The "La Bamba" you listened to was both from the movie AND was sung by the group Los Lobos. It wasn't actually Ritchie singing. And it's Valens with a short "a", just like Valenzuela. So, you are going to have to find an actual recording of Ritchie singing "La Bamba". Also listen to "Donna".

Ritchie Valens was only 17 when he died & had only released one album (although he was working on his 2nd one). One often wonders what kind of music legacy he would've had if he had lived to an old age. I would suggest that you also listen to his hits "Donna" (which was about his first love) and "La Bamba" (the version you listened to was by the band Los Lobos for the movie, not Ritchie) as well as "Bluebirds Over the Mountain", "In a Turkish Town", "My Darling Is Gone", "Oooh My Head", "Framed" & "We Belong Together". Some of these songs are from his "official" album & others were rough takes for his upcoming album, but all showcase his phenomenal talent.

What is stunning about Richie Valens was that he was 17 when he died. He had probably just turned 17 when he shot this. He was the first of (sadly very few) hispanic rockers. Again, though -- I love that you guys did this today. Other little facts you may not have seen when reading about this Winter Dance Party tour: As you noticed on the tour poster, another headliner on that tour was Dion DiMucci (of Dion and the Belmonts, which is another great group you should react to if you haven't already), and Dion later talked about how he won a coin toss to take the plane to the next gig instead of the bus, but then he found out it was going to cost $36, and decided he didn't want to spend that money, so he said gave up his seat to Buddy (there were only 4 seats on the plane). Waylon Jennings also gave up his seat to the Big Bopper, who was dealing with the flu and didn't want to suffer a long bus ride in the cold. On the next gig in Fargo, North Dakota, after the crash, other artists took their place, including a 15-year-old singer named Bobby Vee, who, because of that performance, suddenly had a career in music -- and Bobby Vee later went on to have a half-dozen gold records. So as "the music died", some music was, in a strange way, actually born out of that tragedy.
@jspettifer
@jspettifer 2 года назад
Waylon didn’t talk about it for so many years. Buddy found out that he wasn’t coming on the plane and joked to him “I hope your damn bus freezes again” and Waylon responded “Well I hope your plane crashes” The statement haunted him for so many years.

Yes it was shocking to lose these artists all in the same day. 63 years ago I walked into my house after hanging out with my friends and could see my mother was visibly upset when she said to me "I just heard on the radio that Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper all died in an airplane crash a few hours ago.". That flyer you saw at the end of the video is actually advertising the concert they all played at on that fateful night. The plane crash happened shortly after that show. Big Bopper (JP Richardson) was 28, Buddy Holly, 22, & Ritchie, only 17, & he'd already had several hits. Big Bopper had the one hit, but Buddy was a huge influence & innovator in the newly-emerging rock-n-roll era. Almost every 60s group was in some way influenced by the sounds & many, many songs Buddy created.

I visit his grave every chance I get, located San Fernando Mission Cemetery (Mission Hills, CA--very near his home in Pacoima). "Two years prior to his death when he was a 15-year-old student at Pacoima Junior High School there was a plane crash. At the time of the disaster he was not at school that day because he was attending the funeral of his grandfather." '"Despite not being at school when the mid-air collision happened, Ritchie Valens developed an intense fear of flying because of this plane crash. By 1957, Ritchie would bring his guitar out on the playground while his fellow students would gather around him and listen. Valens was convinced that if he had been there that day, he would have been one of the victims of the 1957 mid-air collision. • Donna Fox, the subject of Ritchie’s hit song “Donna,” recalled that Ritchie “would have nightmares about that [flying]. He just had a horrible fear of small planes, and planes in general. He indicated that he would never fly. He just would never fly.”'

EDIT: song release date 1987. Thanks, @lonnie fuller The song in the movie was done by Los Lobos in 1987. So that's a high quality modern recording, and modern recordings contain frequencies that older recordings simply lack, due to the equipment of the time. I think that may be part of what you're picking up on when you say his voice is clearer and higher here. The human voice (especially tenors like him) is right in the frequency range that stands out in these old recordings. But I also think you're right about the timbre of Ritchie Valens' voice being higher than that of Cesar Rosas, lead singer for Los Lobos. Good catch! Hey, you guys should do Los Lobos. Los Lobos is an amazingly talented band from East LA and should be added to a future episode. I say do one of their earliest songs Will the wolf survive. Another note, Buddy Holly’s guitar player lost out on taking that flight to Richie. That guitar player is the legendary Waylon Jennings. He’s part of outlaw country like Willie Nelson.

Ritchie Valens had only been in the music business for 7 months when he died at the age of 17, he dropped out of high school to pursue his music career. We Belong Together is another good song to listen to if you want to hear more from him.

