This was from their 5th studio album in 1975. Originally a slower, dreamier track, they decided to up the tempo to fit in with new wave music. Thanks goodness they did. It's bass line and groove gave them a number 2 hit. Brian Ferry's vocals are brilliant and the horn section grabs your attention. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Alison for a super memory. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Crazy fact, he was initially recommended to Jimmy page to be the new vocalist for the yardbird's (led Zeppelin). Can you imagine that! I think Plant with Zep and Ferry with Roxy Music are both better fits.

Roxy Music as superheroes - great stuff! In reading about punk, I've learned that seeing Roxy Music for the first time had a dramatic effect on a lot of people, similar to seeing the Sex Pistols for the first time. For Roxy, their first appearance on TOTP was a revelation for the whole country (UK), and is available on RU-vid (the song is Virginia Plain). Also, Roxy Music and David Bowie were the only "old-timey" music punks could stand or condone, and both had a large influence on punk rock.

Saw Roxy Music back in the 70's. Thanks to my friend who was always up to the latest "left of center" music. Mostly British Rock of the time. Thanks for reporting on this song from the after point of view. Have you done anything on 'The Tubes'? 'What do you want from life', was a bigger hit for them.

The band was a huge impact on the so called New Romantic movement of late 70's early 80's and bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet etc. especially on the visual, modern glamorous image but also musically. Jamiroquai has done a live cover on this and Grace Jones did this on her album "Island Life".

you mentioned Brian Eno at the end and he and David Byrne became good friends and did a lot of work together and it's all just fantastic. you know it's very involved with a lot of talking head stuff especially the Life During Wartime album. I strongly urge you to try Prairie Rose from there iconic Country Life album with the two ladies lying in grass and most of the albums that were released made it a bit less racy let's say. but I and really I think thousands and thousands of copies are out there if not more have the original release where are these women are not only scantily clad they pretty much have nothing on but it's artistically a fantastic photo! also if you look at the cover of my favorite album of theirs called siren which I think came right after Country Life, that is Jerry hill? I can't remember her name she was that amazing supermodel that was married to Mick Jagger for quite a while. that's her on the cover of it with that blue background and she's crouching like a siren on this boulder with ocean waves crashing across it. it's great. Prairie Rose is a total banger though. but then again every single song on that album is fantastic. but then again I say that about every album of there's from the first one through siren. and then I don't like Avalon as much but it is beautiful and I certainly never mind hearing it. but a lot of people only know that one and that's how they think of Roxy Music when that was just a very late effort that was very different from a lot of their other stuff and way more polished. better work in and of itself.

Thanks a lot . Huge and very inventive band. Bryan Ferry is an absolute icon for four decades. A bunch of their songs or of Bryan's solo records have a mesmerizing effect on me, so can't help listening to them twice in a row and especially : "Will you love me tomorrow", "I put a spell on you", "All I want is you", " Dance away", "Over you", "Avalon", "More than this", "Jalous guy" (so better than Lennon's original), "Slave to love", "A fool for love", " Don't stop the dance", "Smog gets in your eyes" ", etc.

roxy music is one of the most influential bands of the '70s and early '80s, especially the new romantic and 2nd british wave movements of the late '70s through mid-'80s. roxy's early work was highly experimental, kinda art nouveau, pushing the envelope of pop music. "love is the drug" was the start of their more melodic, catchy sound from their album SIREN that would continue with MANIFESTO, FLESH + BLOOD and evolve to their masterpiece and final studio album AVALON from 1982. these are my other favourites: "virginia plain" "a hard rain's a gonna fall" "same old scene" "oh yeah" "more than this" "take a chance with me" and bryan ferry's solo masterwork "slave to love" any or all of these are DEFINITELY worth a reaction, harri! cheers! 😊 also: the model on the album cover is jerry hall who was dating bryan ferry at the time. she would soon leave bryan to be with mick jagger and so on and so on lol.
