Exactly! This was actually performed in 1985 on the American Bandstand 33 1/3 TV Special. It was the First time that Dionne Warwick and her Longtime Lyricist Burt Bacharach performed together in 15 Years. They had an acrimonious breakup. Dionne had signed a Contract with Warner Brothers Records to have her next Seven Albums produced and written by Burt and his former Partner Hal Davis. They chose not to work with each other after their Seven Year Partnership ended 1963-1970 and she sued them so Warners wouldn't sue her. Stevie Wonder & Elton John also hold the distinction of having Albums that debuted at Number One. Songs In The Key Of Life, and Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy. Gladys Knight is know as The Empress Of Soul whose Career began in the 1950's.
Hey when i was little i woulda swore it was gladis knight and the pimps...lololol id nevet heard the word pip b4. For christ sake its my dogs name..lolol but i named him that cuzza scottie pippen im jordan out here..lolol
@@leslielees5438 When you sing with Dionne Warwick, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder, and your voice is the one that stands out? Wow. Gladys is just the best.
Growing up with songs like this - is why we don't listen the the crap that's thrown around today! Dionne Warwick Elton John Stevie wonder Gladys night ❤
I have to agree with you on your statement. It’s just such a shame that the kids today don’t really have what we had growing up. I am not sure 35+ years later they will be able to enjoy like we are 🎧❤️
Perfectly said. So very true. I am so thankful I raised my 25 yr old son on all the good music. He is so shocked at all the young people his age that don't know all this good music. I blame the parent's.
This was recorded as a fundraiser for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) and raised $3M for AIDS research and care. Huge international hit!
Originally it was recorded by Rod Stewart in 1982 for the movie NIGHT SHIFT starring Michael Keaton but it wasn't a hit until Dionne performed it later. It was also a reunion with her and her old collaborator songwriter Burt Bacharach after they had a falling out in the early 70s.
My sister had developed cancer, and everyday, I sent either a card, or a small gift to let her know I was thinking of her. One such gift was a lavishly dressed Lady Teddy Bear. When you pressed its hand, it played this very song!! ( In good times and bad times ) My sister loved it, and today, she is cancer free!! Whenever I hear this song, I tend to shed a tear for sheer happiness!! XO
Now react to each of them individually: Heartbreaker - Dionne Warwick Midnight Train To Georgia - Gladys Knight & The Pips Master Blaster (Jammin') - Stevie Wonder Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
I just found out about Heartbreaker. The Bee Gees wrote it and wanted her to record. She didn't want the song. Barry pushed her to do it and knew that it would be a hit for her. Bingo.
Dionne was much like Karen Carpenter back in the day with the type of songs she sang...she had a very good relationship with one of the best writers ever, Burt Bacharach.... Check out more of her.
There's an almost-direct link between Dionne and Karen: a song Bacharach wrote with Dionne in mind...ended up being recorded instead by Karen, who, ahem, had a little success with it. It was called "Close To You". Launched Carpenters' hitmaking career in 1970...
@@StudeSteve62 It was because of Richard Carpenter's arrangment, I guess. She had seen the spark of the song and Burt even admitted that he failed to see it. Folks say that Dionne might make it a hit way back with the arrangement.
Your reactions are priceless. It's refreshing to see someone that has not heard a singer or a song that youve known forever. Gladys Knight is the other lady. Dionne warwick they said she can sing anything. I'm glad you had her as one of your reactions. She is absolutely brilliant.
I grew up listening to the music of the 60s 70s 80s and 90s. My Dad would play all sorts of oldies in the car and around the house. It's very rare for me to like any current music cause I grew up listening to the classics.
Ms Dionne, love her stylish phrasing, voice... Big fan from Bangalore India. Lovely piano playing!!!!!. She damn looks so much like her cousin Ms.Whitney
They all toured Australia during the 70’s and 80’s - and I was privileged to see them perform live - Elton John, Gladys knight & the Pips, Dionne Warwick and my absolute hero - Stevie Wonder. 💗
I LOVE YOUR REACTION!!!!! LET ME START OVER!! WHAT a powerful real reaction to the legendary Ms. Dionne Warwick and the other three legends Stevie, Gladys, and Elton!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🙌🙌
What a great time for this song! That other lady is Gladys Knight. I suggest, "You're the best thing that ever happened to me." A classic that stands the test of time. P.S. Dionne is related to the late, great Whitney Houston.
Great reaction. 👍 I love them all. A beautiful song by a beautiful lady.. Oh her name is pronounced Dee on. She's a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. She has some great songs. And she hung in there when her jaw was causing her so much pain, and she had to have surgery. I love her clear beautiful voice.
Please check out some Fifth Dimension: Aquarius, Stone Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues...so many good songs. My M & D had several albums and I definitely had a crush on Marilyn McCoo when I was about seven, lol. Beautiful (still), but also had one of the best voices of all time.
When I lived in Vegas, I had a must-see list of performers. Dionne was on it. Saw her do a dinner show at the LV Hilton. It’ s a very small venue and intimate. Of all those on my list, her performance was at the top. No words to describe the power and beauty of that voice in such a petite woman. What a thrill to see her perform. Unforgettable!
