Saw them in Sudbury in Northern Ontario Canada back in 1976 on their Hair of the Dog tour and this song was a highlight. 12,000 kids packed in a 6,000 seat hockey arena. Memorable night for a 16-year old.
@@johntarnowski9086 I grew up there. It's Northern Ontario. Hwy 17 has long been considered the dividing line, but the real point is that a band like Nazareth showing up in Sudbury in the mid 70s was a big deal. Major acts at the time were very far and very few between.
This single actually preceded "Love Hurts", off their debut album "Razamanaz". Some of their other hits include "Broken Down Angel" and "My White Bicycle". RIP Manny Charlton, their lead guitarist, who passed only last month (July 5) at the age of 80. Guys, another band I think you'd love is Slade, who actually did the ORIGINAL version of Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel the Noize". I think you'd get a kick out of "Take Me Back 'Ome", "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me", "Far Far Away", and "Run Runaway" (You'd love "Run Runaway", it has horns, violin, bagpipes, and killer guitar). Anyone agree?
Razamanaz was their 3rd.... not the Debut - It was their first hit, but bevore that therer was Nazareth & Exercises - This Flight Tonight is from the 4th record Loud ´n`Proud
Jay & Amber, "Hair Of The Dog" was another hit song for them! edit - Jay, Just one Track Coaches Association for the whole state? Small state population for sure. We have a County Track Coaches & Officials Association, and then a state Athletic Association.
@@Dbo83-g5v Yep, they certainly did the definitive version. Same as Gary Jules with Mad World, the original just wasn't the same, he took it and did something special.
You certainly made me smile today guys, here in Naz's hometown of Dunfermline. 😃 A classic from my Dad's mates I have been listening to for my whole life. Nazareth, believe it or not started out in the 60s as a damn good soul band, so I think that is what Amber is hearing in Dan's voice, the remnants of what was there BEFORE the night on the brandy 😆 The next step for Nazareth should be Razamanaz, then on through Dunfermline Rock into my friends, the incredible BIG COUNTRY, starting with Fields of Fire. Greetings fae Bonnie Scotland 🏴🤘🏴🤘🏴🤘🏴
BIG COUNTRY... Thank you... Bring it on.!!! (maybe some Deacon Blue to go along, too). Everyone always bangs on about the "Merseybeat" phenomena but all those bands ever did, really, was try to sound like and exploit The (admittedly brilliant) Beatles whereas Scotland, for a relatively small population has always punched well above its weight, musically, with no two artists or combos sounding alike. Take my hat off to you laddies (and lasses) for that.
@@jibteenuc9836 Scotland as a whole has certainly produced some incredible music, but we also gave the world the Bay City Rollers, soooo, sorry about that 😆 Our wee City of Dunfermline has really punched above it's weight. Iain Anderson of Jethro Tull, Nazareth, The Skids, The Rezillos Barbara Dickson and Big Country all came out of Dunfermline and I couldn't be more proud.
Didn't realise that Barbara Dickson came from Dunfermline, I've seen her a number of times, she was very good. Surprised that Iain Anderson was also from the same city, I was even more amazed to hear on Johnnie Walker's radio show that Mr Anderson doesn't have Scandinavian blood, with a name like Anderson, how come? Dunfermline has been a real source of musical genius, loved This Flight Tonight, Nazareth did a great job of it. Not a fan of Big Country, but The Rezillos I was amazed came from Dunfermline, so to with The BCR, wasn't a fan, yet they made popular songs. Was Mij Ure one of The Skids memebers? I will educate a mate of mine from your city, as he likes music.@@paulsmith2516
fun fact: this song was written by none other than Joni Mitchell herself !!!! The song appears on Joni's Blue album and sounds quite different from this one.
@@jibteenuc9836 Don't be sad. I've got the Blue Album (on cassette), but I've got the same problem. I must have had some reason for buying it, but maybe it was just something everybody was expected to have. In theory I like it. I just don't listen to it.
Loved my sister's Nazareth album when I was very young. Got back into them in the mid eighties. Bought Hair Of The Dog cassette! Wore that thing out in car cassette player. Nazareth Rocks!
Nazareth used to be one of my favorite bands. Back then I especially liked "Welcome to Alcatraz" and "Vigilante Man" ;-)). Hard rock started with something like that. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
You really have to check them out singing this on their on stage video ( Nazareth - This Flight Tonight (Austrian TV 1975) It's Awesome!! I'm positive you'll love it way more than just listening to the one you just did, you get to see the whole band and really hear them and see the Singer!
