OMG! 134340 is an underrated masterpiece! That line from RM "my cold heart is 248 degrees below freezing it stopped on the day you erased me, damn" -248 degress is the temperature in Pluto! BTS writes songs about topics that no other group makes and how they make it sound so good and lyrically interesting takes genius level talent!

So, you wanted a little bit about PLUTO, here's a lot about it! Haha 134340 is the reference number for Pluto. the whole song revolves around the fact Pluto was considered a planet until 2006, when scientists found a larger celestial body in space than Pluto, which was a dwarf planet (Eris, mentioned in the beginning verse by RM) and because of it, reconsidered the definition of a planet, deeming Pluto too small to still be considered one (it lost that status). BTS make a metaphor out of that for a human relationship, the feeling of being rejected, alienated and marginalised by someone, erased from their life (just how Pluto was rejected and erased from the planetary system). Pluto is basically a song telling a story about a relationship, how it used to be something but it's now something else, it deals with identity, rejection and isolation. The song an incredibly meaningful piece with clever lyrics that illustrate the pain of loving someone who no longer reciprocates that love. “There’s not much difference from yesterday / In the same day-to-day activities, only you don’t exist.” -- Like I said, it's an incredibly meaningful piece with clever lyrics that illustrate the pain of loving someone who no longer reciprocates that love. Throughout the whole song, the lyrics demonstrate a metaphor: comparing the speaker to the former planet of Pluto (now known as 134340 Pluto). This discovery led astronomers to question the definition of the term ‘planet’, which ultimately led to Pluto’s reclassification. In the context of the song, this alludes to the fact that the speaker’s ex-partner may have found someone new to love or made a realisation that caused them to end their relationship with the speaker, just as the discovery of Eris caused astronomers to reclassify Pluto. The ending of this relationship appears to cause great emotional distress on the speaker, most likely because he still loves his ex-partner. The lyrics “My cold heart is negative 248 degrees / It stopped the day you erased me” demonstrate this. The temperature -248 degrees Celsius is incredibly significant because it is approximately the coldest temperature ever recorded on Pluto. The way they used Pluto losing its planetary status as a metaphor for being rejected by someone you still love is genius. I was, and still am, a bit of a science/astronomy nerd and I remember feeling weird when they told us Pluto wasn't a planet. It's a rock rotating around the sun about 3 billion miles from us. Why is this giving me feelings? Needless to say, I fell in LOVE with 134340 the first time I listened to it and I'm still weirdly having feelings about that lump of ice and glad someone else was thinking about it enough to write a song about it.🤣

As someone that once, very literally, sat at the feet of the man that discovered Pluto, I was a science nerd and he was giving a talk at my high school teachers house since he taught at the University near her and was trying to increase an interest in science, I take Pluto getting the boot really personally.

I too grew up with Pluto as a planet, John. I still consider it a planet. Just because they foumd Eris and it was bigger shouldn't have changed Pluto's status. I mean, look at the other planets. Pluto was always smaller, so why change its designation just because found another? I will always consider Pluto a planet. Never a number. I do love how they used the status change as double. Comparing the change in status for Pluto to a very real relationship change. Simply beautiful.

In 2019 I visited the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff from where Pluto was first discovered. I didn't know BTS then but found them about 8 months later. Still it was amazing to be somewhere where such a discovery was made. This song has a really cool vibe. The rap line vocals are incredibly good and as usual written by them. The vocal line are at their absolute best and it always gives me a thrill to be able to discern which one of them is singing which lines. 134340 doesn't actually drip off the tongue so poor Pluto will struggle to be remembered in the future. This is one of my favorite BTS songs. It’s such a departure from what they’ve done before. Again, though, there is this up tempo tune & the lyrics are so sad: I’ve been erased from your life, but you are still the center of mine, and I can’t stop myself from circling around you, though I’m reduced to a mere number like so many others. RM really is a genius & on another level when it comes to lyrics.

I usually don't comment but I really love this song :) I definitley agree that Pluto should've stayed a planet. Funny story - I took an astrophysics class in universuty, and the professor was there at the International Astronomical Union when the vote on Pluto's demotion took place, and she voted for it to be demoted :(( The entire class was so shocked, some students even jokingly said that they can't stay in the class because they're hurt on Pluto's behalf.
