John Deacon was the "funk" of QUEEN, in my opinion. The bass lines in his songs like "I Want To Break Free" and "Another One Bites The Dust" are just a small example. Thanks much!
Ive always loved Hot Space. Not comparing it to any other album. But when it comes to the writing I feel this really sets the tone for Freddies mr.Bad Guy album.
Richard have you noticed on the live at the bowl dvd that during staying power deac's is playing rythm guitar and not bass? i watched it dozens of times before i noticed! 👑✊🇬🇧
Oh yes I also love this song eversince I Heard it especially Freddie's falsetto...wwuuuu.. Tnx for discovering one of Queen hidden gems... More to discover..
This was so fun to watch. It is on my "mix tape" that is in my car, lol. There is another song that I keep on repeat... "Let Me In Your Heart Again". Originally on the cutting room floor, not released until 2014. Freddie's voice is ..... heaven.
Everything was Freddie and John! Brian and Roger didn't want any part of it, and yet an extraordinary, hidden gem was born. John played all the instruments - a testament to his all round musicianship.

"Don't Try So Hard" is a wonderful Queen song but at the same time underrated, just like "Cool Cat".
This song is strictly John and Freddie. John played drums (drum machine was used also) and guitar as well as bass. Neither Roger or Brian wanted anything to do with this song. I like the mellow groove. Thank you for reacting to this deeper cut.
Thanks, Doe - this has been said to be the only Queen song where Freddie sang ONLY falsetto; said that Brian and Roger wanted nothing to do with it -- all John and Freddie -- :)
Thanks for this one Doe. I've been a fan of the band since waay back in '73 - I'm a old lady- and this one is my go to song. Whether I'm feeling grumpy, stroppy or just plain blugh, a couple of plays of this and all is well in my world again.
Just discovered this song in an Amazon commercial a few days ago and been addicted to it since and haven't missed a dose! And u can definitely be in love with a song!!!
I was the same way I had no idea this existed until it played on that commercial.what gave it away of course the vocals and that Freddy Mercury bobel head in the commercial!!👍
you reacted to this tune pretty much like I did the first time I heard it, when I was like 9 or 10, when this album came out. I was just floored and, yeah, speechless...and couldn't stop playing it, over and over..and over again, in a loop.
Ohhhh I love this song mjauuuuu. Brian and Roger dont whant to play, they think it was to much like discko…..hmm……if you hear in the start Freddie start in falset…..and then he go down and say «I knew that» ohh that is soooo sexy! Hear it again and listen, its in the start 😻
Another song entirely sung in falsetto is Pain Is So Close To Pleasure. An homage to Diana Ross and The Supremes and Tamla Motown sound. Of course it is also Deacon/ Mercury composition
Which Diana Ross songs are you contemplating? I've never heard Freddie or anyone else describe him as a fan of the Diana Ross, mor do I think this song resembles her Musical Style. On the other hand, Freddie was listening alot to Quincy Jones' album The Dude. He also admired Prince. I think those are more likely candidates for influences, not to mention that John Deacon was into funk music
Cool Cat … We get Freddie in full falsetto!! Now that’s a treat! 🤩 “See What A Fool I’ve Been” (BBC Sessions) is another gem to react to! Thank you Doe 🌿🌸🌿🌼🌿
David was actually right IMO. His backing vocals were a little distracting and the song, to me, sounds better without it. I guess David felt the same way. By the way, Doe, YOU are a Cool Cat!
So happy you love the song but was there really a chance you wouldn‘t? Yes, it‘s the perfect song to chill. Very smooth. Queen could do anything in music. Even lullabies. The song Dear Friends from the Sheer Heart Attack album. It‘s only one minute long. Very sweet.
This has got to be my favorite Queen song. Freddie's voice is out of this Universe! I've put the link to the original version with David Bowie below.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KH07DvA-EwU.html
Hi Doe, I know the feeling! I learned about this song with one of our special ed students! She is just 5! She loves this song. I have a video of her just enjoying the song chilling out in her little wheelchair! You can tell she is in another place! Very powerful song! ❤
Oh thank gosh you finally listened to COOL CAT! It will just send me...elsewhere. It can lift me out of the doldrums. That interpretive dance you described is exactly what happens if you get up and move with it. And yes, the smile comes naturally . Glad to see mutual joy!
Nothing personal to David Bowie, but I'm glad he removed his voice because I think it's perfect just the way it is with just Freddie and John. 👑🌈💙🫶 edit: A snippet of this song was in a commercial a few years back.
Cool Cat is actually a good song but it’s a step too far on Hot Space. Freddie turns into Diana Ross and Barry Gibb on this one and it’s worth it for that. The Bowie version is rumoured to be on initial pressings of Hot Space before it was pulled! That rhythm guitar is Deacon too I reckon. He had a black Fender Tele with gold hardware. You can see him play this on the Milton Keynes show during Staying Power which has a synth bass. Check out Pain Is So Close To Pleasure on A Kind Of Magic which is a not to Chain Reaction by Diana Ross. Same rhythm too!!!
A lot of folk either ignore of forget Hot Space. It s a good album, but it was not Queen to many folk. I once saw it pointed out that IF Michael Jackson had released this, he would have had a massive hit. Back then it was OK for a black guy to do this music, not white British Rockers. Its a shame because the album has two halves. Freddie and John basically doing the Funk, and the other side has Under Pressure, which everyone loved.
I believe this was the final song he sang in all falsetto. While I’m not a huge fan of this album I like this and backchat a lot. I like the cruisey gay vibes in those songs but I totally get why the other guys weren’t into it. And you’re beautiful. Let’s go cruising in my Model Y Performance.
Hot Space gets a lot of hate, but it took risks unlike The Works, Magic, The Miracle etc ... the last Queen album to do so. Oh to add Deacy played pretty much all the instruments electric piano aside (Freddie)
How nice you liked it. Reminds me of my freshman year in college. *I leave you a link with an extended version (David Bowie rip on vocals)* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ew9AhDslXJw.html By the way, that channel *DJDiscoCat* is very well recommended.
Fyi this is the Bowie version, which is still pretty good, although I think I like the album version better ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BojSYX3M1_g.html
For me, the Hot Space album barring a couple of tracks is just terrible. This is what happens when you let outside influences like Paul Prenter get involved with the ideas. Queen have always been an eclectic band using multiple styles and genres, but with this, you reach a point and the only thing to say is that it is forgettable and garbage. This is of course my opinion and you are entitled to yours 🙂
