just an epic amazing song. One of the best ever recorded. Hetfield wrote this at 21 years old. the guy is a poet with lyrics. greatest frontman/singer/writer/rhythm guitar player to ever walk the planet

This song (Fade to Black) was on loop in my teenage years. Helped me through a lot of dark times. Just you think of fading to black doesn’t mean you will!

This is my favorite song. Not just as a Metallica song. This is my favorite song. The guitar wraps itself around your soul. I agree that the subject is touchy throughout society. Consider the people who are suffering, listening to this song and finding comfort in someone else having experienced the same pain. That potentially makes it a force for good, not evil. I feel blessed to have seen Metallica live when they were touring for the And Justice for All album. I would suggest you check out the live show in '89(I think) in Seattle. It's them, in their prime. Every minute of it is incredible. I don't know what all you've done from them. I would suggest 'Creeping Death' and 'Wherever I may Roam'. I'm new here, but I have enjoyed your reactions and I like the way you explore the band and song after you listen. Keep it up. Good luck. 🎉

Not just lyrically, but the whole experience of the music mirrors a certain kind of depressive suicide. The empty agony of existence and the sudden rush of energy when you stop seeing death as something to be feared, but a welcome friend there to take away the pain. That it fades away on such a solo says it all really. That the music understands it so well tells someone who is experiencing it that they are not alone, for every kid that died listening to this song you can be sure there are hundreds, if not thousands who are alive because they stopped feeling alone. I'm one, there are going to be plenty more who are watching this are ones too. Not talking about suicide and death in general has never stopped it from happening, it just makes it harder for those who are in that pain to reach out.

Mine as well this song surprises many people. The 1st half comes through so slow clear but still remaining tough. Then the 2nd half is just gold. Metallica simply shreds everytime..

Music doesn't make people hurt themselves. If anyone feels inspired to do something stupid because of a song, it's because they were on that path already. If anything, songs like Fade To Black provide a sense of comfort to people who are struggling. It helps them to feel like they're not alone, that there are people out there who understand what they're going through. Songs like Fade To Black save lives, not end them.

Similar to Stairway to Heaven, the brilliance of this song lays in two areas: a lack of choruses, and a slow build from start to finish. 🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥 While the Master of Puppets album is epic, the Ride the Lightning album is my favorite in terms of production and overall sound. Check out Creeping Death, their take on the biblical story of the Exodus from Egypt. It's easiest the last that blame in Rock and Metal simply because they are brave enough to talk about the difficult subjects of life. To me, and millions of fans, it simply lends them an aire of credibility and realism.

Great job as always, it’s amazing seeing other reactor’s getting so many views when they don’t even listen to the songs. They blatantly miss the meanings of every track, never mind that they don’t understand/appreciate the underlying sounds/instruments like you so obviously do. Keep it up, you are appreciated for your effort.

Among the gear the group had stolen was an amp James mother gave him for his sixteenth birthday. Unfortunately she had cancer. And their family would not allow her to seek chemo or any other treatment, for religious reasons. That was the last of his birthdays she was alive. So when that amp was stolen, James was understandably cut deep.

For many people (and societies), I think it's just easier to blame others for their own shortcomings. Musicians just seem to be an easy target because of high visibility. Humans, in general, have always been that way and likely will be for a long time. Having music that expresses how one might feel in such dark times can help people process their own feelings, and I'm speaking out of experience. When authority figures in my life failed me in my youth, metal saved me in so many ways . . . and I am forever grateful and respect musicians who have the courage to delve into such topics. Great reaction and I look forward to your rant about that nonsense!!

Thank You! I've watched various reactions to this song. You're the first I've seen to actually notice how they faded out during the fantastic solo. As a kid in the 80s listening to this song on cassette, I was always annoyed by that. As an adult now, I get it.

It's just brilliant. James wrote this dealing with the loss of his mother. To me, the song is split into three parts. The acoustic guitar is/was James. The pure and innocent sound deciding which path to choose. As the acoustic guitar leaves, we are left with dark and deadly guitars, or the soaring and redeeming, lead guitar. The heaviness of guitars feed into our anger and despair. But the lead guitar is the light at the end of the tunnel, it's grace carrying us forward.

