This is a GD masterpiece forever and always. Also, singing about suicide is not endorsing suicide. And many people have said listening to this song and knowing that others share their pain / depression has helped them through that.

How it makes you feel is how it makes you feel. No correct answer to that one, but I consider that solo at the end to be him `checking out` and it fades to black in the end. I think what keeps this song from being just a meaningless dive into suicide is how relatable it is to many people. He's singing about something very real that thankfully most people don't go through with, but have gotten right to that edge. "Emptiness is filling me to the point of agony." I've even heard people say this song probably saved their lives. Hyperbole? Perhaps, but obviously had an impact either way.

The solo at the end is like the backing music is his mind/soul leaving the body and the solo is his body fighting by instinct against what he's doing. The solos in Master of Puppets is also very descriptive when he takes a hit and feels good and then when he feels abstinence.

The solo at the end is the adrenaline rush of the person, as you feel the bubble bass drum kicks in thats persons heart beat speeding up and the guitarist riffs get higher and and more intince painting the picture if feelings just before the person ends his life!

Sometimes seeing our selves in potential dramatic/drastic situations it's the best way to avoid those scenarios. To me this song is gives me power to pursue better things in life and out do myself every day.

Many people exist who say that this song has helped them beat feelings of depression. The reason at least in my eyes for this is the idea that the song though dark in nature at the end picks up in intensity quite heavily and gives a feeling of an adrenaline rush that can lead to feelings of wanting to fight. Wanting to prove that you have the strength to keep going. If one thing is sure Metallica is a band made of people who are masters at pulling emotions out of a person through music. For that matter they are masters at making the music they play have an emotion of its own. I hear this song and I go into beast mode. An almost animalistic feeling of never giving up no matter what I'm going through. The solo at the end from Kirk is an absolute masterpiece and for me is by a long shot the best guitar solo ever created. I've heard nothing that for me comes close.

Great reaction as usual! I've had my struggles with depression and this is one of the songs that helped me get though it. It was part of a playlist that I'd put on when it was too much and I wanted out. It was very cathartic for me and helped to purge the desire to commit suicide when the blackness overwhelmed me. 🤘Rock On!🤘 Kelly

I don't know how to say this but the difference with Metallica and say Soundgarden is that when James sings about depression and suicide, there's heavy riffs to pull you out, where Soundgarden with songs like Fell on Black Days leaves you in the darkness. I think James dealt with his depression and suicidal thoughts with Anger, where Chris Cornell couldn't get past the sadness. James has an angry spirit and it's a blessing. I think it keeps him hear with us.

A few days before writing and recording this song, the band had much of their equipment stolen. Including an amp Hetfields mother had given him as a birthday present, before she passed away from cancer.

To answer your question, yes, the song was super controversial and many people were accusing them of promoting suicide, but I disagree, this song has helped me in ways not many can understand, and I promise you i’m not the only one who this song has saved from suicide. But changing the subject, this song in my opinion is the greatest piece of music of all time, it is instrumentally perfect, not too heavy and the guitar solo is unmatched

I prefer Unforgiven or Enter Sandman to this one, seemed to be lacking bass ! Best one to watch is "Enter Sandman" in Moscow, Russia Live in '91, with 1.6 Million People ! I was a teenager when this came out. More than a few of my friends and acquaintances are alive today because they heard this song and knew from it they were not alone. Resolving into some happy conclusion would have made that impossible because thats not how depression works.

Love Metallica, have all my adult life. I've just recently found your site and love it as well. When you have time, look up the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson. Everything she did is great but start with 1958 Hard Headed Woman and then look at her 60 year career. She's fantastic. I saw her live a few years ago and am so blessed to have gotten to see her.

Kids today think they have a "corner on the market" when it comes to inner turmoil and craziness of youth. This song, 40+ years old, proves that they don't. We had those same thoughts and feelings....but we had music, REAL MUSIC, that helped us through. Music today has No Heart, NO Soul......it's mindless garbage that not only doesn't help but contributes to the craziness. Curt wrote about, expertly, what we ALL went through...those dark periods in our lives that we though would never end. It's not a "Happy" song, and you aren't supposed to feel "Happy" after hearing it. It's SUPPOSE to make to Think....to Make you FEEL.....that's what Music is all about.

The big controversy was over Suicide Solution by Ozzy. The crazy thing is that song is a warning against alcoholism, calling it a slow form of suicide. Solution not referring to solving a problem but as in a liquid mixture.

The first part of the song the guy is sad and depressed. When the song speeds up, he is saying "good bye" to the old depressed person and he chooses to live! So the song is actually a positive song about living and fighting on. Great song.

it's a dangerous song imo. I remember one time (as you said you had also) I was at a crossroads. and this is gonna sound made up but I swear it's not. I was really thinking about doing it too and the song "Stand Tall" came on the radio and it was like it was speaking directly to me. And it gave me pause and some much needed perspective.
