Yes the high he’s talking about is basically just him describing his sense of peace he felt in the mountains...its like a love song to Colorado he wrote it a couple years after he moved there and talking about how much he loved the state

Denver was an amazing Poet.. he’s called “The planet’s poet” because he was a big-time nature/outdoors lover, and it came through in most all his lyrics.. he makes you feel like you’re out in nature with him, and can feel how much he loved nature. Of course he was talking about the natural high one has just being in the presence of the great beauty of the rocky mountians but ive heard him say in interviews that he was camping way up in rockys with friends and yes they were "getting high" and a meteor shower occured and thats where the line "raining fire in the sky" came from.

I just noticed this is an old video, but since I'm old, thought I'd chime in. I recently drove through those Rocky Mountains / Mile High city Denver and let me tell you, that elevation is no joke. My shampoo, conditioner, lotion, vape juices all splooged themselves. Then, when a Cheeto bag literally PoPPeD / s'ploded I thought someone shot me. So much for my emergency road trip home to Las Vegas. The song is BEAUTIFUL...as are the Rockies! John Denver will always be one of the greatest folk singers and song writers of all time. Sad that he died so young and so tragically. He was a gift to humans and animals. p.s....I saw in a more recent video of yours a little one on your lap. She's ADORABLE!!! The part of the song that says they tried to tear the mountains down to to bring in a couple more, more people more scars upon the land. That is referring to the 1972 Winter Olympics that was going to be in colorado. John Denver and many other people from Colorado we're not for all the building that they would have to do, tearing the mountains down, and all the other people that would be swarming to Colorado for this event.

Some info on John Denver: He was born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr.. His Father was a pilot in the Air Force. His Father wanted him ( The son ) to follow in his (the Father) footsteps. Be an Air Force pilot. But, the son wanted to be a singer. After John found fame as a singer, he went and learned how to fly a plane. He even built his own experimental airplane, which he flew himself. The irony though is that it was during one of his flights with that aircraft that John Denver lost his life.😢
