I think you'd love the whole "Tea for the Tillerman" album. It's right up your emotional alley, and it's beautifully performed. And I 100% support your position on separating art from the artist.
The movie, Harold And Maude, is a must see. Cat Stevens does the entire soundtrack to this cult classic. It's ranked 65th of the top 500 all time great films and 4th in the top ten cult classics and one of my all time favs. Do yourself a favour and rent this one.
My favorite scene was when Harold takes a hatchet out of his coat pocket and chops his hand off. An Academy Award should have been awarded to Bud Cort.
This song always makes me think of "Harold and Maude", one of my favorite movies of all time. It's sort of a quirky underground movie with Cat Stevens tracks from this era sprinkled throughout. I think you'd like it. It would make for a great reaction vid.
Although I loved almost all the 60s and 70s singer/songwriters, Cat was one of my early favorites! He had such an unusual voice and singing style, to say nothing of his amazing lyrics! thanks for getting back to Cat! He has so many beautiful songs! Also, I wish you (or SOME cool reactor) would do a patreon vid of you watching "Harold & Maude". It's such a counter-culture icon, and just SO funny, touching, sick, dark, sad and full of joy! Finding albums that you could just put on and flip over and enjoy were kinda rare. Cat Steven's had a bunch and they just had a great vibe when listened to one after another
Tea for the Tillerman was just one of those albums. It was a warm blanket you wrapped around yourself on a chilly night when you wanted to stare at the stars. Simple perfection, which really applies to most of Cat Stevens early works. Thank you Daniel for keeping to the music and not the noise, beautiful review.🎶
This song is so good, I burst into tears everytime over the sheer emotion of the music. I had this album in the 70's and we as kids would listen to it over and over again. Cat Stevens, his music just moves you, literally. I've listened to him for 50 yrs. Great reaction Daniel. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Daniel, I truly enjoy your insight and enthusiasm as you discover these great songs. I grew up listening to Cat Stevens 60's and 70's and can remember thrill of running to the record store when a new album came out. Then taking it home and placing it on the turntable, listening intensely to each new track. No one produced better more meaningful music the he did during that time periid.
Take some time and listen to Foreigner Suite in its entirely, a true masterpiece that was overlooked by many because it was to long to play on most radio stations. Keep up the great work!!!
Played at my cousin's funeral. He was born mentally handicapped and passed away in his late 20s. It was a perfect tribute and a reminder of what's most important in life

Providing the entire soundtrack for the movie "Harold and Maude", Cat Stevens cemented his music into the soundtrack of many folks coming of age during the Vietnam era . . . Aside from all the other wonderful aspects of that Cult Movie its anti-war messages were so cleverly and humorously woven the script as to bring a smile to my face just thinking of the wonderful Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort . . . Thanks for the memories young Daniel . . .
This album should be listened to from beginning to end. I have the original vinyl which I'm shocked I did not wear out over the years. Cat Stevens helped me through some tough times. I cherish his music. (I've now got his re-worked version which is so mature.)
All of Cat's songs are great, some better than others. This song and "Father and Son" are the only songs I've heard on reaction channels. They're both good songs but neither would be in my personal top 20. I just wonder sometimes why it's always the same two songs; it's the same with Elton John, always "Tiny Dancer" which I think is far from being his best. And I can't forget Gordon Lightfoot who I listened to constantly when I was younger, always "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". I understand it's a tribute to the people who lost their lives but then again, musically it's not on par with most of his other songs. I'm done complaining for now, I just wish people would be a little less repetitive. One thing I have no complaints about is you, your videos are very entertaining.
I agree 100% !! If asked to name their 2 favorite songs by Cat Stevens , many (if not most) of what you’ll get back in response would be “Wild World” and “Father and Son.” I love these songs, but neither would rank in my #1 and #2 position.
@@Bill_Jones. Hey Bill, I think the reason for these song choices may be that many people are only familiar with the songs they heard on the radio. Some of us delved deeper and had an extensive amount of albums by certain artists, so we have a much larger array of songs to pick from. The most popular songs were definitely not always the best ones.
This entire album is pure gold, I highly recommend reacting to every song on it. Thank you for sticking up for the artist, people are allowed to learn and grow. The point of this song really comes home today, the world population has more than doubled since this song came out, water is becoming a precious resource and so is housing. Climate change is upon us as are pandemics and there are people still fighting to keep us reliant on fossil fuels. We'll bring about our own extinction. I hope you watched John Oliver's piece about rents from June 19.
I just realized this song is featured in an episode of the beautiful, well written, and very emotional now canceled This Is US. Watching those moments during the song, will make you tear up 😢and make you smile. 😀
Interesting how much more pertinent this song is as we continue to winnow this world that our children will inherit. It's not just that there is less outside to play in and it's so much more fraught and less verdant, they are more likely to find it more attractive to spend time in a virtual world rather than the real one.

