Jimmy Page was a a session guitarist at a very young age, and then was in The Yardbirds. When they ended, he decided he was going to form a group of really good musicians, the best possible. The bass player and keyboardist is John Paul Jones, when was also a studio musician who heard Jimmy Page was starting a new band, and asked to join. Originally he tried to hire Terry Reid as lead vocals, but he was unavailable, but recommended Robert Plant. Robert was a good friend of John Bonham, who was making a living playing in various bands. Jimmy said the first time they played together, they realized they had magic. Jimmy paid for their first album, but they were unable to get a record company in England to distribute, but Atlantic records signed them and allowed them control of their own music. They toured the US, and by the end of their first tour, they were a hit. Jimmy said they always sold out, having to add dates to their tours to try to accommodate their fans.
Mayo man I’m an old lady now but I grew up in a music town during the golden age of music At age 17, in Jan 1969, a date took me to a music club to check out an unknown band. It turned out to be Led Zeppelin!! Can you imagine that happening now?! I had similar brushes with greatness all the time - if I knew it was going to be important I would’ve taken notes😂 I enjoy seeing your reactions and appreciation for great classic music
PTTP, I had a similar experience. I was at college, playing foosball (school sport there). A buddy asked if I wanted to go to a concert that night. I said sure, why not. Who is it? He told me Led Zeppelin and I hadn't heard of them. Great concert, around '76 or so in Phoenix. Turns out I had heard them. Years earlier, I was staining my Sister's decks in the Colorado mountains. The only 8-track she had that I liked was this pink one. No label. I played it over and over for hours. It was the IV album. Been a huge fan the rest of my life. I love to relive this experience with reviewers.
Keep going, Led Zeppelin doesn't disappoint and there's plenty of great music to explore. Oh and all the bands of today owe their success these guys...they ARE the template for all who followed.
Hi guys, ... John Paul Jones is a multi instrumentalist who was a massive force behind Zepp.... Rock and Roll and The Ocean are 2 classic examples of slap bang British rock where John appears a bit overshadowed but in more complicated tracks , such as, No Quarter or Kasmir etc. he is the main creative force.
"A biker village" ... lol. And great words at the end about absence of cell phones. It really was such a different way to watch music and just feel it so physically second-by-second. Very engaged.
One of the best rock bass players. That's why they sounded like a thunder with just one guitar and that crazy rhytm section. But it is normal thay you didn't notice on the first listen. Camera did not show him often.
Yeah. This guy needs to check out Professor of Rock on RU-vid. He has the story of how the song came to be. And it was a big middle finger to the critics
What I like about Jimmy and his guitar style is that he was always primarily very melodic without shredding too much into the off keys and loosing the main melody of the song ...
Check out the original album cut when you get a chance, the sound is just so tight on it. It's what we heard on the radio all the time and on the record album when we played it. And Robert Plant sings a lot higher on it for sure.
You need to check out the bluesy side of Led Zeppelin. Try "Since I've Been Loving You " live from the same concert in Madison Square Garden this song is from.
The best of all time! I'm so glad I got to see them in 1974, Page & Plant in 1994, Robert Plant solo in 2009, and now Robert Plant and Allison Krauss next weekend!
Those 4 Guys are the MOST Important 4some EVER. If you are going to Remember Adam Levine's name, then you most certainly need to know these 4 names. John Paul Jones, Base/Keyboards, John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham, Drums, Jimmy Page (Legend) Guitar, Robert Plant Harmonica and Viking.
When they originally came to San Diego, my friend was part of the concert crew at the venue they were playing and he had to set up the stage with Jimmy Page's guitar at an exact spot on the stage so he could walk out in the dark and pick up his guitar. So they had to step off the placement. You notice in this video they start with a dark stage, but I am not sure if this was the same tour.
Jimmy Page, "the guitarist" as you so blandly referred to him, routinely played multiple guitar parts on the studio versions of the songs. Live, he played in between the parts.
To speak to the bass, John Paul Jones may have been the most talented of the group. He played bass, keyboards and did the arrangements on some of their biggest hits including Kashmir. You should check him out. They were all head of the class and that rarely happens.
hi michael, you're ok ? the guitarist is jimmy page, usually in the top 5 best guitarists ever. the singer is robert plant, who i'm going to marry my next time round. good reaction again though.
Hi Michael! Just so you know, the picture that was on the video suggestion is for The Beatles singing Love Me Do. The video title below the picture is for Led Zeppelin - Rock and Roll.
If I’m not incorrect, they wrote this song in 20 minutes in the studio. Pure brilliance!!! Definitely modeled with some Chuck Berry influence. It is like driving a Ferrari around a race track from the get go.
Nobody in today's music can hold a candle to Led Zeppelin! That kind of music died long ago! It's all auto tune and over produced music! And today's live bands play to back tracking and click tracks! Not Zeppelin! They are true masters musicians! No backing tracks click tracks auto tune in their music! It's all real live on stage! Zeppelin started the new form of music witch most bands followed! Even today artist worship zeppelin! You have Jimmy Page lord of the dark strings wizard Robert Plant the golden rock singer God and the God of Thunder John Bonham aka Bonzo true beast on the drums! And of course can't forget John Paul Jones on bass and keyboard's zeppelins secret weapon! Zeppelins music is timeless!
Back in the old days when guys actually played instruments with no backing tracks or auto tune. The “bass player” in the background was one of the best bassists of all time - John Paul Jones. He liked to keep a low profile.
