it´s about jewish slaves in Babylon, Euphrates river in Mesopotamia.

The song is about the children of Israel being conquered and sent into exile in Babylon for years lamenting and dreaming of their return to Zion and freedom.

Based on a Bible story when the Israelites were captured by the Babylonians and taken away from their land. The Babylonians treated them so well they began to forget how to worship in their traditional way; the song is lamenting how they have forgotten how they used to pray. It was certainly number 1 in the UK chart and as you say, it was different. We all loved it.

This is actually a cover of the Jamaican reggae group The Melodians. Their original version dates back to 1970 and it’s worth checking out for comparison.

Boney M. was a disco band produced by Frank Farian that had international success, especially in the 1970s, with songs such as Daddy Cool, Rivers of Babylon and Ma Baker. Boney M. has sold over 150 million records worldwide, including more than 60 million singles. If I'm not mistaken, the contract with the group was limited to a certain period of time. If I'm not mistaken, after the group dissolved, they tried to found a new one, but that was banned because of copyright. The group was brought from Jamaica. Everything else was history. Imagine Frank Faraian went to Jamaica and got some unknown group and signed a temporary record deal with them like Boney M

I can just imagine Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah (Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) weeping as they were carried into captivity with the Children of Judah! I can almost see their unwavering faith in YHWH as they left Jerusalem for an unknown wicked land! Pray for the peace of Jerusalem and the restoration of the Kingdom, YHWH established by His Divine Providence, of Israel and Judah, in the Blessed name of YESHUA!

I do not want any negativity for what I am about to say. Boney M did have an album out in 1978 called Night Flight To Venus. When the group was singing on stage they would sing actual songs from the album but when it was on a video they were lip syncing. I just loved the group no matter what. A really good song at Christmas is Marys Boychild.
