She was already famous when she gave this iconic performance. You can tell by the audience response when she first began singing. Her voice is like honey on fire! Great reaction, thank you!
And that audience was filled with talented, epic entertainers who KNEW how good she was and familiar with this song.. Four minute standing ovation, not bad !
KD Lang. WOW! You really must watch KD's performance of "KD Lang Sings Leonard Choen's Hallelujah". Her standing ovation lasts for 2 minutes!!! Great reaction, btw, as always.
@@nickforell1 She has several versions of it. I put the link to the Juno Awards where she sang it, in the chat. To me that iteration has the perfect blend of cynicism and irony.
1990...no autotune...just pure talent! Actually, she and Roy did a duet of this song...it's fantastic. The reason the tribute meant so much to her is that she was so close to Roy before his death.
I have that album, "Ingenue," and these were definitely her more known tunes, but I really prefer her country style stuff. Not my favorite genre, but she just excels there. Her first album, "Shadowland," is perfection. "Drag" is also very cool.
Miss Chatelaine was great. She said she couldn't dress as she did in the video because then people might think she's "just another pretty girl." She has a great sense of humour along with her stunning voice. I love her!
He needed someone for a duet, and they suggested KD, not well known and country at that time. Once he heard her he said yes! There is a RU-vid video of them performing together we’re right before she hits the power mode he gets this huge smile. He loved her voice! This collaboration propelled her forward!
Her and Roy Orbison also released a duet of this song. She was a star before she did this song, at least here in Canada. She rivals even the best vocalists on the planet. Should check out "Constant Craving". One of my favourites. Great reaction.
That wasn't her first album. I've been following her back when she sang country sogs. Absolute Torch and Twang was one of her early ones and then a Bluesy album called Smoke or Drag, can't remember.
I am shocked by the number of you tubers who have never heard of KD Lang. Honestly the best voice out there. No light show, no costumes, no back up singers .. just the voice and power of an Angel. Gives you shivers… so beautiful.
She's something else. Listen to Canadian singer k.d. lang's huge hit, Constant Craving, from her first album Engénue. There's a 25th anniversary edition out from 2017. k.d. lang also did a series of duets with the great crooner Tony Bennett.
‘Ingenue’ wasn’t her first album. She had 4 country albums (three with her band, The Reclines) before ‘Ingenue’. She won the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the album ‘Absolute Torch and Twsnf’ two years before ‘Ingenue’.
@@zivo24 thank you for this! I had a feeling Ingenue wasn't her first album, but didn't take the time to research it. Constant Craving on Ingenue was how I first discovered her. It was a HUGE hit.
kd is a Canadian national treasure. Far and away one of the best singers I've ever heard. She can sing just about anything, across a wide range of genres.
At 62, kd is basically retired. She won her first Juno, Canadian Music Award, in 1985. But recording the duet version of “Crying” with Roy Orbison in 1987 was a huge boost to her career as it charted on both the Billboard Country and Adult Contemporary charts and won a Grammy. As a solo artist, she won a Grammy in 1989 for ‘Absolute Torch and Twang’, and in 1993 for “Constant Craving” from ‘Ingénue’. Would have been interesting to see what her career would have been, had she not been banned from US Country Music radio in ‘92, after coming out as a lesbian. This performance of “Crying” at Roy’s tribute concert, as well as “Hallelujah” at Leonard Cohen’s induction into the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame are two of my favorites from her. But I played the heck out of the ‘Ingénue’ and ‘Drag’ albums back in the day. And loved seeing her delight Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. A truly remarkable voice. Fun fact: She and co-writer Ben Mink are credited on the Rolling Stones’ “Anybody Seen My Baby”. Jagger subconsciously picked up the chords from his daughter’s repeated playing of “Constant Craving”.
She also owns "Hallelujah". There are dozens of versions out there. My favourites are her performance at the 2010 Olympics and right after that, her performance at the Logies in Australia (i.e. same year). She was also Leonard Cohen's favourite, as she sang the song in the mood which he wrote it (it's not a happy religious song!).
