You should totally watch the hit movie "Straight Outta Compton". It explains a lot about their story, including this song. FYI, the beat in this song is sampled from a band called "Brick". The song is called "Dazz" (Disco Jazz).
This song wasn't released as a single so there is no official video. MTV wouldn't play this on air considering the content. But we played this at every house party in college. As far as their beef, you know how it is with groups when they break up. All kinds of blame got thrown around. But, when EZ got sick, he and Cube made amends.
He left over not being paid his due, he wss being smart about the business... Then they dissed him cause his 1st album sold, they got in their feelings, so he clapped back. Then Dre left and Eazy and Dre started dissing each other on songs. They did peace it out before Eazy death and was gonna get back together but the death stopped that reunion.
Ice cube wrote the rhymes but wasnt gettin paid. He did the right thing, left the group and started his own label. Him and dre linked up later on a track called natural born killers. Title of a popular movie at the time.
NWA - Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, Easy-E, DJ Yella. For a period of time, they also had - The D.O.C. and Arabian Prince. This video is not an official music video. Someone put great images to the track and released it.
Basically-- Ice Cube is a smart guy... he realized Easy-E and their producer Heller were fucking them... through out their tour, Cube asked about gettin paid and when the contract would be done... they tried to drag it as long as they could... Cube gave his girlfriend his contract to look over and she told him if he signed it they would own him... so he left the crew to go solo... he just let go... in NWA's second album 100 miles and running... they made the mistake of referencing Ice Cube as a traitor for walking away... Hence the song no vasoline... Dr Dre left the group a few years later which start a whole other beef...
Quick explanation. NWA was being managed by a guy named Jerry Heller. He screwed them out of money and Cube was paying attention and didn’t want to sign after righting all the lyrics. Cube left and went solo and started Lynch mob. NWA wrote a diss track on Ice Cube. This was his response.
The Jewish guy Jerry Heller, was NWA manager . Ice cube found out Jerry and Eazy was ripping off the group, also cube was doing a lot more writing and wasn't getting paid correctly for it. So he told the group, they didn't believe him, so he left the group, they considered him a Trader and dissed cube. So Cube came back with No Vaseline.
It was Jerry Heller who wrote up dodgy contracts and the group couldn't have lawyers present which Ice Cube turned around and told Jerry to stick it and was the only one who didn't sign unless his lawyers were present. Only Eazy-E was getting paid handsomely at the time while Dre, Yella, and Ren were getting peanuts
I was a huge Ice Cube fan in the 80's & 90's. Easy E wasn't paying the members what they were worth. Ice Cube wouldn't sign Easy's contract, Ice Cube went sole. Ice Cube left NWA, he did not dis them at all. NWA came out with a dis-track about Ice Cube, then No Vaseline was born!
Even white Jews like me can appreciate the savagery of this song. Cube you still good w me 😂 The two other “great moments in savage hip hop diss history” that compare to No Vaseline are (1) Tupac’s Hit ‘Em Up and (2) the Nas - JayZ beef with Takeover and Ether Side step but you gotta go Wu Tang asap. Greatest hip hop of all time.
I should apologize for recommending this song but your reaction was soo worth it. Especially when you ripped off your headphones. And you said something like all of NWA are getting their behinds took. haha. I'm sure my jaw was dropped the first time I heard it too. Still super harsh all these years later. It's just one of those songs you have to hear at least once.
Eazy was part of the group essentially because he had money from dealing drugs so he had the means to get the records produced. Eazy & Heller owned Ruthless Records, so Eazy benefited from the horrible contracts they were under with Heller as their manager. It took awhile for the others to realize they were getting screwed, and Cube was the 1st to decide he wasn’t going to stand for it any longer.
Pac is actually from NY as crazy as that sounds in retrospect but yea this was the beginning of Gangster Rap it was ground breaking and definitely mad the entire world stand at attention. The president and government was against them and they were literally burning their albums and stuff in the streets all across the country. They changed music forever. You should watch the NWA movie if you hadn’t seen it by now
Only watched the first few seconds and facts I just heard this song for the first time a few weeks ago and it was my first time ever hearing a solo ice cube song ever lol
In my opinion this is the greatest diss track ever.. #2. Hit em up. Tupac's diss to biggie and puff Greatest female diss Remy ma -sheather Dress in black for this react cuz she murdered Nikki Minaj on that track ...7 minutes of fire
I know you are young but you are killing my heart. Not to know this makes me feel old. haha Don't know REN????? My heart is stopping. And he had to go hard. They could not come back from this
You gotta watch the movie straight out of compton and when you understand the story the lyrics in this songs makes a lot of sense. He didnt waste any words with fillers. Pretty much has to do with Jerry the producer and Eazy as the manager of NWA and how those two screwed the rest of the group in terms of money and contracts
Ice cube wasn't taking no lil azz 75k. For all the work he was doing.. he bounced seemingly cool wit the guys ..the dissed him, and HE COOKED THEM!! end of story 🤷🏿♂️
You should check out the Hollywood movie from 2015 about NWA called "Straight Outta' Compton". Great movie....but bear in mind, it's mostly from Ice Cube's perspective. Also, Ice Cube's son plays his dad in the movie.
