I was working my way around Australia with my mate in 1987 in an old Valiant station wagon, we were driving north from Perth and my mate bought 2 tapes, the first and second Chisel albums. Until then, I 'd thought of them as just another pop band. Man, was I wrong. I've been hooked ever since. So many of their songs define different aspects of Australia, from Bow River to Sweethearts. It wouldn't be Australia without Cold Chisel.
Don't be so surprised...you are listening to one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded by possibly the best band you'll ever have the pleasure to listen to..
Beautifully said, the ONLY reason they didn't rip US apart was , there American manager was a dick and most of the band, wanted to come home, BUT man you missed out!! If you want to blow your mind, breakfast at sweet hearts and when the war is over, you will be in tears awesome 🤘
Barnsey and Mossy’s voices blend so perfectly it’s ridiculous. Ian Moss is a successful solo artist in his own right. Fun fact: my intellectually disabled brother is a huge Mossy fan and has seen him play in our home state ofTasmania, Australia, at least four times. Ian always says hello to him, happily has photos taken with him, and REMEMBERS my brother’s NAME. That’s a man right there.
Ditto , from Christiano in Straya . Grew up listening to Chisel a bunch of other awesome bands . Would not be surprised if I attended my first concert "in utero"...
Was working with the Army in Timor about 15 years ago. Ian moss flew out and did a private show for a couple hundred soldiers. Lasted about 3 hours and he hung around afterwards to take photos with anyone who asked. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen 👌
Every member of Chisel are extremely talented, they all could sing, wrote their own songs. 50 years since i first saw them and they are still on my daily playlist. Jimmy is still my schoolgirl crush ❤. Check out "When the war is over, " from the same concert 🔥
Chisel are the only Australian band (and probably one of the few internationally) where every member of the band wrote a number 1 hit song. Thats some serious talent in one group!
I had a feeling you would love it! I second listening to Wild thing, it’s absolute 🔥 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7-xDY3-kLCU.htmlsi=eYGux8UrOQ1ssVeX
I think you'll enjoy "if something is wrong with my baby", soul/blues style, Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham & Desiel.. 2 of the best singers alive & killer guitar... but warning... hearing John will send you down another rabbit hole! There's nothing he doesn't sing well!
Khe Sanh, Standing on the Outside, Rising Sun, Choir Girl, Star Hotel, Saturday Night, Flame Trees, Houndog, Letter to Allan, Ita, Four Walls, Forever Now, My turn to Cry, My Baby, No good for you, Best kept Lies, Breakfast at Sweethearts, Wild Colonial Boy etc
was going to say something similar, too much fm airplay back in the day and i did not like /barnsies voice - but a few years back i started to appreciate the songs and lyrics, just brilliant.
"I've been working hard/12 hours a day/ and the money I've saved won't buy my youth again". Cold Chisel is poetry for the working man. A lot of Aussie references but a lot of stuff in there that I bet others could relate to as well. And the melodies and delivery were amazing too.
Every chisel song is a classic - Saturday Night, Forever Now, Khe Sanh, Cheap Wine, You Got Nothing I Want, Four Walls, When The War Is Over, Choir Girl… and so many more - doesn’t matter where you start you will love them all.
Flame trees, Khe Sanh and Cheap Wine are 3 of my favorite songs of all time. Love Ian Moss’ Tucker’s daughter and sooo much of Jimmy but my faves are Working Class Man and Driving Wheels.
Nice reaction, as an Aussie, Cold Chisel is an institution down under, first saw them in 1978 supporting Peter Frampton. Check out “Keh San” it’s an Aussie anthem.
Barnsey = Jimmy Barnes singing “Soothe me “with Sam Smith ; and singing “ When something is wrong with my Baby “ with Farnsey = John Farnham. Saw Mossy recently in an acoustic concert …. Fantastic 🎉🎉
Cold chisel are phenomenal, they have not just 1 but 2 amazing lead singers and all their songs are unique and don’t sound the same. Check out “when the war is over” live from this same concert Ringside 2003
I totally agree, I love the reaction videos, but so often they don't play the recorded versions which are usually the best versions. Once ya hear them you get a good feel for the songs then the live or acoustic versions sound a lot better. Just my opinion.