She’s on a completely different ‘planet’ when it comes to singing; her own songs or a cover - no one like her! As other’s have said, her cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is something to behold. In fact - Mr. Cohen, before he passed, said that it was her song now… no longer his! Her duets with the late Tony Bennett are also something you would enjoy. She’s a Canadian treasure.. you’ll enjoy hearing more of her music!
“Constant Craving” and “The Air That I Breathe” are my two favorites by KD Lang! She’ll bring you to tears just be being so talented you can’t help but be amazed!
You need to hear K.D.'s version of Hallelujah. Search "K.D. Lang sings Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah" there are other live versions, but I like this one the best.
This. It's a whole different take than other hallelujah covers (e.g. Pentatonix, whose cover is my fave).. as individual artists go, K.D. is my favorite.
I absolutely loved watching your reaction to seeing and listening to K.D. Lang sing. She’s amazing and I’m 75 years old and it’s so emotional whenever I hear her. Have loved her for many years. But watching you was beautiful too. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I cry every time I hear K.D. sing. She should have been world famous! World famous!! The most underrated singer in the world even though we fellow Canadians adore her.
Um... no. She sang a duet of Crying with Roy, for which they won a Grammy in 1989. She was also a favourite of Johnny Carson, and was a guest on his show a number of times, which really boosted her career.
Listen to her album "Ingenue" Great from beginning to end. I believe she also won the Grammy for Best New Artist. Many wonderful memories of listening to her glorious voice. 😊 🎶
She is phenomenal. An absolute artist. Not only is her voice powerful, her technique masterful and her timing out of this world, but her voice just sweeps into your soul and leaves you crying for more. Last time I saw her live, she reduced a rowdy crowd of 65,000 people to awed silence, with just two songs. Check out some of her lesser known stuff - Barefoot and another Roy Orbison penned song, Till the Heart Caves in (a Dave Grohl favourite). Also, some of her earlier country stuff is well worth a listen - Western Stars and Lock Stock & Teardrops are 2 of my faves. One of my favourite albums of hers is Sing it Loud - the songs on there are fantastic. Also, Hymns of the 49th parallel album. Just stunning.
Links for the songs I mentioned, for anyone who wants a deep dive into k.d.'s awesomeness... Here's Barefoot: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I4FkncWeIRs.html
So glad you found kd! She has an absolutely stunning voice, and her musicianship is impeccable. She is an alto, and the clarity of her voice is just spine-tingling.
My favorite female vocalist ❤ you won't be disappointed by the queen of torch and twang. ☺️ I highly recommend her cover of Hallelujah, either the Juno awards or Olympics version (I prefer Juno), and my personal favorite is her cover of Cole Porters "So in Love". Enjoy the journey and thanks for the reaction!
She already was a Star, but many Americans did not know that. ❤k.d.❤ Check out her album, “Ingenue” ❤❤❤ She recorded Cryin’ as a duet with Roy (I’m sure he was so proud of this performance), and performed multiple duets with Tony Bennett and others. You’ve got to check those out. Incredible.
Another Great Canadian singer, Tony Bennett thought she was a great singer, her duets with Tony Bennett are wonderful, as is her duet with Roy Orbison, and her versions of (Leonard Cohen's) "Hallelujah" are great (literally)!!!
Check out one of my fave performances of kd...it's 1995 live in Sidney, Australia. "Three Cigarettes In An Ashtray". She is such an icon, I can't believe her voice sometimes😊❤
She and Roy sang this together on more than one occasion before he passed. It isn't what made her famous, but it was an incredible collaboration. He knew how much she loved him. I saw her twice in Seattle during her "torch and twang" era (yes, country western) before this. Her band was called the Reclines. I went to the first concert, then felt inspired to bring my 8 year old daughter the next night. Check out her rendition of Johnny Get Angry. I felt my wee girl child needed to see it. She has the best voice in the universe. Thank you k.d. for what you have given us.
