Thanks for the reaction! Leonard Cohen was an amazing singer-songwriter, poet, and novelist from Canada who became internationally recognized not only his very deep voice, but also for the really deep lyrics in his songs. He had great success with his song "Hallelujah", particularly after it was covered by Jeff Buckley and kd Lang, and went on to receive a ton of awards around the world over six decades of performing. My favourites songs are "A thousand Kisses Deep," "So Long Marianne," "Bird on the Wire," "First we take Manhattan," "You Want it Darker," and "Dance Me to the End of Love." They are all great and encourage you to check them out.
I really don't know how long I have been enthralled with the music of Leonard Cohen, but surely for 4 or more decades. I remember how sad I was when he passed away, but his music will never die. He really was one of the most unique composers, writers, and singers who was ever born. Thank you for your reaction!
Leonard and Bob Dylan are the two big folk icon/poets of the 20th century. Cohen from Canada, and Dylan from the US. 'The Future' is one of his best, but he has sooooo many! 'Suzanne', 'The Sisters of Mercy', 'Famous Blue Raincoat', are some awesome numbers of his. 'Dance to the end of Love' is a romantic mainstay.
Leonard wrote "Hallelujah", which has been covered hundreds of times by many different artists. He's got a lot of great songs. I also suggest you check out Tom Waits, who is a rabbit hole all by himself.
Leonard Cohn wrote and sang many wonderful songs. I have a few favorites. Listen to Anthem I thing that is another deep one, with the line "there is a crack in everything, that is how the light gets in."
A unique and highly regarded songwriter who first become well-known in the mid-1960's. This is a later recording with deeper bass voice. Check out You Want it Darker, Hallelujah, Dance Me to the End of Time, Famous Blue Raincoat. Suzanne, Bird on a Wire, Sisters of Mercy, So Long Marianne are great early works that established him for a long career. Worth the journey to explore his music!
The first songs I'd check out of Leonard's are "In My Secret Life", "The Future", and "Closing Time". There are so many others, though. His earliest stuff in the '60s was folk, and he moved into the groovier stuff later on. "Famous Blue Raincoat" is a slower song from that era, but pure poetry.
Leonards career, extended from the 70's to 2016. He is an amazing poet and musician. Thanks for a great reaction. If you want more Bass check out his later work such as You Want It Darker.
I love this song Ace! Thanks! He was known more for his songwriting more than his vocals, very unique, and he is a master story-teller! You likely know he wrote Halleluiah. BTW I love the hair and beard! You look great!!
The references and relevance of this song pretty much has been the same so deeply spoken like a story teller telling someone this what went down back then and continues to do so today. Gives me chills each time I hear this song. His deep voice and melodic music is great. What he says has people thinking and reminding us how everyone was and still is being treated, and mistreated.
You've just had your first experience with Cohen's cynical poetry. As some have already said, the man is known more for his lyrics than his music, although the latter usually complements the words very well. Your reaction upon first hearing his voice is priceless! 🤣 Hope you enjoy more Leonard Cohen's songs! 🐝
Cohen is a wonderful poet who worked with fantastic musicians. Many of the musicians worked with him for decades. I saw his last tour and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended ☮️. Try - Closing Time
He is one of my top three lyricists, Dylan and Mitchell are the others, he's words are dark but humerous and compassionate too. My biggest musical regret is I never caught him live (close but the fates conspired).
Leonard is amazing. For me, the second greatest ever songwriter. Check out his song The Future or the beautiful duet with Julie Felix on her tv show Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
You are right about the 80s beat. This is from Cohen's come back album from the 80s, in which he experimented with a new sound. Before that he used folk instruments.
Ace, believe it or not, this is not even deep for him. It got deeper as he got older. As you go down the old rabbit hole make sure you go to the end and listen to his last three albums especially "You Want it Darker "......have fun and Oh Canada ! :)
