Freddie was having breakfast & the radio was on when "Ice Ice Baby" came on. He thought it was "Under Pressure" starting but then heard Vanilla Ice. He told them to turn it up. He had his attorney on the phone before he was done with his toast. Vanilla Ice arrogantly told the judge he added one strike to the cymbal which make it different. Really? Stealing one of the most famous bass lines ever? Personally, I hate that this brilliant song will forever be associated with him. Most honor people by asking permission & using a beat. Vanilla was disrespectful in my opinion.

Let's talk about Queen & David rather than Vanilla Ice because the song has an incredible story! This song came about from a from an evening in the Swiss Alps with a lot of wine & cocaine! David found out Queen was nearby at their recording studio & called them up to visit. They were sitting around playing other people's songs when David said "let's just write one". That famous baseline came first which they almost forgot how it went after they went to eat. Freddie & David recorded without hearing the other to see how they each interpreted the song, I believe - thus the two very distinct styles. Freddie added his scatting - David's more serious tone, etc. It was two icons doing what they do best. Production was a hot mess because that's where being two total Divas came out. Each wanted control over the songs production & final sound. Each were used to getting their way. As you can see they worked it out. Iconic song written in just one night. Incredible.
@poppad331
@poppad331 2 года назад
They worked it out, but sadly it caused a rift between the 2 divas. Although they made up many years later, it meant that they never got to perform it "live" together. The Live Aid concert in 1985 was the big chance to do it. I was there at Wembley and prayed they would, but sadly no. I love Queen, but more of a Bowie fan

David snuck into Freddie’s recording so that’s why it’s so concise
@miaschu8175
@miaschu8175 2 года назад
That makes sense of why this song is slightly disjointed. I thought that it was a deliberate artistic choice, in order to unsettle the listener, a little, to make them leave their comfort zone while taking in the deep lyrics.

Queen: Full Live Aid Concert. It's over 20 minutes long, but I have watched other reactions to it, and I promise you that you will not lose anyone clicking off during the whole reaction, despite its length. I actually watched this live on TV at a summer birthday sleepover when I was 12 years old. This Live Aid concert was held on July 13, 1985 and there were two concerts held for Live Aid on that same day: one in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA and the other London, England, UK. MTV had VJ hosts and cameras filming on both sides of the pond and they ran the concert live all day and night. MTV would switch from one concert to the other all day long: they'd show an artist playing in Philadelphia, then one in London, then back to Philly, then back to London ... all day, with interviews from the performers in between line-up changes. It was brilliant! This was back when MTV was at it's absolute best. Many bands and performers participated, including Queen. It was a benefit concert in aid of the famine in Ethiopia. Queen performed from Wembley Stadium in London, England and their performance is so legendary (considered the BEST performance of any performer at Live Aid) that a tagline is famously attached to it: "This is the only time in England's history that, for 20 minutes, the country was ruled by an entirely different Queen." * Watch the crowd! Especially during Radio Gaga. Freddie had them in the palm of his hand. Complete crowd control - pay attention at 5:49. CROWD. CONTROL!!! Here is their set list from that concert: Bohemian Rhapsody 0:24 Radio Gaga 2:40 ------> Fun Fact: Lady Gaga took her stage name from this song. Ay-Oh 6:47 (interaction with the crowd) Hammer to Fall 7:34 Crazy Little Thing Called Love 12:20 We Will Rock You 16:01 We Are The Champions 17:20 Another fun fact: Freddie Mercury was quite sick that day with a throat infection and was advised by his doctor not to perform the concert. He did anyway ... and wow, did he KILL it! Link to the reaction here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EjXetWK-Ur8.html&ab_channel=RU-vidTest Oh , and if you want to know of another rapper who used an old song for his beat (though he DID ask permission), the first person I thought of was Michael McDonald "I Keep Forgettin'." It was used by Warren G/Nate Dogg - Regulate Link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cjqOsYRQI0o.html&ab_channel=VegaFunk

David Bowie - to get a real feel for this artist, you need to look at a variety of his songs from different times. He was an artist in the real sense - creative and controversial. After listening to Space Oddity (1969), listen to Ashes to Ashes (1980) with its surreal video. Then Life on Mars? (1971) It has a beautiful sad tune, an amazing song. Then for a different incarnation of Bowie, listen to Ziggy Stardust (1972). Then Rebel Rebel (1974) for a real rock 'n' roll version of Bowie. Going on to Suffragette City (1972/1976) for something different. There are so many more to choose from: Changes, Heroes, The Jean Genie, Fame, Young Americans... So many more that you could fall down a rabbit hole discovering Bowie! You'll never get the definitive Bowie in one song because he was ever changing. He really is the Goblin King! (Yes, watch Labyrinth as well!)

