I'm from Los Angeles. One day when I was probably 13 years old I was buying some candy at our local market and while I was standing in line waiting for my turn I looked at the person who was a couple of people ahead of me purchasing something when I realized it was Satchmo. I was all Starstruck and couldn't believe that he was at our local market. I didn't say anything to him I just stood there with my jaw dropped in awe.

Louis invented modern singing, and all singers since owe a huge debt to him they don't even know. But his influence on music -- not just jazz -- was even greater. He is by far the most influential American musician of all time, and maybe the most influential since Bach and Beethoven.
@JimiBurleigh
@JimiBurleigh 3 года назад
@@markhardwicke5345 Just a quick note to say I agree with your assessment. As I wrote (above) that Satchmo is the most important American musician who has ever lived. And I'd argue that he was definitely as influential is any of "the long hairs" (Bach, Beethoven, etc.)

Louis Armstrong, aka Satchmo or Pops, is considered by most music historians as the inventor of modern music. His voice is unique and awesome, but it was his trumpet playing that changed everything. Love him!

Where does the nickname "Satchmo" come from?

@@debbowen2011 I thought about being snarky and saying, "There's this thing called Google," but I'll tell you anyway: Armstrong had a large mouth and was called "Satchel Mouth," but when he toured England the people misheard the nickname and started calling him Satchmo, and it stuck. 😁
