Peter Gabriel was the lead singer for Genesis before Phil Collins (Phil was already the drummer for the group… they kept trying out singers to replace Peter until they decided Phil was who they needed). Peter is very eclectic and has some strange but wonderful music. Sledgehammer has a fun video. His duet with Kate Bush on “Don’t Give Up” is hauntingly beautiful.

Considering this song is from his most commercially successful album, what never stops impressing me about PG is his continuous experimentation. He probably could have easily made another So style album after this, sold millions and laughed all the way to the bank, but that wouldn't be his style, so instead we have US, which is arguably his most personal album, and UP, which has some great songs but took well over a decade to come out.

Afro-Celt produced a CD-R that you could both listen to on a CD player, or on a computer you could use their samples to make your own songs. I remember playing with that for days on end. No one at the time realized how that would eventually merge with old-fashioned DJing to create modern music performance and DJing.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album was almost entirely Pete's conceptualization and after having a taste of that much control,he wasn't very interested in giving it back. And the other 4 lads weren't keen on essentially being Pete's back-up band if that was the way it was going to go. So he felt he had outgrown the constraints of being in a band and the band didn't do anything to dissuade him.

He has always involved different musical styles of the world into his music, this was not something that people did in the 1970's when he did his 1st solo album after leaving the band genesis. He is involved in UNICEF and did song about Steve Biko who was murdered in South Africa which is worth a listen. He performed it for Nelson Mandela after end of aparteid. I would suggest listening to red rain or solsbury hill next, great reaction

One of the most vivid statements for the power of music to join and heal. The way they face each other, they dance in unison (and focus their steps on meeting the earth rather than leaving it like Western dance), the multiple languages, and the pure joy in their expressions and communion…I hope they see this in 500 years and know we understood the assignment even if we didn’t complete it most of the time.

Peter Gabriel was a pioneering artist who brought 'World Music' to life. You were both right, his music had elements from many different cultural traditions. He was the artist who first stood against the Apartied in South Africa, he brought many artists together to raise awareness which ultimately brought an end to the Human Rights abuses. He wrote the soundtrack for the film 'The Last Temptation of Christ" For that project he explored the music traditions of the middle east. This man is a genius.

Lots of comments telling you that Peter Gabriel "was the former lead singer of Genesis", then failing to note that Genesis in the Gabriel era was one of the greatest bands, ever, with multiple fabulous songs and albums. They helped create the musical genre known as "progressive rock", which was quite popular in the very late '60's and up throught the late '70's, which looks like before your time. It's never really ever came back into popularity since then, although lots of musically-inclined kids grew up to form their own bands to compose and play progressive rock that received zero radio play and went unloved and unnoticed except by diehard prog fans like myself. Together, these second-generation bands are known as "neo-progressive", in part because they tend to incorporate a bit of the music that had obtained some level of poplularity during their young lives into their progressive compositions. The fun part is that these neo-progressive bands are, for the most part, completely unknown to younger people despite the fact that a lot of them are still touring, playing theater-size venues all over the world, to the coterie of prog fans who still carry that torch. Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, IQ, The Flower Kings, and many others have made tremendous music over the past several decades. You should check them out. Given the banality of what passes for music today, maybe prog is ready for a huge comeback.

This was during a period when several HUGE artists reached out to International artists to join with them and create music and tour. Gabriel has this African group, Paul Simon did African groups, Sting got some Middle Eastern artists to join him, etc. By doing this they also introduced us here in the Western world to new music styles and artists we would never have known. You need to check out more.

One of my favorite songs! With so much going on, it's easy to not get the lyrics, and they're beautiful. It does have an African influence: "It features Youssou N'Dour singing a part at the end of the song translated into his native Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God."

Before the year was out, I would see him performing it live at an Amnesty International concert at RFK, in Philly, where she was to get her doctorate. I saw him, not we. We were already history in the making, sorry to say. The song was like a pair of bookends, as that was also our last meeting. Freed from having to deal with me, she went on to teach at Harvard and Oxford, so it most not have been all that bad. You would do well to mine the vast catalog of Peter Gabriel tunes and performances, with or without Genesis. "Games Without Frontiers" might be a timely place to continue. I got to see him when he was with Genesis in they're very early days in Pennsylvania where I grew up and then again and Philadelphia at JFK. He's always put on a great show The secret garden is based I think more of African sounds and African bass sounds so that's why it's that drum kind of thing that you hear between his backup vocalist who is actually from Africa. It's amazing the whole tour was great not a bad song in the bunch.