I was in a very bad place in my head for years and this is one of several Metallica songs that helped me get through that time. I bet we're thinking the same thing - a song like this isn't an invitation to commit suicide, it's a song that tells you that you aren't alone. That's so important when you are in that kind of headspace. Rock on, Kelly

According to James Hetfield (vocals & guitar), he wrote 'Fade to black' in 1984 after his favorite guitar amp was stolen on tour... he was depressed at the loss. Also, Lars Ulrich (drums) said he and James talked a lot about death between 1983/ '84 while touring on their 1st album "Kill 'em all"... There was not a lot to do between shows on tour but watch TV... and CNN provided some inspiration for the lyrics on the 2nd album 'Ride the Lightning'... The band jammed on 'Fade to black' in '84 and all 4 members added their contributions to the song. Ironically, James Hetfield was nearly killed in 1992 while playing 'Fade to black' at a concert in Montreal... He walked out on stage while playing the intro and the stage pyro went off where was standing and burned him severely... He was rushed to the hospital and was lucky to survive. He couldn't play guitar for weeks because of his injuries, so he chose tour only singing while another guitarist was hired to play his parts ... The Montreal show in '92 w/ Guns N' Roses ended up in a riot after Metallica cut their set short after James' accident... Guns N' Roses only played part of their set and walked off stage because Axl Rose (vocals) was having trouble w/ his voice... the crowd rioted and tore up and looted the venue.

hey AC, SUPER SELECTION!! And yeah, James, Kirk, and Lars were masters of double entendres. Hell, triple too, for that matter! You were quick to point out “the empty spots,” between the refrains, and verses / chorus lines. That too, was an allusion to death, the empty spots musical name being “the dead space.” Their music is some of the hardest Metal Rock, or what some referred to as “Thrash Rock,” to learn to play. It takes two, essentially lead guitarists, with a mastery of the guitar and music theory and application, and a Bassist who can lay down a rapid, and continuous line, to boot. Because of James’ and Kirk’s complicated and intertwining lead lines, even if u find an accomplished Bass player, it’s very difficult for a band, especially a new band, to play their songs until they’ve been together a while, and learn the complex lead, and rhythmic lead lines, melded together seamlessly, if they ever really do. Then there’s Lars! I’ve heard and read many who criticize his drumming. 🙄 However, I never heard them behind the drum set! I believe he was one of the greatest drummers / percussionist of the 20th / 21st centuries. Their combined skills, coupled with their artistic writing skills and styles were second to none. Metallica left behind a huge body of work, and even dropped another album earlier this year! Whether there’s more to come or not, what they’ve produced already will stand the test of Rock & Roll time, to be enjoyed and imitated by future generations, decades to come. That said, like so many others, “they are often imitated, but never duplicated!” For u’r own pleasure, u should do “Metallica - Live in Moscow (1991).”. They rocked over a million Ruskies that day! Great selection, and reaction @AC!

Another side to that argument: Metallica, who had the financial resources to sue, stood up for all the other artists who couldn't afford it. You're entitled to your own opinion, and it's understandable, but musicians, in general, do not get compensated anywhere near enough for their art.

So you work for free? You must be quite the humanitarian! Metallica (namely Lars) had the foresight to see where technology was going and established a precedent for artists to be paid for their WORK (you may listen to it as pleasure, but it is their copyrighted work product). Turns out he was right and for what it's worth, Metallica provides a ton of free content for their fans. They upload their full albums and hours of concert footage and "making of" documentaries for FREE. It is idiotic to hate on them just because they wanted what they rightly deserved and worked for. You are so stuck in time with that cliche argument.
@Frostrazor
@Frostrazor 10 месяцев назад
Lars and Metallica were ahead of the curve for their work on Napster and online piracy. In the end - they were 100% on the right side of the law, and practical decency for musical artists. If they hadn't drawn that line in the sand then and made a stand, there's no way of knowing how bad things could have gotten for artists who deserve to be paid for their craft. And they didn't sue their fans. They went after the people making money off of sharing their songs for free.