One of the rare few performers with 4 octaves in their toolbox, decades ahead of her time. My favorites of her are Pulling Back the Reins and Trail of Broken Hearts.
pulling back the reigns!!!! that original video is such a testament to her talent. it was made back in 1989/90. her label wasn't even sure how to market her quite. and she just stands there and sings her head off. and that is all you need. one of the great singers of all time.
I love both of these artists. Roy Orbison was one of a kind. His voice was amazing. K D Lang, well equally amazing voice. She doesn't just sing a song, she "performs" the song and connects with the lyrics like no other. And yes her performance of Hallelujah is amazing especially the live performance at the winter Olympics in Calgary. Her tribute performance to Roy Orbison of Crying will leave you Crying it is that good!!!
Yep that’s what I said WoW! I met K D Lang once in palm springs Ca. She was watching Tennis Championship and just happened to run into her. Just an amazing singer.
The audience was full of entertainers, artists, singers, bands, etc. She got a FOUR-minute standing ovation. I don't know vocal expertise, but her voice has so much depth. She has the power and controls her vocals SO well. I love her styling and the little "yodel" point she has in her voice, or the growl she used once. WOW *Suggestion: her hit song "Constant Craving" and Hallelujah are two great songs to hear. TY for your positive reaction !
The combination of power and total control is unmatched. When she looks upward and mouths the words "thank you, Roy" it gets to me every time. The humility in that gesture coming from that great a talent amazes me.
Thank you so much for your exemplary response to this extraordinary Artist’s performance. I find it so rare that someone can basically outperform the original artist with a cover, but K.D Lang takes Hallelujah to another dimension in the stratosphere with her gentle and powerful voice with an unearthly elegance and her own unique perfection. It makes everyone cry, because that’s what being deeply moved by the Divine does! It’s Precious. ❤
WOW! I never heard that. KD Lang at her best!💜 She was one of the back up singers in Roy Orbison's Black and White Nights, which is an iconic performance! Young Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and many more were in his band, and singing with him. Check it out if you can. It's amazing! 💜
I remember watching this video concert tribute to Roy Orbison when it was first broadcast. Hard to believe it's been over 30 years. There were many outstanding performances (notably Benny Mardones doing Running Scared), but KD was the clear show stopper.
she was here in vancouver and sang Hallelujah for the winter Olympics, I love how she never wears shoes, not even for a show that huge, LOVE KD Lang!! if you have not yet heard The Hu - wolf totem, you need to!!
KD was my neighbor in the 90s... We talked often and I used to sing back then and she asked me to do a duet with her once and I refused. Love you KD and i have never forgotten you.
K.D. was already famous and had an established career - known well at this point around the world... AND having performed with Roy before. --- This specific performance was a turning point for her, and yes, it put her center stage in the spotlight for more reasons than a tribute. The climate within the LGBT community had just begun to cool from the hate it had received from the AIDS crisis. This single performance placed a laser focus on us again - but not for the expected or obvious reasons. It was a bridge that healed. People began to think differently about acceptance. K.D. became a hero and a voice for many young gay kids -- because there was no denying, she gave a powerhouse performance here. ----- There are moments in life that mark specific passages. This was one of those moments for me. It made me proud to be a young gay man. It woke me up to the cultural diversity of the gay community throughout different parts of the world. It touched the souls of so many. Who says music can't heal? As I look back on the MANY decades that I have lived, I have seen this performance many times... and it has remained one of those wonderful musical moments that profoundly placed a marker in my life.
k. d. lang (following the stylistic choice of e.e. cummings, poet), one of Canada's greatest gifts to music. Johnny Carson loved her, and had her on his show many times. She classifies her music style as "torch & twang". So many great songs - originals and covers.
Absolute torch and twang came out in 1989. Constant craving was a hit in 1992 and is an amazing song. Miss Chatelaine is another. For fun, Big boned girl from southern Alberta.
