chrysalis Records. Strangely, their first hit was in Australia where 'In the flesh' charted at #2 as a single. Blondie released 2nd album 'Plastic letters' in 1978 and it became a hit in the UK w/ a hit single 'Denis'... Their 3rd album 'Parallel lines' in 1978 became a huge success w/ the disco crossover hit 'Heart of glass'... and the album sold 20 million copies worldwide w/ more hits like - 'Sunday girl'... 'Hanging on the telephone' ... 'One way or another'... Blondie wanted to be a band that could transcend genres and not be limited to 1 category of rock or pop music. 4th album 'Eat to the beat' (1979) went #1 in the UK w/ singles 'Dreaming'... 'Atomic' ... 'Call me'... 5th album 'Autoamerican' charted #7 in the US, #3 in the UK in 1980... the single 'Rapture' went to #1 and was the first major hit single w/ a rap section... 'The tide is high' was a reggae-influenced single. However, Blondie was plagued w/ infighting by 1981 and the 6th album 'The Hunter' (1982) was a commercial failure as the 80's decade began eroding their success as a 70's band... Blondie split soon after. In the 90's, Debbie Harry was willing to work w/ former Blondie members, and the band reformed for live shows in 1997 (w/ Harry, Chris Stein & Clem Burke) due to demand by fans... In 1999, Blondie released a comeback album 'No exit'... and scored a hit single 'Maria' going #1 in the UK - 20 years after their last hit. Blondie has continued to record and tour since.

This song actually had a few iterations before this version became a huge hit on radio. It became more “discofied” in production because that was what radio was playing in 78. Also- Blondie’s name came from not only Debbie’s blonde hair( and the catcalls that followed her bleaching it ) but, also a flippant reference to Adolf Hitler’s dog.

When they came on the scene doing punk and new wave, they played a lot at the famous (infamous) club CBGB's with others like The Talking Heads and Ramones. You're right, this is the song that crossed them over to disco. Even though I could never get into disco (death before disco), but since I grew up in a skating rink and since the owners were family friends I worked there part-time until my mid-40's. I'm sure others have mentioned that the band's name was Blondie, supposedly after Hitler's dog that he poisoned, and not from the lead singer Debbie Harry. She was so beautiful in an adorable way.

Blondie is a huge rabbit hole. They are essentially a punk-new wave/rock/pop band, but they can never be put in a box. They liked to dabble and could pull off any sound. Btw, that is not Debbie's usual singing style. Check out the official video for Detroit 442 for a more authentic Blondie. Anytime you listen to this band, keep in the back of your mind that the drummer is a secret weapon.

I loved that you both chuckled when she switched it up and said "soon turned out to be a pain in the ass" 😊😅😂

Blondie aka Debbie Harry has been singing for a long time, yes she does dye her hair. She has a huge catalog of music. I have been a fan of hers since the 70's she still sings releasing her last album in 2017 Polinator.

Blondie did cross genres and Heart of Glass was 100% a disco song. But listen to One Way or Another or Hangin' on the Telephone from the same record. Much more of their punk sound.

Great song, this older geezer bought the 45 rpm when it came out.

so did this old geezer right here. and I remember the 45 had a skip in it. remember when a new record sometimes had a skip in it? devastating! so I had to take it back to Woolworth's, for an exchange. and then the next one also had that same skip in it. I was outraged! so I went ahead and got the whole album PARALLEL LINES, and never looked back,. blondie was the first rock group that I discovered "on my own". all the other rock and roll I had been interested up to that point was through my family. my father loved rock music, and the Beatles or Earth Wind and Fire or Carole king was always playing. but blondie I had discovered on my own. they were like nothing I'd ever seen before. I got really into them. and it made me feel very adult for a 7th grader.