Nazareth are definitely rockers but you have heard NOTHING yet from them. if you want to hear them at their best, here's my picks: Top 5 Nazareth's songs to listen to next: 1. Hair of the Dog (Bad-ass hard rock song with iconic lyrics. Probably their biggest hit. Banger!) 2. Razamanaz (Aggressive, rocking, and rollicking hard rock song!) 3. Miss Misery (To hear Dan McCafferty's massive vocals on this one, he will blow you away!) 4. Vancouver Shakedown (One of their biggest hits) 5. Shanghaid in Shanghai (Maybe their best mainstream rock hit. Full of swag and very fun)
Good Song. More good ones are 'Sold My Soul', 'Miss Misery', 'Changin' Times', 'Please Don't Judas Me', 'Telegram', 'Lift the Lid' & 'You're the Violin.'
"Claim to Fame, Miss Misery, Crazy, May The Sun Shine, Hair of The Dog, Beggars Day, Love Hurts, and Please Don't Judas Me" are definitely some must-listen cuts that come to mind off the cuff. And, they're doing a few tour dates this summer and fall.
"Hair of the Dog" is probably their best known song, and definitely is a must-hear song, but my personal favorite is "Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment)", from the Heavy Metal movie soundtrack.
Funny story re Nazareth- My grandmothers best friend Mrs Scott's son used to get her tickets to the Usher Hall in Edinburgh every Xmas as a treat for a show, box seats!!. She went to the show and on her return she told my Nana all about it. Her only criticism was there were a lot of young folk and it was very loud. I asked what did she see? she replied Nazareth, her son who was in his 50's saw Nazareth and bought her tickets , thinking it was a nativity play . I was rolling on the floor in hysterics.
This song was written by Joni Mitchell and is a track from her Blue album. You should check out her version to appreciate just how much Nazareth altered the sound of an acoustic folk song to get this heavy rock version.
That is funny that Jay mentioned Deep Purple, because Roger Glover (bass player for Deep Purple) produced & promoted this band. They were good friends. You need more Nazareth & Deep Purple!!
This band back in the day if you look at the cover will give you a clue... trippin music. Great colors and sounds that really open your mind. Vancouver Shakedown is a great time. The album Razamanz has lighting bolts on the cover..tells it all..🥳
This is the type of song you need to listen to straight thru a few times without stopping it, you stopped it twice at the worst times, right at the best part when they sang " Your drinking sweet Champlain got your headphones up High!" and then again right when it was ending! Sometimes maybe just try to listen to the full song without stopping it and do the comments when it's done, to get the full affect of the song.
I’ve always thought that Nazareth is the band that Guns N Roses got their sound from, especially Axl Rose’s voice. They even covered their song “Hair of the Dog.”
GNR wanted Manny Charlton to produce their first album but their schedules didn't align. Charlton even flew to LA and made a couple demo tapes with them.
@@MissAstorDancer No! "Heart" did NOT borrow that riff from Nazareth. The galloping guitar sound goes back decades before this song or The Beatles. Roger Fisher was the one who came up with the variation of the galloping guitar sound for his band's song Barracuda. Nancy Wilson had absolutely NOTHING to do with the distinctive guitar riffs. The Wilson sisters have been spending the last few decades pretending that Heart was their band and that they were the only talent. Too bad that so many people take what they say as being true and don't know their motivations.
@@BobSoltis1 WOW! Bitter much? I never said that either sister had anything to do with Roger's riff. And your opinion notwithstanding, the band "Heart" WOULD NOT have become the band they became, without Ann and Nancy. Period.
@@MissAstorDancer Wow! Ignorant much??? Nancy Wilson is on record lying about how "they" came up with the riff. She was not anywhere near Roger and Mike when Roger came up with that riff. You are just repeating the lie Nancy made. The band that Ann and Nancy joined (neither one was a founding member as they often claim) would not have been great without ANY of the original members from the first recordings that contributed to their great creativity, chemistry, and sound.
@@BobSoltis1 I venture that we might be on fairly equal ground as to our knowledge about Heart's history. But ***some*** artists refer to themselves as "we", while others take all credit for themselves. I have seen every interview with A&N, and have never heard either of them claim to have been a founding member. They have always told about joining the band when Ann responded to an ad in a newspaper or something. And Roger Fisher famously said that when Ann came into the group, there was an instant magic and spark that entered the band that had not been there before. But I'm not gonna argue with you any more, because this is off-topic.