The language they switched to midway into the song is Wolof. His drummer, Manu Katché and his good friend Youssou N'dour are from Senegal where Wolof is one of the main languages. Although, Papa Wemba is Congolese so he might have been singing some Congolese. Peter Gabriel has been a champion of world music and dance for decades, and was a strong voice in the fight to end apartheid.

@@kwanshiyin He’s a wonderful drummer, right up there with the best there is, and particularly adept at African rhythms that Peter Gabriel has adopted. His by-play with Tony Levin on bass gives the music such soul and vibrancy.

Those lighters in the audience were maybe the only positive remnant left over from the era of smoking tobacco. That tour was a fantastic show to be at. Those are all fantastic musicians and singers. I heard the motivation for this stage show was Gabriel trying to stay in shape as he aged. And you're right Asia. While he was interested in music from everywhere and almost invented worldbeat, this was his Africa phase. Those are African languages they're singing.

BTW, the female singer is Paula Cole, who has a degree in jazz singing and improvisation from Berklee College of Music in Boston (she comes from Rockport, MA) and she had a few hits of her own (Where Have All The Cowboys Gone, I Don't Want To Wait, I Believe In Love), but this tour (1993) was before she released her first album in 1994.

This is one of my all time favorite performances. Peter Gabriel is heavily influenced by African rhythms. The older gentleman singing is the late great Papa Wemba. He was a Congolese singer, musician and fashion icon who greatly influenced African music and culture.

The original album version of this song featured Youssou N'Dour from Senegal in West Africa. He is one of the biggest and most popular singers and musicians from Africa. He has an amazing range and the woman in this video sort of takes his place though the man in African dress next to her takes some of the parts too. I saw Peter in concert in 1986, the year this album, So, came out, and Youssou N'Dour and his band was the opening act and they were phenominal. Then Peter came on and played for 2 hours, and then for the encore, Youssou's entire band joined Peter's band on stage and played this and about 4 or 5 more songs. The concert was 4 hours long and was probably the best live show I've ever seen! Back then Peter still crowd surfed during the song 'Lay Your Hands on Me'. Pretty wild to see a star as big as him dive into the crowd and let people pass him around! And if you want another powerful song from him, try Biko. He wrote that in honor of the South African anti-apartheid activist, Steven Biko, who was beaten to death by SA police. 20,000 people attended his funeral, and made world news, and moved Peter to write the song. Thanks for listening and sharing. Keep going with more PG! Peace from SF

I've only had the privilege of seeing Peter Gabriel live three times: Twice for the "So" tour, and once for "Secret World", this tour. Each time was a revelation. He used to end concerts with "Biko" and then started ending concerts with this song. Both are amazing and both transport you to places you never realized you NEEDED to go. Live participation in this one leaves you in tears of joy and you KNOW that you and everyone else there experienced something you'll never forget.

The gentleman in the red cap, singing in an African language that escapes me for a moment is Youssou N'Dour. The great Senegalese singer, and one of the most well-known musicians in and from Africa. His body of work is great. Gabriel is a big proponent of World Music. Traveling the globe and working with musicians in every style he can find. Incidentally, the woman in the black dress singing is Paula Cole here. Her solo work is worth checking out as well.

BJ you summed up "World Music". To me, this is one of the best live performances on RU-vid, right up there with QUEEN live in Montreal. Papa Wemba is the guy that starts riffing in Senegalese(he was from Congo) . The woman is Paula Cole, who has a song or two of her own that you may know, but has seen way more success as a songwriter. I used to think this song was about falling in love, but, as I've gotten older, I think it has a bigger, spiritual meaning. Like someone searching for faith... Peace!

Peter launched Real World Records back in the late eighties, I think. It was an initiative to provide greater access to music from around the world, and greater audiences for artists who might not otherwise be heard. He’s also responsible for World Of Music And Dance (WOMAD), which is an annual music festival held in numerous countries, again focussed on as wide a range of music from different cultures as possible.
