Joe Walsh ... underrated guitar player?? WTF?! Underrated is the most overused word in reaction video comments. And probably the most incorrectly used word as well. Most people actually mean underappreciated. I can't figure out what the hell you mean though. Because he's neither one of those things.
His arrangements and his production are always really involved in the songs too. I often wonder if he was influenced toward that by his brother-in-law, as the Beatles also made really good use of both. In this, the choice to use that 8 or 16-bit mic--at a distance--was a genius way to illustrate the differences he was trying to illustrate between his 'real life' and 'business.'
Hearing that song for the first time is like being a kid opening the best present ever on Christmas morning. Hearing it for the hundredth time or seeing someone else discover it and really appreciate this new song they've just discovered is almost as good.
Age 21, working, my own apartment ... new Camaro, windows down, Rocky Mountain Way blasting ... life was spec tac u lar!! The album was called "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get". PS...I'm 70 and this is still on my list of "BEST"!
He's talking about life in the music business. He was literally out near the mountains taking a break, living life, and he was thinking "well this is pretty good. Definitely better than dealing with the business and all that in our work life." Great reaction as always!
No he had moved to Colorado after deciding to leave The James Gang, the track was already done without lyrics, he was mowing his new yard in Colorado and looked up at the Rocky Mountains with snow on them in the summer, he was so captivated by the beauty of them and the lyrics came to him, he jumped off his lawn mower to run inside to write them down, the mower kept going destroying his neighbors garden which Joe paid to replace. Expensive song to write but it of course paid off very soon!
This guy is a HoF for not only the Eagles, but should be for his amazing solo career and his first band, hard rocking pioneers, the James Gang. For me, what you reacted to is one of his very best. That whole album is fire, try Meadows from it, Joe could do it all. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🎤
Damn. You are so right. And Joe was such a gracious man, he let his backing players have their own songs on HIS solo album. Joe Vitale had an amazing song on this album called "Days Gone By" from Joe Vitale, and Kenny Passerelli on another tune. Joe has no ego. He just loves good music, and wants to let anyone put good stuff out there. And, yes, Joe did all the guitar parts because...well...why would you need another guitar player??? And I have to say, "Days Gone By" is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.
Yes, Joe was playing. He is an incredible musician and a member of the Eagles. He is one of the two who play the guitar solo in Hotel California. He had a reputation of being a bit crazy...I love Joe Walsh!
Rocky mountain way is just lyrics for the song.they have to name these riffs something. Original title for Beatles yesterday was scrambled eggs.they just for the most part have to fill in words for the music.❤
Walsh has a very distinct voice even without the guitar talk box. But he is one of the guitar gods of rock and roll. I think Walsh called this a "blues shuffle."
This song has become more legendary as time goes by. The favorite by far for “garage bands” who gather together to jam out. Even if you don’t know the chords, it’s so easy to pick up and learn quickly. That’s the magic of this song. It’s Walsh’s Magnum Opus in all it’s simplicity. I never get tired of listening or playing it!
You'll definitely want to react to Funk #49 if you haven't already. Also, Life of Illusion and Down on the Farm. That's definitely Joe Walsh on guitar and talk box... he's a helluva guitar player. Asia, when you get that smile on your face, when you're liking a song, I can't help but smile, no matter what mood I'm in. You've got an absolutely amazing smile (said respectfully from a man old enough to be your father). Rock on you two!
Yes, that's definitely Joe Walsh playing guitar. His remarkable vocal style and guitar ability were what later secured him a job with Eagles -- a role in which he continues to this day.
Wife here..,WOW..I've always LOVED this Rock Classic..,The Instrumentation is Everything...Soooo Glad I got to see him with the Eagles in 96.."He'll Freezes Over" Tour.., I've honestly never really knew..,What the Rocky Moutain Way is/was.."The Only way to Go"..is 👍Great You Guys!!!🥰
That's the Blues in 4 Kids ... blasting out on my 74" Shovelhead Chopper Exit 131 Midnight they opened up the Garden State Parkway to motorcycles in the Mid 70's ... Thanks Jersey Joe Peace to A & B
That’s Joe playing guitar! He is one of the best!!! Watch him live with any band he plays as in, the eagles, his band, James Gang!! Awesome! One of my favorites!
