He is an absolute legend. Try "Golden Ring" (with Tammy Wynette), "Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes," "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair," or "The Grand Tour."
Opening line is "He said I will love you until I die".... and yet so many people completely miss that line and don't realize that the song is about a guy who kept his promise. He loved her until he died, despite being lonely, heart-broken, and literally miserable for the rest of his life. He simply couldn't give his heart to someone else.
George Jones did not want to record this song. He said it was morbid and no one would want to listen to this song. It now is recognized as the greatest country song ever recorded.
3:09 When MrLboyd gets it! Love it! Yep, saddest song ever. This time he's over her for good. DAMN!!! Gets you right in the ol' gut. For a different perspective, check out Alan Jackson's version of this song performed at George Jones' funeral 20 feet away from the casket.
The first line says "He said I'll love you till I die" and that's exactly what he did. I'm so glad you understood that. I am amazed at the people who react to this song and think he stopped loving her because he finally gave up on her and moved on. That sort of interpretation sort of makes the song just another song. When it is interpreted correctly it becomes one of the greatest country music songs ever recorded.
George truly loved Tammy until the end. When they divorced and had an estate sale I went. The wrought iron gates to the entrance of my farm were the ones they had at their estate. Needless to say, I hear a GG song every time that I enter. Lol. After the divorce, George lived in a single-wide trailer across the street from my commercial building. Our friend, Peanut, owned a bar there on Nashville’s west side and the trailer was in the parking lot. I would pull into work and wave to George every morning at 7:45 as I arrived. He would be outside drinking coffee and reading the paper.
This is often referred to as the greatest country song ever. A bold statement but when it comes to true country music, it’s hard to deny. Two other greats of his are “Choices” and “Who’s gonna fill their shoes” a song he put out when country music started going pop.
@@Amaberean The Country Music Association polled its members about twenty years ago. The third place song was "Crazy" by Patsy Cline at number two was this song and at Number One was Tammy's "Stand by Your Man" so I would suggest you might want to re-access your comment.
The next George Jones you do should absolutely be his duet with Tammy Wynette (one of his four wives lol) “Golden Ring”. One of the best duets in Country Music.
That was AWESOME. You were all smiles when you heard that "he didn't see no tears, all dressed up to go away, first time I've seen him smile in years", and even when "they placed a wreath upon his door", it hadn't yet registered, but once "soon they'll carry him away", your face told that you SUDDENLY realized that yeah, he's dead.
This is the best why George is a Legend. In county music a quality sad song is called a Jonesy. By the way, he lost a $1 bet on this song. He swore it would be a flop and it turned out to be a mega hit.
this song was voted song of the year, then song of the decade, then song of the century and finally best country song of all time. this song is very rarely covered because it is so iconic. alan jackson sang it at george's funeral. if you want to watch a tear jerker, vince gill sings go rest high on that mountain at george's funeral and there is not a dry eye in the place
This is the greatest country song ever recorded!! George Jones had a super voice.Seen him in concert and loved every minute of it! Try it’s a Good Day for the Roses, it’s another great song as only he could do it!!!!
Fun fact He stopped Loving her today by George Jones I'm So lonesome I could cry by Hank Williams It has been argued for years which one is the greatest country song ever. In the '90s, they interviewed and asked almost every act of country music singer, what is the greatest country song ever. 95% of them listed one of those two songs
George Jones is a master of getting you to feel emotion. For something still emotional that doesn't make you want to cry try Walk through this world with me. For something to make you chuckle afterwards go for the Corvette Song!
I love your reaction. You got it very rigth. "I love you til i die" and as he died he sopped loving her. So many reactors dont get it. One have just listen to the lyrics well. You did it!
George was around a LONG time and had many hits. They range from the sad HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY to the lighthearted THE CORVETTE SONG to the nostalgic WHO’s GONNA FILL THEIR SHOES to one of his earliest hits WHITE LIGHTENING , a song about moonshine.
Ah, yes! His version of White Lightnin is great. He should listen to that as well as the Big Bopper's version of the song. A fun song done in two rather different styles.
The juxtaposition of the beautiful melody, instruments, and singing against the heartbreaking message of the song makes these old country songs great. The old possum was one of the greats.
Probably the most iconic song in country music, by the most iconic singer in country music. I always love seeing a first time reaction to this song, at the moment when they get the true meaning. Thanks for this reaction.
George is a Legend... no doubt... I'm not sure when this was done but he was older then when he originally recorded it... I love this song so much and have since it came out in the 80's. Thank you for reacting
Some George Jones songs I recommend are Rockin’ Chair, The Grand Tour, Why Baby Why, The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song), Finally Friday, and The Cold Hard Truth.
Such a classic!! I was a young kid when my Uncle was going through a divorce. He would sit in his game room/bar with his juke box playing this song. He was so sad. It wasn't until later that I understood the meaning. I get the chills hearing it today.
