@@fryke Agreed. Not their best, but Queen's average stuff is better than most bands' _BEST_ stuff. (Queen doesn't have much average stuff, most of it is great). News of the World is my personal favorite.
Written by Roger Taylor composed on guitar. Queen never performed it Europe but a live recording from Japan in 1982 is available on the Queen On Fire - Live At The Bowl DVD. The video was inspired by the science fiction movie “THX 1138” directed by a young George Lucas & the novel “1984”. Note: I read that novel in High School & it creeped me out. Anyway -
It was only Freddie who liked this album.. Brian and Roger hated it, but there are some good songs on there as well.. Like "Put Out The Fire" , "Life is real", (song for Lennon) and of course " Under Pressure"!! :))
Ohhh Hot Space 😍 really enjoyed your reaction. I personally like the album a lot. But my favorite is Back Chat. There is also a music video for this song.
I’m from that era - I was 16 when Bo Rap came out in the US. Hot Space was credited by Michael Jackson as inspiring/influencing his Thriller album and reportedly said HS was ahead of its time. But not all of QUEEN liked it because it was dance music. And Calling all girls is better without the video - not their best!
'Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)' is Freddie's tribute for John, written in John's style. I think you'll appreciate it. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Hot Space is a favoured Queen Album of mine. This track is light pleasant 'good music' neat listening. Freddie, the intellectual artist of the four took them places they didn't prefer but he also took them to Crazy Little Thing Called Love, went with them to Fat Bottomed Girls and I'm In Love with my Car, etc...see that's why Queen's a special Band. Great reaction (deep)...appreciated the time you gave.
I like the Hot Space LP. Tracks “Dancer”, “Put out the fire”, “life is real” are worth checking out. But you are right what you said. It was totally different to anything the band had released upto that point. So fans were saying “what the hell is this?!”. But as Freddie says at Milton Keynes, “It’s only a bloody record!” 🤣🤣. It’s Queen so it’s better than a lot of artists around! Recommend that you listen to the whole LP 🙂
@gingergazelle Hot Space _IS_ definitely a departure from their previous work, but what is Queen, if not diverse? I wasn't surprised by it, but maybe a little disappointed b/c it's not as good as their older stuff, but I think that's the case for most bands. That being said, I still like the album. The only song I didn't like was "Las Palabros De Amor".(first Queen song I _ever_ disliked).
Oh yes I love this song is so funny and happy. The best track of the Hot Space album and the video is amazing. Great reaction Doe as always, thank you.😁❤️ I don't know if you had listen to Barcelona of Freddie and Montserrat Caballé just saying it's an amazing song and performance.☺️
You gotta love the early 80's high tech in this video it didn't age well, I think the dance tracks on side one threw a lot of people off and the fact there was only one real heavy rock song ( Put Out The Fire ) having said that the up-tempo funk track ( Staying Power ) is one of the best here a real spanner in the works
Great! While I admit that some of the tracks are a bit of an acquired taste, Hot Space is a good album and I don't think it deserves such a bad reputation. Brian and Roger were definitely not that crazy about the fact that the album delved more into the disco/funk category (major understatement). The available live renditions are awesome too! This is a great song, studio and live! The video for Calling all girls was actually based/inspired by an underrated George Lucas film called THX 1138, set in a futuristic dystopian society similar to Orwell's 1984 and they have to take drugs to suppress emotions like love. I noticed Brian trying to keep a straight face. Calling all girls live in Tokyo 1982 (audio only) is awesome, definitely one of my favorites! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TD0viCPR3wc.html The songs soul brother, under pressure, las Palabras des amore, calling all girls and action this day (both) live in Tokyo, backchat and staying power both live at the bowl are among my favorites.
You've been missed! HOT SPACE has a winner for me with Cool Cat (a funky bass line guaranteed to get you moving)'; BACK CHAT is dancing Freddie.. for that alone you have to watch. Double meaning lyrics I suspect. What I love about it is that sweet bond between Freddie & John is visually evident in a few of the shots. (Roger & Brian were not on board.) You can feel that same vibe in STAYING POWER. HOT SPACE is really eclectic -- but so were the 80s (having been there). The video that goes with LAS PALABRAS DE AMOR has a charm about and easy to see they knew their fan base there. No one thinks of UNDER PRESSURE on this album, but low and behold. As I type this I am seeing more of the thread between the songs -- connections between people. Today is the climate for PUT OUT THE FIRE. BODY LANGUAGE was bad boy Freddie but with a locker room all body types thee redeeming scene of the video. LIFE IS REALhas recently made me rethink my dislike for Lennon.
Nice, thoughtful reaction as always Doe. Hot Space is definitely not my favourite Queen album by a long way, but I don't hate it either. It stands out like a sore thumb in the pantheon of Queen albums though, even to this day. But this is a decent track and there are other good ones on there. A personal favourite for me is Dancer, which I can imagine banging out of nightclubs in 2022. And, of course, Under Pressure is on there. But, as you're both a fan of Queen and the Beatles, the song from this album you MUST check out is Life Is Real. This was Freddie's tribute to John Lennon who, at this time, had only recently been killed, and it's very beautiful. Keep up the good work!