Queen and Bowie were both recording albums in the same studio, ran into each other, exchanged niceties, asked what each other was doing, and so on. At the same time, Queen bassist, John Deacon, was fiddling around with that bassline. They all went out to dinner, came back, and Deacon had forgotten the bassline. The drummer had to remind him. From that bassline, worked out the song, "Under Pressure". So think of it as Queen, feat. David Bowie. The recording process turned into a hassle for both parties and they never worked together again, until.... Vanilla Ice took Deacon's bassline and used it for "Ice Ice Baby", BUT didn't give credit to Queen NOR paid any royalties. He even tried to claim it as his own in interviews! Queen and Bowie sued and easily won. Freddie died soon after and a tribute concert was held a few months after, where Bowie, and Annie Lennox, performed "Under Pressure" with the rest of Queen. This video is a mashup of the studio recording, a concert that Queen performed in 1986, and the tribute concert 6 years later, all edited together seamlessly.

Queen and David Bowie sued Vanilla Ice claiming that the bass line in "Ice Ice Baby" was a direct copy of "Under Pressure." Vanilla Ice argued that they weren't the same because he added an extra beat. The court ruled in Queen and Bowie's favor and Vanilla Ice had to pay an undisclosed sum.

But I have a question tho, did Vanilla Ice really stole the bass line from Queen or he just sampled like most of artists nowdays do?

@@joa0paul081 Out and out theft, imho. If "most artists" "sample" these days, is that not just proof they have no talent and have to resort to copying the work of genuine artists? The words "Vanilla Ice" and "artist" shouldn't be in the same book, let alone a sentence.

Freddie was clearly a formidable showman and vocalist. Bowie, on the other hand, was a musical visionary, always living in tomorrow, his discography is quite a ride. The music he produced whilst 'on his death bed' is extraordinary.

Vanilla Ice could only dream of being this great. He came to a party at my house once and left. He got mad because people didn’t fall all over him. I worked as a jock at a rock station and we had no idea who he was. He was from Highland Park area of Dallas. Rich part of town.

Yep, Vanilla grabbed Under Pressure....and now Queen and Bowie are listed as co-writers on Ice Ice Baby, as they should. When Roger sings Bowie's part in concert it is fantastic with Freddie and Adam - saw Q+AL in August 2019.

Queen - any of the live concerts. Love of my life from Montreal 1981, or Rock in Rio are especially awesome. Also his World domination badge aka the Live Aid performance. Dame David. The actual clip from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert which is him and Annie Lennox. If you can find it there is footage of Annie and David rehearsing with the rest of Queen and watching approvingly is a certain George Michael. Apart from his music there is his legendary flip from 1983 when he interrogated MTV during an interview. Also a serious interview with the formidable Jeremy Paxman, and while he has yet to grasp its significance, Bowie can see clearly how it will develop.

Check out “Life On Mars” original video by David Bowie. I enjoyed your reaction to Under Pressure. Always fun to watch people get surprised with hearing popular beats from their original songs 😉 . . , but yeah if you think it’s weird seeing Bowie go from Drummer boy to Under Pressure, well you’re gonna really find Bowie rather interesting when you dig deeper😁

Guys. What you are watching never actually occured. Yes, the 4 members of Queen plus David Bowie, jammed together one afternoon and wrote this song. Sadly they NEVER performed this song together in public. What you are watching was spliced/edited together from two concerts. Queen in 1986 at Wembley and Bowie from the Concert for Freddy after his death in 1991. You can watch both concerts separately. Bowie sung this with Annie Lennox and Annie was edited out and Bowie combined with Queen. Brilliant editing. Cheers.

I’m sure many more knowledgeable viewers mentioned that both Freddy and David were Divas/Queens. “Just one year of love” is a beautiful ballad and was used on the soundtrack of HIGHLANDER 2 movie. Actually the entire soundtrack is Queen. There are just so many good songs like “I want to break free” and “Another one bites the dust” to name a few. Keep great music alive, take care and God bless 🙏