Sometimes the simplest things are the most profound. Great analysis, Daniel. This is the song that first turned me on to Cat Stevens, and it moves me to this day, 52 years later. (BTW, you are wise to not be overly affected by things someone might say. It was stupid and wrong, but he is nonetheless a great artist.)
A great album and reaction. Have you put any thought into what song(s) you will be doing for Canada Day (July 1st)? Stan Rogers (a Canadian folk legend) did an acapella song called "Northwest Passage" which some consider a second Canadian anthem. Though I prefer "Barrett's Privateers" or "Mary Ellen Carter" (live version from Between the Breaks. Bruce Cockburn is another old folkie, who is known for his thoughtful lyrics and guitar work. Perhaps Bruce's "Wondering Where The Lions Are" or "If I had a Rocket Launcher". I would have suggested Lightfoot's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" but you have done that. Any other suggestions chat?
@@patswanson2870 I would probably choose Blackie And the Rodeo Kings or Bruce Cockburn or the Barenaked Ladies or Great Big Sea or... the list goes on, over McLauchlan. I find his music a bit too simple and repetitive but that is just a personal preference. I bought "Whispering Rain" when it came out and I have seen him in concert but I found the stories about his songs generally better than the songs themselves.
Not referring to Cat here, but there are without a doubt many unsavory characters that have been involved in writing, playing, and producing music over the years. I can't be bothered to do a background check on everyone, though, before I listen to music. Just judge the work on its merit. Karma will sort out the rest.
Not heard this track before. Wasn't this written years before he became Muslim but i hardly think it matters. He's said a few things but was honest enough to admit when he hadn't stated his opinion properly or had reconsidered. It's a song that still matters as little has changed. In Glasgow Scotland we find everything green shrinking as more buildings go up in the wrong places.
This reminds me of a parable. "A man from the city drives out to the country and meets a farmer who shows him the land. As they stand in a meadow of flowers overlooking the beautiful mountains the man says, 'This would make a great place to build on' to which the farmer replies, 'It makes a pretty good meadow too'.
That other instrument is a vibraphone...steel keys played with soft mallets and beneath the keys is a set of hollow tubes with a rotating valve that provides the vibrating tone.
I would agree but I'd add that Cat was a spiritual person. Like most of us, he was growing and searching for something more to be enlightened. I'm old and senile now but recall says he didn't become serious about a search of a religion until prior to his "Buddha and the Chocolate Box" album. Many thought he became a Buddhist. I'm not a historian just a fan of good music. Also, we all make mistakes and say regretful words, though maybe not as vile. Daniel, those of us that watch your channel clearly know that you do not harbor hate based upon religion ... you have discussed your beliefs and general skepticism over the years. That doesn't make you a hater. Keep posting interesting videos with analysis. Dig a layer deeper when you can because artists like Cat and Elton have great songs that are not getting reacted .... Look here, Daniel, if you wish to be perceived as a hipster, you must watch the fantastic freak-flag flying film "Harold and Maude." The soundtrack and film are inseparable. "I should like to change into a sunflower most of all."
When I was young we played baseball, football, basketball, etc. in the street and the ages ranged from 10 to 40s (but mostly kids). I haven't seen that happen for decades. Some people came over and there were two girls standing about 2 feet from each other (one in her 30's and the other 14) but instead of talking they were texting. I felt sorry for them.
One of the best one two three punch three song openings on any album: "Where Do The Children Play?" "Hard Headed Woman" and "Wild World" "Sad Lisa" is also beautiful and "Father And Son" a touching song. But those first three songs?...golden. And recorded/mastered so so well. Like butter. As far as the personal lives and beliefs of my favorite artists, Ive learned that for me it is better I not dig too deep. Bob Dylan is a perfect example of this. Being a Bobcat ;) I use to want to know how he wrote and what motivated his writing. So I would read and read about him trying to grasp his mind and how he was able to write such songs. However, I found myself instead put off by the person. And for a long time this affected how I heard his music. I learned my lesson there and never have done that with another artist. Sometimes the art is enough. Keeps things open for interpretation without too much personal baggage from the artists life, ways and history influences.
You might want to try Rubylove as it uses traditional Greek instruments that you're unlikely to have heard before. Absolutely beautiful song on Teaser and the Firecat.
I doubt you will be surprised by the staple of my lunchtime tunes on the corner of Wellesley and Younge 1977..…. He did it much better than I ever could... Great mix on this one... Listen to the rest of the album for yourself, video if you must but better with just a friend.
Daniel, I think On The Road to Findout, also from Tillerman, will be right up your alley. I always prefered my Cat with an edge in his voice - as in the ending of this particular song, soulful and surprising in a folk-rock setting, but then he did have his R&B period with Foreigner, Buddha & The Chocolate Box and Numbers... Cat's concern about ecology led him to write a follow-up, the hard-hitting Ruins. (As for his reaction supporting the fatwa on Salman Rushdie for having written his novel The Satanic Verses, I also swore him off for a few years 'til he apologized for his early religious fervour which brought him dangerously close to islamist propaganda instead of peaceful muslim beliefs.)

I recommend you read "Harold & Maude" by Colin Higgins then watch the film. It won't ruin it I promise. I read it when I was 14/15. I have rarely laughed so hard.