Actually, it seems to me to be about a dystopian, technocratic future whose oppressive regime is broken down by the rebellious act of love. One suspects that the record was released in Poland because 1982 was the time of Lech Walensa and the Solidarity movement at the Gdansk shipyards uprising against Communist rule, and it was thought the record would bolster the cause.
This album was meant to be their disco phase but it's about 5 years too late and while it has a couple of great tracks such as under pressure it really feels like a album made in a hurry. It's not great but the final track is quality.
The whole "Hot Space" album's just a bop, basically. It's not bad music per se, but you simply won't find a masterpiece on it, which is kinda very rare for Queen. Don't get me wrong, "Under Pressure" is a great song, one of the best pop songs ever. Meaningful. Wonderfully produced, too. But a masterpiece, compared to the likes of Bo Rhap, Innuendo, March of the Black Queen? Come on... It's a bopping good album, but there's a reason it's at or near the bottom of basically everyone's list of Queen albums. But then again: It's still Queen, so the songs are good.
This video is inspired in George Lucas' sci-fi/cyberpunk movie from the seventies called 'THX 1138'. Trailer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eHgqfVQWv7s.html
Always loved this song and this album. People who say that Queen should only make 'bohemian rhapsodies', are stupid. It's a shame that Brian and Roger seem to have succumbed to the public pressure and dis their own creation. Especially when their songs on this album are much stronger than Freddie's. To me, Action This Day will always be more important than many songs that are supposed to represent the 'queen sound' (like Play the game, You're my best friend etc.)
Roger didn't like the video, saying the song had nothing to do with robots. I also read that he was not particularly fond of the entire Hot Space album. Can't blame him. 😉 LOL- not my favorite either.
@@DoeDarling Yes it does. It is just clips from other videos. They never made a video of it together. It is still worth checking out. Great, great song. Take care.
Enjoyed the song, but the music video, not so much! 1st time hearing this song, and it's always great to hear that classic QUEEN sound. IMO, there are some really good songs on HOT SPACE. "Put Out the Fire" is my favorite from the album. Maybe the influence of the "disco" sound was a turn off for some early QUEEN fans. Thanks so much! ☮
I’m with Roger and Brian on this Album I’m not a fan of it either among all of their fantastic Albums this one just wasn’t up to their high standards, I feel it was more a record companies idea to release it a bit of a rushed Album, But that’s just my opinion.
I actually like the song not so sure about the video though 😂 Hot Space is not my favourite Queen album some good songs on it though Under Pressure, Life is Real, Las Palabras De Amor, Back Chat x
Personally, even as a mega Queen fan, I think the hot space album is mostly garbage. My favourite track from the album is las Palabras de amor. There were a couple of live performances of “staying power” which were great because they completely changed the musicality of the track, other than the original track is garbage. It was a very experimental album from the band and ultimately didn’t work for me.
Well, Hot Space...not the best album of the band for me, sorry 😁 BUT there are 3 fantastic tracks : of course under pressure, life is real & cool cat ♥️♥️♥️
Okay, where to begin? First of all, i think Hot Space is a stupid name for this album, and it's not one of their best. However, Queen's average stuff is better than most band's best stuff. I like this album. Yes, it _IS_ different from their older stuff, but isn't diversity one of Queen's strong suits? Listen to "Modern Times Rock & Roll", then listen to "You Take My Breath Away". If you didn't know either song, you'd never guess it's the same band. 3 of the songs on this album are dance club-like songs: "Staying Power", "Dancer", and "Back Chat". "Cool Cat" is one of my favorites. "Las Palabros De Amor" is the first Queen song I ever disliked. Up until then, I had not heard one I didn't like. The rest of the album is OK, but OK is not what I expect from them. I expect greatness. I thought the girl Freddie was sitting with, that you thought was Roger (and later, John), I thought looked a lot like _YOU_ ; short hair, very attractive.😉😘 I think you should always hear the song _without_ the video for your first listen. It distracts from the music. "Calling All Girls" is my favorite from this album, followed by "Cool Cat".
Song is great. Terrible video lol. There are RU-vid videos of Roger and Brian analysing their videos. Rogers response to this in hindsight is very funny. He does not mince his words about the video and how it has bugger all to do with the song...
This song is bright and breezy but sadly, a little bit forgetful too. Oh and one of the guy´s worst videos too. Hot Space is far and away Queen´s worst album. Well, certainly for anyone brought up on their imperious 70´s output. Best track by miles is Under Pressure but that feels shoe-horned in and totally out of place. Honorary mentions also to Put out the Fire(a Brian Rocker), Las Palabras de Amor (Gorgeous) and Life is Real( Freddie´s sublime tribute to John Lennon). Otherwise disco-infused disposable guff and absolutely not Queen.
@@linaskranauskas Err no. Queen 2 is a great album, Sheer Heart Attack is a great album, Night at the Opera is a great album. Hot Space has a few great songs. Big difference.
