Marty Robbins was a great story teller……El Paso is part of a trilogy, the 2nd song is “Feleena” ( her story and the 3rd is “ El Paso City” that ties the whole thing together.

I remember listening this song on my record player as a child. It was parents record and it was one of my favorites. Phantoms 309 was another record I wore out if anyone remembers that one. 😂

I've owned this album since it came out. Marty came to my hometown Reno and performed. I was too young to go to his shows. But I met him at the Friday night Stockcar races. He raced that with my father and the other Stockcar racers. He was a cool guy.

This is the first of a trio of songs. The second one is Feleena, but and the third one is El Paso City. You need to hear them all to appreciate the whole story.

I grew up every weekend of my life with my father playing this song on guitar and singing it as well. He sounded just like Marty Robbin’s or whoever he chose to copy. He was also very good being himself. Love Marty Robbin’s, this brings back so many good memories of my childhood. My father and grandfather could play banjo and guitar as good as it gets and they played by ear, no lessons. My dad lived around Detroit in this era and was often on local t.v. programs performing. I have photos of him from some, wish I had videos.

Welcome to a whole other universe of music, Ace. It's huge and it is a gigantic part of music evolution towards Rock and pop. Much of it is before my time but I know it so well because it was in my early environment and I played in two different bands that did music from that and older eras of country/rockabilly/bluegrass, and learned all the faces and voices and all the related bands, and all the history and all the people and all the characters and the infamous shows and the tragic story lines and the success stories, on and on it goes, just like any other world of music. Anyway, that was great watching you discover it. There is so much out there. And yeah it feels like it is swaying, it's a 6/8 beat, meaning, it's like a waltz, but you string two cycles of three together to make a cycle of six, but the strongest emphasis is on the first downbeat, but when you get to the 4th beat, you also put an accent but just not quite as strong, so it has this on again off again always cycling back feeling that goes against a straight beat but it's gentle. Like, ONE 2 3 Two 2 3, ONE 2 3 Two 2 3, repeating over and over, but it's like counting to six over and over. It has a lilting and swaying feel. And I was definitely having a cinematic experience in my head to this, I do every time because it's just so visual. I can totally picture it but then again I saw a lot of westerns from the old days on rerun on Saturday mornings when I was a little kid. Looking back from today, a lot of people would consider this old school country but it's really not, but it's not far from it it's just that country music had a history for at least two or three decades before this, but this really was a growing age of what I think of as classic country, and Marty Robbins was huge. Here's one I think you'll appreciate. This guy had a hit with this in the early 60s, which is when I was born. So obviously I didn't know it until a little while later, but I think you might appreciate the appearance that he presents as and he's a very talented singer and he can really spit when it gets right down to it. And then just to see the backing band and it's in black and white and it's on a television appearance and it just gives you a glimpse into the time and even why this would be a hit. And it's a really fun song when you get right down to it. And there's some storytelling as well. The Auctioneer, by Leroy Van Dyke. You can have auctions for all kinds of things and there is quite the history of cattle auctions, and the auctioneer is the person that they hire to come up and MC the whole thing. But they have to be really fast on their feet and very verbally talented because they are handling all these bids from the audience to compete against each other to buy something. And then they repeat it fast and a whole lingo developed from it and at the end he just totally goes off. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pPqzfiesoJY.html&pp=ygUidGhlIGF1Y3Rpb25lZXIgc29uZyBsZXJveSB2YW4gZHlrZQ%3D%3D

Wow...thank you for sharing, this is so informative and appreciated. I remember watching this video several years ago and was so very impressed with the auctioneering skills that I began listening to several videos about it. As a child I went to auctions with my father and granddad, so I had been exposed to them, but what do you know as a small child. lol I also was raised on MS I love his vivid storytelling...you are so right he does paint a beautiful picture in the mind as he tells these wonderfully raw and powerful stories. Again, thanks for sharing. 👍

It’s an old fashioned style of Mexican song ,sorry I can’t remember off hand. Robbin’s had success doing them in English. These old story telling stories always had the rocking sound so you can sing along as a group

Prairie Fire by Marty Robbins is a very fast paced song that tells a great story of a cattle drive cut short by a fire that they couldn’t out run. It tells of the fear they felt as the fire quickly overcame them. Very worth checking out.

There is a slightly longer version with an additional verse where the singer reflects on the "foul, ugly deed he has done." I think the added regret enriches the story.