Ahh the 70's. Screaming through mountain roads in my Datsun B210, this song blaring thru my Jensen Tri-axial speakers. Smoke rolling out the windows. You need to hear "Turn to Stone" by Joe Walsh. That's his best.
I've heard; "out to pasture, think it's safe to say, time to open fire"; -----, We are far enough away from people, time to light up" I've lived all over the country from coast to coast, Colorado brings back the best memories. Joe lived in Boulder, Co for a while (his young daughter was killed in a bus accident there). He was mowing his lawn one day and looked up at the front range of mountains and the lyrics came to him at that moment. I'd move back there in a second.
The name of the album this comes from is “The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get”…. So, yeah, you can figure it out… 😂. This song is from 1973 but it still sounds so good… ( a lot better now than it did on my old 8-track player)… according to song notes, Joe layered 6-7 guitars to get that sound. And yes, that’s him on the slide guitar and talk box.
"And we don't need the ladies cryin' cause the stories sad", my favorite line. This is a great party song, my high school boyfriend absolutely loved this song! I knew BJ would get into this one.
The best reaction I've ever seen for the most underrated guitarist !!!! All class and I've been around for 73 years ( and still grooving !!) ( I know when it is a good one when BJ reacts like that ) All kudos to you !!!!!
This guy is the goat of guitar players. "Bad boy guitar players." Boy you nailed it. Joe Walsh's escapades are legendary. He has a life story that most would blush to. Except maybe Keith Richards.
Walsh has some tunes that are just fire. I saw many of them mentioned the only one I didn't was "Turn to Stone" which is just a fantastic song that really rocks. It was on one of his solo albums(not with The James Gang).
Boy! this song brings back a wave of memories of my childhood. Joe Walsh is an amazing performer that has always been very underrated. The other singer you was asking about is George Thorogood, I saw him open up for Steve Ray Vaughn.
I saw The Eagles in concert in 2018 at The Forum in Los Angeles. Joe Walsh has been a guitar player for The Eagles for some time. He performed at this concert. He still has it. Great player.
Rocky Mountain Way was written about his time he spent in Colorado next to the Rocky Mountains. He had moved there from where he had lived before and thought Rocky Mountains were beautiful, that is all. Joe, one of the very best guitar players that you will run across!
This song was conceived, written and recorded when Joe Walsh was living in Colorado. It was recorded at the Caribou Ranch, which was a recording studio outside of Boulder built by Jim Guercio, manager of the band Chicago. That band recorded five albums there, and many other bands recorded there too, from Elton John to The Beach Boys.
Joe Walsh said this song pretty much wrote itself; he had left James Gang and was on his own about a year and living in Colorado. He was mowing the lawn and looked up at the Front Range (mountains) and was blown away seeing they still were covered in snow in the summertime. He pushed aside thoughts of the groupies bemoaning his departure from James Gang, the rest is euphemistic how things are better now (in '73). My favorite song of Joe's from James Gang is THE BOMBER as recorded on the album James Gang Rides Again. ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY is among his greatest solo works, and I'll suggest IN THE CITY, as well as ALL NIGHT LONG from Live You Tube recordings.
Great song from 1973, I was 12 and starting junior high school, our bus driver would always have the radio playing on our favorite rock station and this song was almost playing everyday, either going to school or coming home from school. Joe Walsh is a legendary guitarist, just love his music, thanks for this awesome reaction!
The RockyMountain Way is in reference too the Caribou Ranch, high in the mountains above Boulder Colorado, a studio and retreat for all the top artists and who's who in music A hippy music commune of the 70's Check out the (Caribou Ranch Studios Colorado Music Experience) video
It was his first hit after leaving the James Gang. Mowing his lawn in Boulder Co, and was inspired. The recording band was three guys, so yes he did the guitar work.
In the late eighties Joe Walsh deejayed at the local radio station here in New Mexico for a week and on friday played a concert in Santa Fe. Joe was rocky mountain high as a kite but still ripped it. Rocky Mountain way was the encore and us rocky mountain peeps ate it up. Awesome show.
Welcome to the Joe Walsh Fan Club! 1. James Gang 2. Eagles (in your Hotel California reaction, Joe had the red bandana on) 3. Joe Walsh Songwriter, Producer, Master Guitarist…and it continues.
