There have been many talented singer/songwriters, Cat Stevens was one of the best, and wrote some of the most beautiful songs.
@michellepetrillo2235
@michellepetrillo2235 2 года назад
From Songfacts: In this anti-pollution song, Cat Stevens admits we've progressed a long way through technological advances, but in doing so, he protests that we have destroyed much of our environment by trucks "pumping petrol gas" and by building over and cementing our children's play areas in cities. Stevens grew up in London, where open spaces for children to play were rare. As a schoolboy, his playground was in a basement with little exposure to the open air. When he read a story in Time Out London about how green spaces were vanishing in towns, it prompted him to write the song as a reminder that progress shouldn't come at the expense of nature.

Asia and BJ, Cat is talking about all of the spaces in our environment being taken up with other things, i.e.; cosmic trains and the like, where are the Children suppose to play and be children, (remember this was 1970 when it was safe for kids to go out and play). Hope that helps. See ya

Do you notice what the songs did back in the 70's? They were not about the high notes or the endless runs, It was about the story and the journey. The songs took you to a special place that only lived inside of you and nowhere else.

Every song on "Tea For The Tillerman" is excellent. This one is a favorite of mine. My 7th grade home room teacher (would have been 1973) had a poster in our classroom with the lyrics to this song on it. I'm a Cat fan from very far back!

The word that best describes Cat's music is "earnest". Not just earnest, but EARNEST. He was very good at being very serious in a very melodious way. He wasn't really a protest singer, but he wrote a number of beautiful protest songs, this one paramount among them. In this song, at least as far as I understand it, he's speaking with the basic voice of youth speaking to the "powers that be", the adults, the ones who let things get so bad and don't seem to care how bad they are. (This is an eternal generational battle, going back a long, long time.) Another song of this type but more hopeful is "Peace Train". I think you'd like that one very much. It became something of an anthem. :)

Yes, a great comment, there are many mentions of songs from Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat albums, which l agree are probably his best two albums. However he wrote many wonderful songs on later albums like Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner that hardly get a comment, there is another beautiful track on Buddha album called King of Trees, another 'protest' song and one my favourites.

This song off his "Tea For the Tillerman" record, his best effort I think. Inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF in 2014. His most well-known song was Father and Son, but he wrote many hits. Must listens: Hard Headed Woman, Wild World, Moonshadow, and Peace Train. Saw him live in Memhis, TN in 1975 when he was very young and vibrant. His voice has always captivated me. I have been a Cat Stevens fan for over 50 years the song is to be taken literally. As we continue to build our world we forget about the children, now we are facing a crisis on Earth, with climate change and pollution, Cat Stevens wrote this in the 70s he could see where we were headed. So please take it as it is written he always said his songs speak for themselves. We have to stop and think what we are doing to our planet and to our children the Next Generation.

You pretty much got the meaning of this song. When I was a teenage boy in the early seventies, I totally understood the meaning of this song. I loved the song, but it also made me cry hearing it. The song is about over building, and polluting to the point where there are no longer places that children can just go outside and play safely. It is about what we lose when we over build, and overuse technology, and chemicals.

I've always thought that this song had a similar message to Joni Mitchell's, "Taxi" where she says, "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot". But having said that, this is a pretty deep cut. If you're starting out with Cat Stevens' songs, maybe "Wild World", "Father & Son", "Peace Train" or "Moonshadow" may have been a little more mainstream.

It's kind of interesting to see some confusion of what is meant. I think that hearing this song in 1970, the thought of "where do the children play" was immediately recognized as where are the open, outdoor places for children to play and explore. Contrasted with jumbo planes, long roads and skyscrapers we knew this was about urban development vs nature. Today, I'm not sure that people's first thoughts are of outdoor spaces when they think of children playing.

It's really depressing to see people totally missing the point of a song, especially when the message is so crystal clear. It's about the harm people do to the environment in the name of progress. And yes, he is being literal. Airports, highways, skyscrapers...etc. leave nowhere for children to play. Traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere. The "you" of the song means the people who are responsible for damaging and polluting - that includes all of us to varying degrees. Again, it's depressing and disturbing that this needs to be spelt out.

They are talking about how progress, planes, cars, buildings- pollution, paving over all the grass, damaging earth- where will the children play, when everything's gone?

Another song in this vein is Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell. Both songs talk about the increasing industrialization that is taking over peoples lives.