Aussie here, 57 years old. Grew up with Cold Chisel in my formative years and have never stopped listening to them. Saw them in many venues, pubs in their early days, too many concerts to name. Whenever I’d take a date out it would be Cold Chisel playing in the car whether she liked it or not! When the War is Over Flame Trees Saturday Night Breakfast at Sweethearts Khe Sahn Cheap Wine All songs you should cover. There’s a relentless thread of lost opportunities, lost love, melancholy, redemption and bitterness in their timeless songs. One of the greatest Aussie bands ever formed. If you ever happen to be in an Aussie Pub when Khe Sahn starts playing be prepared to hug and sing with your fellow man! Peace.
Barnsey and Mossy, Chisel. Aussie legends!! Ian's solo work is also very good, and of course you know about Jimmy. His family are also amazingly talented.
Three great singers - Steve Prestwich (RIP) on drums also released a solo album, and he's brilliant. NEXT - For Jimmy Barnes, "Wild Thing" Live in Last Stand Concert (Jimmy at his absolute WILDEST), then a mellow, older Jimmy "Stone Cold" (with Joe Bonamassa), and for Ian Moss, "Georgia" (beautiful).
another fun fact for you - both Mossy and Barnesy are real humanitarians. I have spent many years of my life in remote areas.. so to put on a concert you'll be lucky if you sell a thousand tickets.. basically the size of a football pitch. (and smaller depending on the town). Mossy used to regularly visit a place called Tom Price in the north west of WA and Barnsey also - including playing in Karratha. when they do shows this size, you are all basically in the Mosh pit and the band enters the stage walking through the crowd and these guys are just so unpretentious and down to earth. real legends.
Best. Band. Ever. It's a shame the rest of the world missed out, but hey, at least you can get it now. They did go to the U.S. to tour, way back in the early days, but the producers/execs over there, wanted them to change everything they did basically, to make them more 'America friendly', (I think you all would have liked 'em how they were), so they said "#@!$ *$&#!!!!", came home, and never went back, lol. I love that you loved them, nothing you listen to, will disappoint.✌❤
Yep, they came back from the US and wrote “You Got Nothing I Want” as an up you to the American recording executives. 🙂 Another brilliant song- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--BiJKq7ynms.htmlsi=ysxPNlzPQ2_x_EwO
One of my favourite Cold Chisel songs will always be Letter To Alan. Ian Moss absolutely shreds in this one. It never get radio play (it comes in at almost 6 minutes) and is an underrated gem. It was the last song on the Circus Animals album from 1982.
I’m an Aussie and got to see them in Melbourne at pubs back in the day. They were excellent!! Jimmy used to drink vodka straight from the bottle on stage. Oh those were the best times!
@@Eskay1206 OK so I just took your suggestion and checked out wild thing by cold chisel. Why in the name of all that is holy did I not hear about the band before? I am a music fanatic and I never heard of these guys. Weird things do happen I guess. What a fantastic band. Thank you for that suggestion. It was a little life-changing for the better.
@@HabsAndHeavyMetalok you have to check out “you’ve got nothing I want” by Cold Chisel they wrote that song after coming back from the US 🇺🇸as the record label gave them the stuff around while they were there. 😂 it’s a banger. You’ll love it I’m sure. That’s probably why a lot of people from the US haven’t heard of Cold Chisel unless they came over here in Australia.
Mate what a great band. Some of our favourites are Khe San Standing on the Outside Flame Trees Working class man Many more to choose from. Jimmys a good bloke who’s had a few medical issues of late but he’s still getting it done. They formed in the 70’s in South Australia and are fantastic live. I followed them on tour around Australia (they didn’t know I was ther of course 😅) although I had a beer with Jimmy in Northern Territory (best schooner ever). Don Walker was a talent who wrote many of their songs for 10 years one in particular was about a mate of his about his story in the Vietnam war. Thanks for the memories dude.
Cold Chisel, from my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia.. Jimmy grew up here (Born in Scotland).. They did their first gigs here.. Dave Blight, the harmonica player, still plays at blues bars around town. Im glad you call it harp, people look at me strange when I do haha... I play with song with my Gen X band, it goes OFF!