After leaving his group the James Gang at the end of 1971, Joe Walsh moved from Cleveland to Boulder, Colorado, where he wrote this song, which celebrates the scenery and lifestyle of Colorado.
"Rocky mountain way" is a the way of life for those guys. Colorado..Telluride,Durango..Silverton..They dive off mountains, hike to heights people only see in pictures.. ski over mountains and out of helicopters Old saying from 60s 70s
Got to see Mr. Joe Walsh a couple of times, and the other gentleman you were trying to reference, Mr. GEORGE Thorogood one time, and they are similar. Both like to have a good time with the audience at a show, and would not mind sharing a beer with you at the local bar later. Joe Walsh is one of the funkiest, bluesiest guitarist on the planet. Just this side of George Thorogood. Joe will tell you, "Life's Been Good", and while your at it, you can stay at the "Hotel California", an Eagles song, to which he contributes, a lot.
The story behind this song is even better. According to Walsh, he was in between bands, feeling kinda down. The James Gang had dissolved and he didn't know what was going to happen for him. He was outside mowing his lawn and he looked up at the Rockies and the lyrics suddenly came to him. He got excited, left the mower running, and ran into the house to write down the words! And YES, he's the guitarist. That's his thing. He was In The James Gang, Eagles and solo.
Joe wrote this shortly after moving to Colorado. He'd been in the successful and popular band James Gang. for many years. James Gang was a power trio and Joe was looking to expand musically. He made the risky decision to go off on his own. He was mowing his lawn at his new home when he got the idea for this song. The reoccurring line "And we don't need the ladies cryin' cause the story's sad. Cause the rocky mountain way is better than the way we had." is directed to fans of James Gang.
I saw Joe play this one with Ringo Starr, Burton Cummings, Tim B Schmidt, and Todd Rundgren. '93 maybe. Was on the gorge in George Wa, at the Champs D'Elysees winery amphitheatre. Todd Rundgren played the slide guitar solo at that show.
Joe is a bad man, and always has been! Vocals, lead guitar, slide guitar, talk box, songwriting. Plus, he and Don Felder did a little lead thing from Hotel California which will be forever enshrined in our minds!
This is in that period when Joe became a solo artist, right after his first Band, "The James Gang," ended, and before he joined "The Eagles." Joe could have stayed a solo artist and done just fine, but when The Eagles asked him to join the Band, it probably wasn't a tough decision. Joe Walsh is so darn talented.
The Rocky Mountain way to me with the background is aiming for the top. I lived in Colorado Springs for 15 years and could see Pikes Peak off our back deck. It's inspiration to attain the best you can.
Joe Walsh is a legendary guitarist. That is why The Eagles recruited him in 1975. He brought a rock edge to the band, but he has a great solo career (and also with The James Gang and Barnstorm as well).
The picture on the video is of Longs Peak as seen from Bear Lake. The west side and the Keyboard of the Winds! About 20 miles from where I grew up and live now! As we say in Colorado, the only thing higher than the Rockies is the locals!
One thing I've always like about a lot of 70's rock is that the guitar rifts/solo's are slower and much better at letting the notes linger. Sometimes less is more. :)
Love Joe. Saw the Eagles back in the day, we happened to make our way up front, stage left. You guessed it, out comes Joe-probably 20ft +/- away from us. Lost my mind 😂. I couldn’t talk right for days-a little vocal strain I guess. Good times!
One of my favorite YT videos of Joe is actually not a music video at all... it is a video that demonstrates how he sets up a new guitar.... the art and detail he uses to get the guitar EXACTLY like he wants it is mesmerizing.....
Watch him doing this on Daryl Hall's music programme absolutely fantastic, still got it, amazing Musician , BTW Daryl's programme is full of brilliant Artists,
I saw Joe Walsh in OKC in about 1990. When this song came on he didn’t start singing, the audience did. To this day I believe Joe was too high or drunk and just forgot to sing. The review in the newspaper the next day said how cool it was that he let the audience start. Joe Walsh lived the Rocky Mountain Way.
He married Ringo Starr's daughter and now plays a lot with his band. They just did an amazing version of Rock around the clock! Also check out Joe's song " The Confessor"
