In remembrance of John Lennon, who would have been 82 today, I'm reacting to Life Is Real (Song For Lennon) by Queen, taken from the Hot Space album in 1982.
As a massive Beatles and John Lennon fan as well as a massive Queen and Freddie Mercury fan this song was a must listen to for me and let me tell you, I can't believe what I just heard!!

Freddie paid tribute to Johhn Lennon with this song the way he paid tribute to Elvis with Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Freddie had huge respect for them both. It's a pity nobody has wrote a song for Freddie.

It’s like in the style of John Lennon but Freddie is talking about his own trials with fame and life. The lyrics are a brilliant blend of the two-Freddie wrote, “Life Is Real” I believe. What a genius (both men). And Queen, such a respectful group.

There are also several different Beatles/Queen songs : Roger made a cover version of "Working Class Hero", Queen covered "Imagine" a couple of times live right after Lennon's death (they did it again as Queen + Paul Rodgers much later), Freddie sang "Rain" in 1969, when he was the singer of the band called Ibex,....

What a FANTASTIC song choice, Doe, thank you! There is also (bootleg but good quality) audio of Queen performing this song at two different venues when they were touring in The States! AND… There’s (I think it’s just) audio of Queen performing “Imagine” at Wembley Stadium as a tribute to Lennon, the day after he was killed... which is REEAALLY touching, of course!🫶

It was an amazing reaction! I am surprised you never heard this song before, but it was obvious, that it was a unique experience for you. I had a kind of similar feeling when I heard this song for the first time when 'Hot Space' was released - it made me cry. Another great reaction. I knew you'd love this Doe. This song always gives me mixed feelings. In a way, I wish it had never been written., because that would mean that John was still with us. I remember when he was taken from us. I was only a kid, but I remember the HUGE shock I felt as if it was yesterday. It's no surprise that a band like Queen would pay tribute to him with this real gem of a song. John and the Beatles were a massive influence on almost everyone who immediately followed them, and this certainly included Queen. There will never be anyone who compares to the Beatles, but, IMO, Queen in the 70s were the closest we ever got. But, to this day, it makes me sad thinking that a wonderful musician and human being like John, who still had so, so much to offer us all, could be taken so young and so senselessly. Freddie and the boys have done a lovely tribute here - but I'd still rather have John back with us (and Freddie too). It cheers me up a bit to imagine them jamming together on the other side with some of the other greats that we lost too soon.

Freddie wrote “Life Is Real” as a tribute to John Lennon, who was murdered in December of 1980. The instrumentals were meant to capture the essence of John’s work, with a melancholy, light piano arrangement. “I basically write the tune. I write the song around the melody most of the time. Sometimes a lyric will get me started. ‘Life Is Real’ was one of those, because the words came first. I just really got into it, pages after pages, all kinds of words. Then I just put it to a song. Maybe you already know but I have the feeling to tell you another conection with Queen and the Beatles, well, sort of. Paul McCartney wrote "Once upon a long ago" for him and Freddie as a duet but Freddie was too busy and lots of time very tired (it was 1987, you know) So Paul recorded himself. I loved that song when it came out and wish Freddie was on it.

Freddie is such a GENIUS… and he actually downplayed his lyric-writing abilities! (He said “I think my melodies are better than my lyrics”). Well, GENIUS is GENIUS, so maybe it’s a “draw”, Freddie!🥰 …I saw an interview clip w Fred recently where he was asked who he wished he could meet and talk to (living or dead)… and he said John Lennon.

You are from the same Lennon influenced (and Queen fan) world as Rory Reacts on RU-vid - you could be pals. I only ever felt the caustic sarcasm of Lennon amidst any wonders he penned...however, learning if the loneliness/anxiety pangs of his life have altered that a bit. I do believe Queen sang IMAGINE live at the time of his death, though I have not seen/heard it.

The greatest bands ever were The Beatles and The Beach Boys as far as songwriting composition goes and I would say Queen is also up there too. Brian Wilson was the genius behind The Beach Boys and it was him listening to Rubber Soul that got him first feeling in competition with The Beatles. From there on they were both chasing each other up a never ending spiral of brilliance with Revolver, Pet Sounds and SGT Peppers ect.

There is a voice you may be unaware of. Robin Zander of Cheap Trick. Not only has Cheap Trick been referred to as America's Beatles, they have performed many Beatles so gs live over the years, recorded a few, and have a DVD performing the entire Sgt Pepper album plus Abbey Road medley. You should listen to their song The Miracle. You think it's Lennon. Also the title track of their latest album Another World. And they have more songs through the years that are Beatlesque.

Another fun fact: on the same album, HOT SPACE, there's another song called "Calling All Girls" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2TnjmIMyG1M.html that is Freddie as a prisoner in a lab and he has a poster of John Lennon on the wall that he kneels down and prays to, while singing about spreading the message of love... this is a deep cut most people don't even recognize as Queen and have probably never seen even before... It's not really about John being honest (just famous people on the whole) its one of the better tunes off Hot Space played on a couple of legs on the 82 tour and then forgotten about. Would have been interesting if the original opening line would have been kept in .... some other type of stains on the pillow I'm sure you can use your imagination lol, ok a clue 3 letters in the word.

John was an amazing song writer and wrote from his point of view , Freddie was the better singer hence why he could make certain phrases sound like John , there are a few versions of Freddie singing imagine knocking about but the sound quality is poor , i too love John Lennon but I'm biased in regards to Freddie ,
