The lead singer, Gary Brooker, just died about 10 days ago, so this is very timely, Devin. I've always loved this song! 50 years old and it's still fresh! - YES, it is a great slow dance song!! God bless! ❤💯
The original from 1967 was my favorite UNTIL I was blessed to hear Gary Brooker sing along with the Danish Symphonic Orchestra and Chorus. Absolutely glorious version. A sad note to add, Gary passed away at the age of 76 from cancer on February 19, 2022. He left a fabulous legacy of music for us to enjoy❤️
Another great performance of the Danish National Symphony is their rendition of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-enuOArEfqGo.html
When a song sounds just as good 50 years after it was first released should tell everybody something. One of the greatest songs ever written. It goes straight to your soul! Gary Booker died about a year ago! RIP!
Song is based on one of the Canterbury Tales. R.I.P. GARY BROOKER, This man had one of the greatest voices. Usually someone starts to lose their vocal range with age, but not Gary.
Thank goodness, always thought it was “Miller told his tale” referred to Chaucer’s Canterbury tales, Millers tale about all human frailties. But have been told over & over that theirs a white moth called a Miller to do with coke? Never made sense to me,line before is obviously about a coke spoon shaped like very small ladle, but to me that fits perfectly with”Millers tale”✊♥️🌹
I was young when I first heard this song. Little did I know I would go through my father's old 45 records that he brought from England when my parents moved to Canada, and that would be one of the records he had. My father gave me all of the old 45's about 15 years ago. I still listen to that song. He just passed away 6 months ago, and this song is a very emotional song for me. I will be forever grateful for that and cherish this record.
I get a lot of pleasure from watching the younger generations listening to this song for the first time. I just loved your reaction. You may know this by now, but I read somewhere that Gary Brooker not only composed and sang the original version, he also composed the orchestral and choir accompaniment in this version. Amazingly talented person. May he rest in peace, listening to choirs from on high.
Gary Brooker died at the age of 76. (R.I.P.) 02.19.2022 Cancer. A remarkable and unforgettable voice. I Love You, Gary. I Love Procol Harum. Forever. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
The first few bars of this original record, with that distinctive organ, comprise one of the most iconic, instantly recognizable songs of the 60s that can instantly transport me back to that time as if in a time machine. Always a favorite.
I'm sure you realize now it is NOT winter's. The combination of the orchestral arrangement with the iconic song creates something quite profound and moving.
Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.
Truly great performance by all concerned. I have seen procol harum 8 times and they are my all time favourites. Hard to believe I won't see him again there no doubt God has just booked the top of the bill for his concert in heaven
The song is about a one night stand or sexual escapade that ended bad. Gary Brooker reminds me of Ray Charles! I surpassed the half century mark last year. I can clearly remember that song playing on a 45. My mother loved this piece. She passed about almost a year ago. At her Memorial Service I pulled together an insane amount of pics. While the pics were showing Whiter shade of pale (this version) was playing. I turned around to see the reaction. It was a challenge to find a dry eye in the Sanctuary! Great videos my friend! Enjoy your holiday!
Dude, you have the best reactions. You seem like you feel every song as i did when i first heard these classics 40 years ago. And still feel them now🤘❤️
Great reaction, quickly bringing yourself up to speed. 1964 he was in a band the Paramount's, and when he sings Ray Charles or Perry Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" that powerful voice was embarking on a great musical journey he just got better, RIP, Gary Brooker, your music stays with us, a blessing! ❤️
You picked a wonderful song brought memories back to me. This is a beautiful song. Remembering that I would play this song over and over. Powerful song 👏❤️🎵🎶🥰
One of the best reactions to this song I have seen. Thank you. RIP Gary Brooker, Thank you for giving us over 55 years of amazing music. You will never be forgotten Sir.