I grew with Artist in the radio all day, everyday and in our television set and didn't have to pay cable to see then! I appreciated and valued their music then as I do now at age 70! That's What Friends Are For" is a Burt Bacharach song. Dionne Warwick is a cousin of Whitney Houston's. Houston's mother is Warwick's aunt. I love Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston and love Elton John and oh my dear Lord knows, I love Stevie Wonder!!!
This was Dionne Warwicks's last top 40 hit. It went to #1 on the Billboard Singles Chart. She had hits in the 60's and the 70's and by the 80's, she became the oldest female singer to hit the top 40 at that time. Some of her other hits are - Deja Vu, No Night So Long, Heartbreaker, Do You Know The Way To San Jose and others. She also had a #1 hit in the early 70's with the Spinners on a song called Then Came You. She is one of the great female voices in music history.
That's What Friends Are For" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. It was first recorded in 1982 by Rod Stewart for the soundtrack of the film Night Shift, but it is better known for the 1985 cover version by Dionne Warwick,[1] Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder. This recording, billed as being by "Dionne Warwick & Friends", was released as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention. It was a massive hit, becoming the number-one single of 1986 in the United States, and winning the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Song of the Year. It raised more than $3 million for its cause….👍🏻😁🏴
Dionne Warwick is Whitney Huston cousin. Stevie Wonder on harmonica and the great Gladys Knight. This was huge when it first came out. Dionne ( pronounced Dee on) was huge in her own right and was probably the best interpreter of Burt Bacarach/Hal David songs along with the Carpenters. Try Walk on by or Do you know the way the San Jose for Dionne and Midnight Train the Georgia for Gladys Knight and the Pips
I was 12 when this song came out. One of my favorite songs of all time. Gives me chills every time. And the original "We Are the World" is another good one! With the Dionne and Stevie and more legends.
Thank you so very much for playing this song with Dionne Warwick and her friends, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder singing along. You're so right. They each sounded fantastic. God bless them all, including yourself Amigo. Adios.
So much talent there.....Elton John, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder and, alas, beloved Dionne Warwick (that's Dee-on) who we lost. I am so happy you enjoyed the voices that formed our lives. Welcome aboard!
When I was young my parents had a car with an 8-track player and the two tapes we had were a Dionne Warwick's Greatest Hits and a Ray Charles compilation!
The greatness of music that we had being born in ‘77 and growing up a kid in the ‘80’s will always be something I wouldn’t trade for anything. It had a tremendous hand in developing a generation of people who lived with heart, faith, hope and strength. We became romantics and visionary’s all because of the depth and heart within the music of our generation. As well as the generation before us. Nearly all of the greatest music ever produced came roughly from about ‘60 to 1995. I for one will always be grateful, although it also has me wishing I could go back to the 80’s.
Another beautiful song that I have forgotten, and I have to thank you again Jayvee for the memories that hit me as I listen to this. Dionne's voice is so beautiful and so too are the others and together they are perfect. I love your reactions to this and I am stunned that I forgot this, sometimes I dislike my memory lol, the doctors say it's the meds I take, better to think that than think it's my age lol. Bless you for sharing such wonderful records with us air sweetheart. Take care and stay safe please my friends, love and hugs to you all Mary-Ellen UK
The harmonica was Steve Wonder's trademark in the beginning. When he was 13 they released "Fingertips, Part II". He was introduced as little Stevie Wonder. This was in the 1960s.
This is just an amazing collaboration! And when Gladys Knight cuts loose and them veins are stickin' out of her neck? My GOD what a powerful voice! I've played harmonica for 57 years and I play well, but I'd still KILL to have Stevie's talent! ☺☻
Yes. little treasures like this all star cast, really bring joy to your heart.Dionne Warwick(pronounced Deeonn), Elton John, Gladys Knight & Stevie Wonder.
Your reaction to this is priceless. This song is beautiful. And why Dionne Warwick look like that Aunt at the cookout who wears her sunglasses on her head after the sun goes in
Jay my freind there is a wealth of music like that ' as you say its real music real singers 'keep going bud''you are only at the beginning''l was a teenager in the 80s that was my learning curve'' there is a Treasure still to hear''all the best my friend...😎❤🎷🎸🎙🎧🍺🍺🍺🍺
Love your reaction!! I assumed you knew Stevie and Gladys....a joy to see you light up as you discovered them. Listen to Gladys Knight and the Pips, “Neither One of Us.” Their vocals are amazing. And there is no one like or better than Dionne.
I was a young teen when this AIDS benefit happened, and I was happy about the cause, but I thought the song was ... I dunno ... fake? Cheesy? I dunno, but I was dumb. Because I was too young and dumb to realize that they had poured their hearts out with each other for something important. Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, John Elton, Dionne Warwick. So so so good. Thanks for helping me rediscover it!! ♥️♥️
Stevie Wonder!! I left a comment about one of the greatest artists of all time! Not even one reply! Stevie Wonder! What kind of people don’t know who Stevie Wonder is?
Try also to make a reactions of her hit songs below: Heartbreaker (1982) I’ll Never Love This Way Again (1979) Her 1960’s hit songs medley (I Say a Little Prayer, Do You Know The Way to San Jose, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, & Don’t Make Me Over)