Cold Chisel - Start Hotel m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GWkyydslUFo.html About the closing of the Star Hotel, a popular rock venue that led to one of Australia’s largest civil disturbances. About 4000 young Australians fed up with pubs being shut in their area took on the police trying to shut the venue down. Riots in the streets, police cars burnt. Young Australians had had enough.
Your hooked lol 👍- "Cold Chisel Live 1983 Ian Moss performs Georgia on My Mind" is an absolute must, along with "Cold Chisel - Wild Thing (Last Stand)" 🎤🎸🔥
As an Aussie growing up on Cold Chisel, INXS, Midnight Oil, Rose Tatoo, Angels and ACDC its incredible that Aussie rock is still being discovered ......but Im happy you are here for it........and i almost forgot Silverchair - Frog Stomp album
Just some more news on the chisel front, they are still playing and they are doing their 50 years tour this November here in Australia. I am going and can not wait, this will be my first time seeing them and I am soooo excited. It should be one of the greatest concerts ever. The first concert here in Melbourne sold out in 1 hour, that's about 60,000 tickets!!!! Chisel is still alive and kicking in 2024!!!
@setonhillstudios it is mate, should be absolutely crazy. Poss the biggest show of the summer here, then I double up with the Dropkick Murphys in Nov as well!!!!!!!!
Love One Long Day! Rosaline, also from their debut album should get a mention as I think it’s Mossy’s best vocal performance and Just How Many Times is sublime.
Love seeing new people finding Cold Chisel. Check out Cold Chisel,Hell broke Lucy Official video. Im suggesting the Official video only because it is easier to understand the words of the song the first time.
Ian Moss was the lead singer of the band originally but wanted to step back from that position and asked the band to find another co-lead singer (as Ian also plays fantastic guitar). That's when Jimmy/ 'Barnsey' joined the band. 'Mossy' wrote this song from his own experience . Bow River is up in the tropical North of Australia. In this same concert, unplanned for and at the end of it, Mossy sings the best version of the American classic, 'Georgia' that you will ever hear ! The cameraman was so blown away by it that he made a special video of it !
So many possibilities !!! Flame Trees, When the War is Over, Saturday Night, Breakfast at Sweethearts, You Got Nothing I Want, Choir Girl, Forever Now... Pretty much any song, any album, any era will not disappoint. I suggest putting them on a big wheel and spinning it up !
20+ year old concert of a 40+ year old song. Glad you enjoyed it. Song is about a sheep station (ranch) where Ian Moss’s brother worked in outback Australia.
Bow River is Mossy’s song.. Jimmy is just a tag along… even though it’s a Cold Chisel recording. 😂😂😂❤❤❤ Mossy was lead vocal on quite a few Cold Chisel songs with Jimmy hanging back. Jimmy was the screaming rock god and Ian’s calmer vocals were the soothing balm in Cold Chisel. Ian Moss is an amazing guitarist and vocalist, Ian was a massive contribution to Cold Chisel and co-wrote a few of their songs. Tuckers Daughter is a Mossy single along with Telephone Booth and both are awesome songs!
Standing on the outside and looking in -- about busting out of classism. Star Hotel - about a riot when they stopped the Saturday night live music young people in the area lived for. But Flame Trees hits every Australian in the nostalgia feels.
@@setonhillstudiosWhen the US record company told them all the changes they needed to make to make it over there they came home and did a single called "You got nothing I want" and Jimmy wore an old football top in the video clip. 100% knew their audience.
@@setonhillstudios Saturday Night from The Last Stand is funny Ian Moss forgets the words does some ad libbing then Jimmy comes over with the lyric sheet and holds it up for Ian to read the song was only written a few days before hand so you can forgive Mossy on this one
G’Day mate, so happy you are loving some of our Aussie legends. Cold Chisel ultimate pub band. I grew up listening to these guys. Jimmy and Ian Moss absolute fire. Cheers Kev
Yes Cold Chisel were around from the mid 1970s till they disbanded circa 1983. One of my favourite "Chisel" songs come from their earliest era (1978) (?) and is called "One Long Day" (it's on RU-vid you could check it out for yourself). I attended their "Last Stand" tour in, if memory serves, 1983 (ish) They have however re-formed from time to time for certain events. This video is from one of these later events.