Danish symphony orchestra joined Gary on this, amazing, best version ever, remember original, so I’m ancient, but can still appreciate music thank god😂✊♥️
This song has been on my playlist for a long long time and I listen to it at night and it helps me sleep. I got a lot of songs that help me sleep and this is one of my favorites
my first junior high school dance with a girl in 1968 never yes was very slow been playing this song for 50 years, written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387 and 1400, The Miller's Tale is one of 24 stories, RIP Mr. Garry Brookert,
Singing orchestra backup singers all were great. What a treat to hear that live. As mentioned by another viewer I also grew up with this in the 60’s. When in came over the new FM radio I blasted it. I love both versions. Thanks for showing it.
First released in May 1967, this song became part of the sound track of my first term at university that summer. It's one of the most iconic songs of the era. The lyrics are considered 'psychedelic rock' in their dream-like poeticism, but, according to Gary Brooker (the lead singer) in an interview, he said it's about a break up where she's leaving him with no real stated reason. She's pale with nerves when she tells him she's leaving, and when he doesn't accept there's no reason, she turns a whiter shade of pale. RIP Gary Brooker. For those of us who were listening to you from the beginning, you will forever be missed.
AMAZING ! Step 1 - Orchestra prelude Step 2 - Gary Brooker and orchestra Step 3 - Gary Brooker + orchestra + band (Procol Harum) + choir “A WHITER SHADE OF PALE” was released by Procol Harum in 1967 and it was their first single ❤ RIP Gary Brooker 1945 - 2022 *PROCOL HARUM is a latin expression that means "beyond these things"
This was "born" in 1967 when I was 15!!!! Spectacular year for music!!!💜💜💜💜🎵🎼🎶🥁🎸🎧🎹🎤🎙 Gary Brooker....the voice of many angels!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘 Bless you for this reaction!!! 🤘🤘
Have loved this song since the mid sixties. This has to be my favorite version, since this concert took place in my native Denmark. The castle where the concert took place is located close to where both my grandparents lived, have been by there many times as a child and young adult.
A very small peice of heaven indeed roams this earth. What an amazing group of God given talent was put together here for this iconic performance. Thank you Devin for the reaction video.
The song is actually called a whiter shade of pale Not a winter shade of pale and the singer on piano for procul harum is Gary Brooker who sadly passed away in february 2022.
one of the greatest songs ever written. fantastic , hit # 1 at the time in nearly every country of the world .. yes people had to be able to sing and play instruments before and during the 60's and 70's no auto tube, no gimmicks, no synthesizers, no half naked people dancing around ,,,,,and half the time the live performance where even better than the recordings ,,, just stand there with a mic and belt it out.
The song lyrics are cryptic becuase it is the rock equivalent of a surrealist painting. Many images and scenarious with pale faces. Going all the way back to the Millers Tale (1485?). Whose face would have been ghostly with flour dust, and who would have turned pale when he realised he had been betrayed, yet correctly, blamed himself. Gary Brooker sang it and composed the original music.
Lead singer Gary Brooker of PROCOL HAREM, "WHITER SHADE OF PALE"...This was a nice tribute to him, especially since he just passed away a few days ago. The song was released in 1967. You should give this a listen to. More... "CONQUISTADOR"..
You really want to react to "TIME HAS COME TODAY" - The Chamber Brothers - Album long version. It is an experience you will never forget. 4 black brothers with a white drummer created this ICONIC Masterpiece.
Unfortunately the lead singer just recently passed away. RIP Mr. Gary Brooker and thank you for that beautiful voice! They do another great song from this concert called " Conquistador " Another great tune from this band and oh the bravado. You'll love love it!
Ah, Devin! I always thought the same way as you; The wind up...the pitch...then he hits it outta the park! Such a sad love song, to be sure. Brooker was a brilliant musician in every way and he's sorely missed by his devotees.
While it's not supposed to be a reference to Chaucer, the "Miller's Tale" would be apt to shock a "lady". Sad to learn that Gary Brooker has passed. RIP.