Youngin it's too much to explain the history of this group in a comment section. This was 30 years ago. Just go watch the NWA movie" Straight Outta Compton" and listen to the all the diss trackz from Ice Cube, Eazy E, Dre & Snoop. NWA dissed Ice Cube first, so Cube responded... Lets just say, NWA didn't want that smoke. They didn't diss him any further.
when you realize that this is the stuff Eminem came up on, he doesnt seem as contraversial...and its why the Old Heads keep saying this generation is soft
Please find some time baby boy and react to STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON. I STARTED WORKING AS A LOCAL STAGEHAND IN 87 when I was 17 years old and believe me 35+ working in the industry I know And it was jumping
This song was a response song to Eazy-E "Mutha Fuckin G's" that was dissing Ice Cube... Lets just say Cube won the beef cuz there was no more battle songs after this... Watch Straight Outta Compton...it tells the whole story of how the group formed and broke up and the beef that ensued.
Other Ice Cube Classics: The Wrong N* to F* Wit Steady Mobbin Wicked It Was A Good Day Check Yo Self Bop Gun You Know How We Do It Ren was MC Ren, another member of NWA. This is one of the hardest dis-tracks ever. Often debated with PAC’s Hit Em’ Up. They split over money and contract disputes. Eazy E made Jerry Heller the manger without checking with the group. Eazy E and Jerry were behind Ruthless Records, the label NWA was signed too. They were not fairly paying the artists.
Feels like you missed a lot of it by not watching the lyrics. Basically Cube broke off because he saw NWA's manager was taking advantage of them. NWA made a diss at Cube saying he was benedict arnold for leaving the group and this was his comeback pointing out how soft NWA became and how they were getting f'd over by their manager.
Watch the NWA Movie, Straight Outta Compton. Ice Cube was upset he wasn't being paid his worth. He wrote a majority of their songs. Their manager was swindling them, but took care of Eazy E. Ice Cube left because of it. He went to New York to record his debut album and this was the breakout song.
Here's the scoop. Ice Cube was first to leave, tired of their manager not giving them the proper pay. Eazy E thought the manager was tight, because he himself was treated somewhat better. So when Ice Cube left, they made a diss song on him. I was really into them at the time, and I have to say after Ice Cube responded, I have to look up whatever that diss was because Ice Cube beat them all down so bad it wasn't even close. The manager wanted to sue, wanted some kind of something to get back at him but the rest of the guys were like... naw, he might make another one.
Check out "steady mobbin" to me, it's more in tune with Ice Cube's flavor at the time. There was a definite change once he left NWA IMO! Different focus!
Yeah Cube went with East Coast beats in AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted by getting Bomb Squad to produce the album. Then Death Certificate was really political, something I could never imagine coming out of NWA. As amazing as Cube was in the group, I'm so glad he went solo so he wasn't making the same album every time like he would have probably done in NWA.
OK, the difference between ice cube and NWA started when they were group and Jerry. Howard was the manager the white guy Jewish manager and he was taking money and he was making Dane that went good for me and every time I wanted it is money we say you didn’t sign your contract so you can get the money and it was a lot less than he deserved you know so he was on Hell Side and everything and that’s why ice cube crazy he was being cheated out of money and this song came out of NWA when ice cream made America’s most funny. He mentioned it in his album but NWA did mention him in their next album and they called him Benedict and he came up straight out the movie. I’ll tell you a lot.
They fell out over money and a terrible record contract, Cube was the first to notice and smarten up. He wanted everybody to leave but Eazy wasn’t with it even tho he found out the hard way later. Watch the NWA movie man
Dawg if you want to become knowledgeable in HipHop/Rap you should listen to late 80's and 90's hip hop and rap. Watch the movie Straight outa Comptom (uncut)
RU-vid sucks! I just had this all typed out until the video tried to change. O.K. So, Cube left because he thought he was getting screwed but in reality, he didn't understand how all of this works. When you're signed to a label things work differently than you would think. Before the artist gets paid, all costs have to be recovered. Anything the label does for you has to be paid in full. This includes any advances, recording, mixing, mastering, marketing, replication, artwork, merchandise, touring, security, lodging, and dining expenses. Then there's the label's percentage, the managers' percentage which is usually 20% standard and then the artist gets paid. Everything is done on a point system based on who contributed what. So let's say Cube wrote on x songs, he would be given x points. He only performed on x songs, so he would only get x points for those songs. The fact that he got what he did as his first royalty check is actually huge. Then you have licensing, publishing, etc. That would go to Eazy since it was his label. However, what Cube never mentions is they still get royalties to this day for that album. So it all comes down to, he really just didn't know how the business works.
Money is why. Ez set himself up. Cube got dogged after writing most of the lyrics for NWA. EZ Jail - then death. (aids) Dre & Cube are friends now. No idea bout Ren. (Known as an OG rapper.
Ice cube left cuz eazy e n Jerry heller the manager were stealing money from the others. Do ice cube left n started his own shit. Nwa made a diss track called Benedict Arnold calling cube a traitor. Do clip hit back 100x harder with No Vaseline
Cube knew the record labels were screwing them over. He didn't want to get the typical Jewish music executives rich. He stood his ground. He was right.