@@setonhillstudios One Long Day is great but what is better was when they rolled a song called Plaza into One Long Day the transition is outta this world look for Plaza/One Long Day on youtube speaking of outta this world check Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe
Welcome to Chisel! Check out When The War is Over, live. I'm in Perth, Australia and have tickets to their concert here in October. Will be my 3rd Chisel concert and I've seen Jimmy about 13 times. Legends! 🤟
@@WossaG Sorry mate, I did not pick up the inference of your comment and I am having a shitty day and vented my grumpiness towards you. Please forgive. Rock on.
Just went it seemed the new generation of young Australians had given up on good Aussie rock in favor of sanitized glitzy American commercial auto-tune stuff from the big US studios, Chisel announced an anniversary tour and it sold out in hours. there is still hope.
When I was eighteen I left home and hitchhiked to Darwin , My inspiration was this album , met many great people we got drunk, smoked heaps of shit. FXXK it was epic , now im 58 and still rockin to CC , cheers .
My choices for Chisel spotlighting Jimmy and Mossy are Wild Thing ( no effs given pure rock and roll) and Georgia as only Mossy could do it . Chisel are a good time band, stage performance , always worth a listen to, Royalty .
I saw Cold Chisel a few years ago at Bluesfest and they were amazing. I can only imagine how mind-blowing they were in their prime, blowing the roof off and tearing apart smaller venues.
@elreyabeja4539 I saw Jimmy tossing the contents of his ice bucket over the crowd at the end of the night at the Bombay Rock, The ice was used to keep the vodka bottle chilled. It was a hot, wild and loud night.
Cold Chisel is one of my FAVOURITE 70's/80's band.....Aussie Legends. They are always best listened to live, simply amazing band. Some great songs are Flame Trees, Breakfast at Sweethearts, When the War is Over, Khe San, Ita, You got Nothing I Want, Saturday Night - the list goes on. Thanks for video, loved watching you enjoy them.
This dudes enthusiasm for Chisel after a first time listen is great to witness and, with absolute respect, that mile wide southern accent is just insane. I remember doing gigs with Chisel back in the 80's. 2000+ punters packed into one of the "beer barn" venues of the day, all wringing wet with sweat, standing in a 1" lake of Beer, Bourbon and who knows what other fluids, and literally PULSATING for 2 hours to Chisel. And they were SO LOUD. *** Check out Ian Mosses solo work, especially his first album: MATCHBOOK ****
@@setonhillstudios seriously you won't be disappointed. Cold Chisel doing "Wild Thing" live from the Last Stand tour has got to be one of the best live rock performances ever. 😁
Every person in this band is a great song writer . My personal favourite is Steve Prestwich , the drummer . It's hard to argue with songs like...... Flame Trees .... When the war is over and many more .
Look up cold chisel singing Wild Thing live performance Last stand version it's when young You'll see Jimmy going off Also Ian moss guitar 🎸 work Their a true pub rock band Also blues / jazz band Look up You've got nothing I want When they went to usa and was rejected Because wouldn't conform to what the producer wanted So came home and wrote this song on plane ride home Look up Bow river Again mainly mossy as known here singing Look up Rising sun Mainly Jimmy singing this one Look up Cheap wine Look up When the war is over Always do live version of them They have 38 songs to choose from Even today still playing their music on mainstream radio channels We normally call them barnsey & mossy When Jimmy singing with john Farnham Their called farnsey & barnsey These will give you a idea of their music Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
You HAVE to react to Chisel doing Wild Thing (The Last Stand). Jimmy was a bottle of vodka (or two) deep and it is one of the best live performances you'll see. Do yourself a favour!
In high school, a mate of mine would get people into chisel, by handing them a cassette tape of barking spiders and would simply say listen to bow river. I did and I never looked back. That was 30 odd years ago, still the greatest. Check out last stands live version of wild thing, insane!!