Great job listening and analyzing this song. It's surprising how many reactors don't get it that he passed although there are several clues, but the intro "he said I'll love you 'til I die" sets it up for later where "he stopped loving her today" closes his life. Add the wreath upon his door; they'll carry him away. Thanks!!
You are one of the very very few reactors who got the meaning! With mourning and funeral customs changing over the years, many miss it and think he's moving on... One of the saddest songs in Country music, one of the first Country songs I heard, and definitely one of the songs that got me immediately hooked on Country music and it's storytelling... Amazing reaction! 💗
One of the most beautiful yet sad country songs ever. Songs like this are the core of country music. Yes, he has an amazing voice. If you haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes. It's a beautiful song that asks a real question that applies not only to country music, but to other things as well. Who among the upcoming generations will become the pillars of the community? Who will have the courage to lead the way? Who will keep the traditions alive?
Mr. George Jones was a real case. Often failing to appear at his own concerts in his later years, he was sometimes called "No-Show" Jones. His main moniker was "The Possum". What's certain about him is that he possessed perhaps the most beautiful male singing voice in the entire history of country music. He was a living, breathing, hard-drinking legend in his own time, and anyone who ever heard him sing became a lifetime fan & admirer. About the song, you got the idea right away, and that's not something everyone can so easily do. I liked & subscribed, entirely because you spoke of Mr. Jones and his song with great respect & humility & intellect, and now I'm a fan of yours. Thanks. I was going to recommend another of his songs, and so I'll suggest you give a shot at "The Grand Tour".
When GJ sang this song and most people hadn't heard it yet, he would spring the surprise on the audience by holding the "carry him away" (included only once) to near the end of the song, followed by a wailed-sung "he stopped loving her today." on an emphatic descending melody. It was very effective in providing shock.
i love George Jones! I was thinking about Whose going to fill their Shoes just yesterday. It was a song about the old country singers and who would replace them. And I thought who the heck is going to fill your shoes. I don't know.
After my husband died in 1979, my brother called me crying and said listen to this song. Still to this day, it reminds me of my husband. It still hurts.
I am happy to see other folks recognizing the beauty of the classics. The songs that the legends dang told stories. The music is meant to be emotional.
I've noticed through your reactions, Mr Boyd, just how much you truly love the classic country. Like genuinely. And I get it. I'm a hip hop head through and through. But there is something about the sound, the emotion conveyed through the voices, the simple instrumentals, and the stories told - that CAPTIVATE. Great reaction. Can't wait to see more.
George Jones was married to Tammy Wynette for years and they had a daughter but he drank so badly and they fussed and fought like cats and dogs but they truly loved each other. And had so many great songs together and apart. One of the best duets ever together, but they just couldn't stay together as many and wife. Thank you for playing it. I love that song.
George Jones's friend and country superstar Alan Jackson sang this at George's funeral celebration at the Grand Old Opry. Garth Brooks was the first to stand and put his hat over his heart. It was one of those moments. George had a lifelong battle with alcohol that seriously damaged his career. His nickname was The Possum. You'll hear that in the duet of Alan Jackson and George Strait when they sing 'Murder on Music Row' - a brilliant song about how the country music industry was changed by commercialism.
You’re amazing! I’ve watched other reactors react to this song and nobody gets it. You’re the first one I’ve watched that immediately got the premise of this song. Just like you did when you heard Elvis, If I Can Dream.
Glad you caught that, not everyone does. Great reaction. Heard that Johnny Cash was asked who is the best country music singer and he replies, "You mean besides George Jones?" His song Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes pays tribute to many country legends
My favorite George Jones song. I was lucky enough to see him once....with John Anderson ( during his "Swingin' Days) and George Strait. It was a great concert and we did have to wait a few min for him to come out on stage like was his habit at the time. But it was worth it.
What I love about this song is that the very first line is a setup for the entire song. And for the chorus. Personal opinion this is an absolute Masterpiece of lyrical manipulation.
Waylon Jennings wrote a lyric in his song that spoke to everyone in historic country music’s world and beyond belief that George Jones was the greatest phraser and male vocalist in the business. He was Dolly Parton’s favorite singer. Waylon’s lyric is: George might show up flyin' high, if George shows up at all But he may be, unconsciously, the greatest of them all From the Beatles and me in Nashville, to the billies and the Rolling Stones If we all sounded like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones. George’s producer Billy Sherrill was not a fan of Jones because he’d have a heck of a time getting him to record regularly due to his rampant alcoholism. He said they could not get him to finish the song but I guess they finally hounded him enough to get him in the studio. When he finished his vocals he looked at Billy and said “now you’ve got your gd song, now see if anybody will listen to the morbid SOB.” It became his biggest hit and signature song.