You mean you didn’t notice what the bass player was doing? And you thought Jimmy Page was just making up things? Meanwhile, Page was playing on recording sessions as a freelance musician doing commercials and sessions for other groups when he was just a kid. Not to mention he played as a member of The Yardbirds who had also employed Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. And a number of groundbreaking hits. I won’t try to tell anything about John Paul Jones. It probably won’t help.
The songs that have start/stop feel were written by the bassist John Paul Jones, and the songs that have a more smooth feel were written by Jimmy Page, the guitar player.
John Bonham is my favorite drummer of all time. I love Neil Peart as well and tons of drummers, but Bonzo is the one. He died so early and it effectively ended the band. If you notice his drum cadence that leads into this song, that is a tip of the hat to Little Richard's drummer, and it is a slight embellishment of the drum intro into the Little Richard hit You Keep A Knocking But You Can't Come In.
No hate for not knowin'. That bass player is one of the greatest musicians that ever lived. John Paul Jones arranged, played keyboards, mandolin and recorder as well as bass. Many of his basslines are simple and driving, such as with Rock and Roll, but many are nuanced and sophisticated. The fact is that it is almost impossible for a player like Page to be so free without a really gifted rhythm section, especially in a trio lineup. Cream, VanHalen Bad Company, Queen, The Who and Jimi Hendix Experience are just a few examples of other bands who had titanically gifted bassists who created a tonal and rhythmic anchor for a genius guitarist. Oh...the drummers too. You just can't have a weak link in a trio. Great content. Cheers!
Mike...your comment regarding Jimmy "improvising" is spot on. The song came into being when Bonzo was fooling around and began to play the that iconic drum intro which was inspired by Little Richard's "Keep a Knocking"ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bkzlMxdnSDg.html . Jimmy just jumped right in, completely off the cuff, with that killer opening riff based off A,D and E chords...and off they went....written and recorded in just a few hours. Next up for you should be "Achilles Last Stand" live Knebworth 79'...but make sure you're ready...its indescribable...you've been warned
Lmao. Obviously you don't know Jimmy Page. I don't know how that is possible but. Of course he is calm. He has been playing hid whole life. I believe he was 12 the first time he played on TV.
I'm sure I've herd that the song's rhythm was drawn from John Bonham jamming out Johnny B Goode on the drums (intro bit) and picking up on the American Rock & Roll scene than had been going on along with the blues stuff they drew from, along with many British blues bands of the time, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green) etc. IT turn out Elvis was one of Robert Plants big likes too.
You actually need to listen to John Paul Jones's bass playing in isolation. He is certainly ine of the best players in rick history. He is also a great keyboard player
It doesn't sound rehearsed because it was so well rehearsed. Spontaneity in guitar is often the by-product of expertise, scales, and a knowledge of theory. You have to know grammar to know how to write.
Jimmy Page is the guitarist. He was a prodigy on guitar as a pre teen. By 18 he was a studio musician and learned music theory and his craft. And its where he met the guy who became the bassist and keyboardist for the group, John Paul Jones. Page is considered to be one of the top 5 guitarists of the rock era. The singer is Robert Plant and when Page offered the job of singer in the group he was forming that became Led zeppelin, Plant recommended a drummer who played in a group with him and was also a good friend, John Bonham. All 4 are considered GOATs. The best. Zeppelin is also considered the best rock band ever. These guys are way above anyone else. And no singer today could do what these guys do. They are used to studio tricks like computerized instruments and auto tune. Most music today is actually fake. Its all programed and most is AI. Zeppelin ran on pure talent. No tricks. No computer. No fakery in the studio. It's natural.
A well known radio personality once opined that the best show and worst show he ever saw was Led Zeppelin. When they were "on" they were unmatchable. When they wernt, it was a trainwreck. You might consider listening to the studio version. This song is actually a tribute to the birth of rock and Roll. Talking late 40s early 50s. "Been a long time since I did "The Stroll"" is an example. John Paul Jones. Bassist. And keyboardist. Check out "Them Crooked Vultures". He joined with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. He is a master musician, classically trained. Dump some Zep studio albums and you will hear his bottom end.
Steve Marriott is the only one I can think of that would do a decent job of replacing Robert Plant. Plant brought so much to the table that I doubt that anybody else could have ever done what he did. Freddie Mercury would have had to change his style a lot, and I don't think he was a natural fit like Robert, who was very steeped in the blues.
*Recommendation:* Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (from Led Zeppelin) team up with Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins (the Foo Fighters) to play 'Rock and Roll' live at Wembley Stadium, 2008: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SbNVIPAABgw.html
Know one can match led zeppelin the greatest band ever to walk planet earth Allahu akbar God is the greatest go ahead bring on any other rock and roll bands Know one can match led zeppelin
A lot of great guitar players, no-one is the GOAT, to subjective. I came across and old 1993 video on, RU-vid you might like to check it out, the video isn't the best, but the picking was spellbinding, "The Devil Went Down to Nashville" covered by a young Keith Urban, watch all and be amazed!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
What’s with the jar of mayonnaise behind your head? And please if you’re going to bop to the music could you pick the same beat as the song you’re listening too?
Spot on about the phones. Every event is kind of ruined now because everyone is filming it but no one is watching it. It's embarrassing. Plus you can't see shit...all you see is the idiot in front of you with their phone arm raised up. People are just getting dumber thanks to social media and ''smart'' phones. One of the best reactions I've seen and I enjoyed your commentary. Subscribed!
the stupidest comment to say the "guitarist is impraving", doesn't seem like a song?" like he's doing what ever? You need to understand you are hearing this for first time.. this is the song! these guys are pros! such a dumb way to react..
