Yep.. the live on stage performance at the Tony Awards is still the best. Imagine she did this performance about 8 times a.week for a few seasons back in the 1982. The play won 6 Tony Awards.

Yep, Jennifer Holliday this is the original "Effie" from the broadway show version of Dream Girls. She won a Tony for that performance, which was Awesome! You should check out the live performance she did at the Tony's for this song...mind blowing Years later Jennifer Hudson reprised that same role in the movie version. The two Jennifers performed that song together at 2007 BET Awards show, it gave me chills it was so good!😊

To watch it in the confines of the actual story/ stage show is even more powerful because of the story/ scene that this song represents. J-Hud did the song justice, but she didn't do what Holiday did with it. Jennifer Holiday killed it, and it still stands today!

That's back when black women could SANG.... I've said before that nobody sings pain like black women. Nobody in the history of humanity can do that. I heard that song growing up constantly. There's gospel, blues and rock in that performance, too. The history of our people is in that performance. That song is the essence of FBA soul.

greatest song ever written and she owns this song until the day she dies....the funniest part is the musical score was written by a white guy haha. But music is music and it transcends race and age and class and everything. Nobody will ever touch her on this song. Jennifer Hudson was good if you never heard Jennifer Holliday. Even Whitney couldn't sing this song like Holliday. This is just her masterpiece. Also, credit needs to go to the band in this recording too...the fucking pit band/orchestra was god damn fantastic and people don't think about the subtlety of how the band provided so much energy to the song when needed (the keyboard slides, the fucking nasty groove it breaks down into) but also added so much flavor in the slower more soft parts with beautiful string lines. The bass player is god damn fantastic too and is a huge part of why this recording is so fucking awesome. But at the end of the day it is that Jennifer Holliday owns this song and after she sang it nobody can sing it anymore because there is no way to put more sheer power and emotion and mastery into it than her....and even her live theater recordings where she has to act and move around and worry about the right facial emotions and stand, sit, walk, etc which make it harder to focus on singing....she still owns this more than anybody ever would after that or ever will. She was the right person at the right time for this song and god fucking damn her voice is untouchable. She has the pipes but she can also get dirty and growl a bit....and that cough at the end is the icing on the cake because it is so perfect and fits what the story is trying to tell. Jennifer Holliday is a god damn bad ass legend and I've been listening to this song for a decade and a half and it is still one of the greatest pop songs of all time.

As I see Ashley tear up, I want to do the same. There is no way today's music should be so watered-down. Not all, because there are some talent around, but the majority is.. I come from an era where it's just one person and one mic or a true live band. Talent at its best, NO autotune, fireworks, or 100 dancers... Music was intended to be real, emotional, and unforgettable....

This is why OG’s have pointed comments about new “singers” it’s not “hate”…. it’s experience. Knowing that Ms. Holiday ripped this LIVE (nightly) on broadway puts a lot in perspective.. So someone can sing every note on the scale.. Yippie! Do they know (why) the notes are being sung? Ms.Holiday does.. Chaka does, Whitney, Teena, Aretha, Gladys, Patti… And MANY more. If you seen the movie, the scene wit Jennifer Hudson is based off of the off of Jennifer Holiday’s version in from the original Dreamgirls musical. By the way, both Jennifer Holiday has slimmed down quite a bit. Saw her in the role of Shug Avery in the Color Purple musical.🎶

This is actually lip synced cause I think it was supposed to be a music video. HOWEVER, this is the studio version and she did this in ONE TAKE! The sound engineer actually told her to sing it again cause he didn't have the sound levels right and she said "Baby I only sing this song ONCE" and left the studio 🤣 QUEEN! Don't fret though, she's sung this song LIVE many times and there are many performances however the Legendary and Iconic classic performance is at the 1982 Tony Awards where she won a Tony that night!

This is the correct version to do a reaction to as this is the version most people have heard, the version people sing and the one that got radio play. The live version is fantastic but this is the more popular one that everyone knows all the riffs and inflections to.