You should react to the 80s heavy metal band called Krokus. Their singer looks and sounds very similar to Nazareth's singer, so much so that it would almost tempt you to check if it's the same guy (it's not). A good starting place for Krokus is their HUGE hit called Screaming In The Night.
This is a total reworked version of a Joni Mitchell song. Also when they toured North America they had a warm-up act less known at the time who this song. On that band's next album they had a hit song called 'Barracuda' and Heart absolutely took some inspiration from this for that song!
One of my favourite tracks of all time. Quite how they came up with that arrangement of Joni Mitchell's song is amazing. It's almost unrecognisable from her original. This song became so associated with Nazereth that Mitchell used to introduce it as one of their songs when she sang it at her gigs. I find it bloody difficult to keep that time on the bass without a lot of practice. I love the break for the music on the headphones.
WHITE LION check out this band. They’re an 80s hair band and underrated. Their 2 most popular songs are ‘Wait’, which is heavier, and ‘When the Children Cry’ which is softer. Would love if y’all reacted to these!!
Great tune by Joni Mitchell given the rock treatment by a great band, I spun the 45 of their "May The Sunshine" at my last Festival gig. Please check out Joni's original also.
Manny Charlton was a master of guitar feedback. I’m pretty sure this song inspired Barracuda. The lyrics are so good. This is a cover of a Joni Mitchell song. You guys should have the lyrics available when you listen to a song. I think you would have appreciated this a whole lot more.
As people have said, this is a Joni Mitchell song. Nazareth's cover was received so well, that Joni would jokingly intro the song as a Nazareth cover in her concerts at the time :)
This song was actually written by Joni Mitchell, and her version is very subdued, but Nazareth took it and beat the daylights out of it to make it this song. If you want a harder one, definitely listen to hair of the dog.
They come from my city, Dunfermline, town, it was made a CITY, THIS YEAR did you know? The Scottish King's were laid to rest here, there is lots of LAYLINES, GO through the ABBEY THE " ALBION " LAYLINE BUT CROSSED WITH A FEW MORE, WELCOME TO DUNFERMLINE, (THE SKIDS) ANOTHER GROUP FROM HERE , WELL WORTH A LOOK INTO 😊
You need more Nazareth!! Check out "Kentucky Fried Blues", "Changing Times", "Shanghai'd In Shanghai", "Silver Dollar Forger" "I Want To Do Everything For You", "Razamanaz" or "Bad, Bad Boy".
Guys, I watch you all the time. I know you love Aerosmith, as I do, coming from Boston as well. I would love for you to Hear some of their older albums. They are all Bangers and Steven's voice was smooth. Try out "Get your wings", the song is Train kept a Rolling"! The entire album is great as well as their first 3 or 4 albums. I hope you get this Message! You will freak out!!!!
The bass line of this song inspired the bass/guitar riff of Heart's song Barracuda.😎 Mama, Let the boy play some rock and roll - Check out Jerry Doucette. Cheers. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You simply must listen to their version of the song “Vigilante Man”! It was written in 1940 by Woody Guthrie, but Nazareth give it a harder edge and Dan McCafferty’s voice is on fire for telling the story. A very under rated band imho, although not quite in the class of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
Good cover but can't beat Joni Mitchell's version. There's one for Female Friday. Maybe just do the whole Blue Album. Lol Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Even though most fans of the bands would disagree on their sounds being similar, the comparison between them and Deep Purple is not that far off being that they were both 70s hard rock bands. There were similarities between them as well as other hard rock bands from that time which would certainly include Uriah Heep and that bunch.
His Voice and the Bass Guitar are the Hook in this song..As a Guitar player it's a Basic chug on Guitar and simple barre chords and harmonics..VERY UNIQUE VOICE,,IN MY TOP 5 UNDERRATED BANDS IN THAT ERA FOR SURE...GREAT PICK AND AWESOME VIDEO THANK'S FOR THE TRIP BACK IN TIME I LOVE YOUR BACKGROUND ..LOT'S OF LEGEND'S HANGING ON THE WALL'S😎😎😎

Speaking of Scottish groups you should get back to, can we have some more Sweet, please? "Teenage Rampage", or "The Six Teens" would be wonderful, but almost anything ("Love is Like Oxygen", "Fox on the Run") will be welcome; they were very consistent songwriters. I'm not a huge fan of the novelty song, "Little Willy", but even that's well-executed.