A bit of history regarding "The Day the Music Died". Apart from the tragedy of losing these three performers, a few other things happened in 1959 that would kind of sink the popularity of Rock n Roll. Elvis Presley was drafted into the army and spent a few years out of the limelight and not making music. Little Richard gave up music for a bit (he got tired of being cheated by the record companies) and went into the ministry. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin, and his career took a sudden dive when the general public realized their relationship. A lot of big names were suddenly NOT making the music they had been, and Rock n Roll went into this state of Limbo until the Beatles arrived in America in 1964. And the first big domino in all of that was the crash of this little plane in a frozen Iowa field.
@vinnygi

Well said. It led to four years of mostly bland boy singer garbage until The Beatles came along and revitalized music making music largely inspired by these very people.

I heard or read somewhere that Don Mclean that sings the song American Pie put that line that said the day the music died that line was based off of Ritchie and the others that died in the plane crash

Yep. You still had some big names, like the Everly Brothers, still cranking out the same music they had been, but it wasn't enough of them left. The record companies went into a panicked schizophrenia. Some were hell bent to take music back to the swing heyday 10 years prior. Some went for a swing/rock hybrid. Others looked for people who sounded like Elvis or Buddy Holly. Today we would refer to the era as "market researched". For every one of the old school, innovative rockers still making music, you had 10 new people who were formulaic, sanitized imitators putting out canned, bland music. There were a few gems, but a lot of rocks. Until....

Hey Jay and Amber... love you both and keep doing what you're doing. Great work! So, since you two are going old school, I thought I'd drop one on you. The song is called Sh-Boom. It's considered the FIRST rock and roll song. Now, here's the weird part... it was originally done by an all black vocal group called The Chords... and it was fantastic! But a month after it was released, it was redone by a group called the Crew Cuts... who would take songs from black groups and "make it more palatable" to a white audience. I think the Crew Cuts' version is weak... and The Chords version superior. Anyways... might be good for a show or two comparing them.

@@davidrobinson3716 I couldn`t agree more! There are a few films that i`d love to see them react to and I feel would give them a deeper insight and some more knowledge into the artists they react to... "La Bamba" would be one, "What`s Love Got To Do With It" with Angela Bassett would be another...there`s actually quite a few autobiographical movies out there that are well worth the watch, I found a made for TV movie a while ago about Meatloaf that was also a really good watch, released in 2000...

His last name was actually Richard Steven Valenzuela. His manager thought he’d sell better if he didn’t sound so Hispanic so he dropped the UELA from Ritchie’s last name. So you pronounce it the same as Valenzuela but without the uela. Also, it is NOT Ritchie Valens’ voice in the movie La Bamba. All of Ritchie Valens' songs were performed by Los Lobos, whom the Valenzuela family personally requested be involved in the film. They are from East LA. They have a cameo in the film performing in the brothel ballroom in Tijuana. When their plane crashed, Ritchie was 3 months and 10 days short of his 18th birthday. J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson was 28, and Buddy Holly was only 22. The pilot was only 21 and not very experienced. He decided it would be ok to fly in freezing, snow blizzard conditions. Ice formed on the wings which prevented it from being able to stay in the air and they crashed less than 5 miles from the airport near Clear Lake, Iowa. The Big Bopper created the nickname Big Bopper from a dance the kids were doing called The Bop and he was a BIG guy.

Funny you mention running the hand through the side of the hair… Tonight watching the Olympic ice skating (couples dance) the Japanese couple skated to an Elvis song. They were dressed in 50’s style with hair to match. The guy kept running his hand over the side of his hair. 😄 Also if you remember the tv show Happy Days, the Fonz would comb his hair like that too. Or check out the song by Edd “Kookie” Byrnes and Connie Stevens, “Kookie Lend Me Your Comb”. What a trip down memory lane this has been.

Speaking of Ritchie Valens whose birth name is Richard Valenzuela almost did not have to go on that infamous flight in 1959, 63 years ago today. But tour bus had engine troubles. That's when Buddy Holly chartered plane to continue next stop on their tour. Ritchie gotten very ill from I believed he had the flu. Ritchie won coin toss to see who gets a seat on the plane. Other death, Big Bopper also gotten sick too with the flu. He gotten the seat from Holly's guitarist and then radio DJ who became Country Legend in music, Waylon Jennings. I just wondered if both Holly and Valens survived the crash, new music from them. Big Bopper probably do new music too plus hosting shows too because he had voice for hosting too.

Ritchie Valens was only 17 when he died in the plane crash... he had only recorded a handful of songs in the studio and released a few singles before his untimely passing. There is very little film footage of Ritchie Valens - this clip was from a movie he made an appearance in... he never got the chance to be on TV like Buddy Holly. His ballad 'Donna' was a huge hit back in the day...

This woman just laid it out. We really are that thick. That actually made me think, I worked a convention like 12 years ago, several celebs attended, one was a former model, drop dead beautiful. I talked with her for a few minutes and sat, smitten, just like every other guy - she's a stunner. Next con i worked i was in the hotel lobby, standing in line to check in. Suddenly I hear my name shouted out, turned and there she was, running up to me with a big smile and her arms open and gives me a huge hug!!! Every other male present was staring at me with eyes bugging out - I was, truly, stunned. It was the most wonderful moment of my entire life. ...she... wasn't flirting with me was she?!? 🤔😳
