Mick Hucknall has the proverbial "tear in his voice," which gives it that extra punch in the emotional gut. This is an incredible, beautifully crafted song. A classic for all times.
You have now discovered Simply Red and the incomparable Mick Hucknall! Unbelievable group of musicians and the smoothest of vocals from Mick. He has been overlooked and underrated for years in the states. They are fantastic! Every song is truly unforgettable.
My mother died April of that year and that summer when this song came out truly I had such a and identification with it and every time I hear it it always takes me back to the summer of 86 and how heavy my heart was during that period Of mourning
I just love your reactions! Your positivity!! Your channel is becoming my happy place. So fun to stroll down memory lane with someone who loves the music.
I am finding a renewed love for the 80s that I didn't know I lost. For me, I was in my teens at the time and I was really into music BUT as an adult and through these reactions, I have a renewed appreciation for the actual voices and instruments - the talent. Mind you, I ALWAYS loved Duran Duran's John Taylor with that bass lol
You should listen to "stars" "gonna do the right thing" "something got me started" "sunrise" "fairground" all great Simply Red songs with the fantastic mighty vocals of Mick Hucknall. Been a fan since the mid 1980's when I saw them live for the first time. Fantastic band
Yes, and the thing about it is... after watching him later on in years, he could still hit every single note, and sang the song I heard exactly the way it was done originally. Other artists come back and have changed words or intonations as they change in life. Ol' Mick is a rarity, held onto his voice and legacy.
@@hudsonsteele1674 They remain my favourite band. The standard and integrity of Mick Hucknall's voice and his music has enabled him to maintain full credibility with Simply Red and maintain a career and fan base that appreciate great music in 2020
@@hudsonsteele1674 Speaking of still hitting every note years later have you or Linzi heard the stripped down version of Bronski Beat Small town boy done in 2014 ? I think you and Javon would love it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CNhLOfUPHa8.html
Money's too tight and for your babies are a couple of really good ones too. I remember hearing a lot of simply red songs when I was young and loved their music but didn't know their name till many years later. Holding back and moneys too tight are my favs
Great song, always reminds me of the fools’n horses episode where Rodney marries Casandra and its played quietly in the background at their wedding reception above the nags head, right at the end of that scene as just Del and Rodney are left at the end and Del sort of realises as he ends up on his own standing there, that this really is the end of an era of it just being ‘the boys’, and that his younger bruv is moving on. It not only fits the scene beautifully, but it was a new and current song at the time of the episode on the late 80’s and the show and the song remind me what a decade, what a series, what a song, what a voice, what an artist, what nostalgia, what memories of being 8 years old. I recommend ‘stars’ and ‘for your babies’ by simply red, but look up the meaning behind the second song first to appreciate what a lyrical masterpiece it is, it can’t fail to bring a tear to a parents eye... especially one like me who no longer sees his ‘babies’
I've said it before and I'll say it again. This music trip you are on covers my era. And though I been down these roads many times, Im still loving joining the musical journey you are on.
I love watching his reactions to the music that I grew up with. I was a young woman when this song came out. I am having my 53rd trip around the sun starting today. Simply Red was my go to for rainy days and traveling between Houston and East Texas.
@@katjo71367 Stephanie, so many are looking backwards and dusting off our gold. It says everything about the largely garbage that passes for popular music currently. Suits me fine though to watch these kids reacting to our amazing music which they may never have known existed. The looks on their faces as they discover treasure after treasure is worth the time investment. Time well spent for me.
A more wrong comment ever at best George Michael average..Mick Hucknall an acceptable voice ..... you need to widen your ears you can start with David Lasley move onto Bobby Caldwell ... Tom Jones .....Boz Scaggs .......Joe cocker Robert Palmer etc etc those two don’t come in top ten
You obviously forgot about Freddie Mercury 😉 Technically not a soul voice but by far one of the best male voices of all time! A few of his songs were pretty soulful in their own way though.
The song is thought to be inspired by Mick's family and upbringing. His mother left the family when he was just three. It was this upheaval that inspired him to write the song. The lyrics "Strangled by the wishes of pater (father), hoping for the arms of mater (mother)" particularly reflect this.
Manchester Music at it's finest. One of the greatest songs to be produced from the home of UK music. Don't know where you are getting all these great tracks from Jayvee but it's making me feel like you grew up around me. Love it
His voice is still as good now. Saw him in concert in my home town a few years ago.....25 years of "stars"..... crowd consisted of all ages, from the very young to the not so young....pure magic!!!! 😊😊
I remember being a little boy in the 80s and listening to this with my mum on the radio and thinking it was a black woman singing. Then top of the pops one Saturday night I was blown away that it was a white guy wearing a flat cap, then he took his cap off and blew me away again when all this long ginger curly hair came falling out! He looked as far from what I imagined as you could get! Me and my mum still put this on the same old record player when I go visit! Great song, loved the 80s.
The awesome mick hucknall! Their discography is massive, lovely memory saw them live about 25 years ago his voice is as good live -a rare thing Check out “money’s too tight to mention “ one of their best, he grew up wanting to sing like Aretha and the other soul divas that’s why he has such a different voice, they were a band, but were named after Mick’s mass of curly hair
I loved this song anyway, but I was watching something recently and they said Mick wrote this about his mum who left years before. He was brought up by his dad. So emotional.
Jay in my days I waited patiently to hear THIS song. It just touches your soul. You feel his pain & want to cry with him. Glad your Enjoying it. Stay safe
Love this choice, they are a late night, wine sipping band that I like to listen to when I'm chilling! Love Mick's smooth sound. Put it on the chill playlist! Peace out!
This song is a great favourite of mine, Mick Hucknel is a fantastic vocalist and the band are great. I once saw them live just before they retired and they were just as brilliant live, and I rang one of my sisters just so she could hear this song. I'm so glad you liked it Jayvee, your reactions tell how much you enjoy a record by your movements. Take care and stay safe please my friends, love and hugs to you all Mary-Ellen UK
I'm jealous! I lived in Seattle and saw so many great bands. Simple Red I always keep an eye on their touring but never got the chance. I'm happy they are great live as well! 💞✌
Did you ever see Jimmy Sommerville perform ? I would love to have seen him doing this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CNhLOfUPHa8.html
Few songs make me cry, but this one does it everytime. I have always unabashedly loved simply red! Did you know Mick Hucknall was with Catherine zeta Jones for quite a while!?!?
Saw them in San Diego in 1986. Mick Hucknall’s charisma on stage is incredible! The tickets were free and I didn’t have high expectations. I became a huge fan!
A fellow redhead. Me and my sisters grew up listening to simply red, pink Floyd ub40 etc. You can't beat the music you grew up listening to in the 80's
WOW I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THIS THIS SONG, A LOT TO SAY! THANK YOU FOR HOSTING! Song about parents, Pater-Dad -- Mater is Mom. She left him when he was 3 years & did not return. God is here forever!
Hi J, have you ever saw this guy in a Live Performance ? well let me tell you ,He gives you it just like you hear it on the recording and more and He gives you everything with full energy ,He is a Giant of a Singer ,Bless his Heart .
There is a live version of this done just a few years ago. The singer is then in his mid fifties or better. His voice sounds so close to how it did many years ago. Kind of amazing.
Hey Mike - I agree. Have you ever heard Bronski Beat singer redoing Small town boy years later ? It also sounds better - check it out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CNhLOfUPHa8.html
Seems like you got the song that brings out sad memories with this song. So many sad comments on this thread. Life is full of sadness too. This song exemplifies such pain in his voice. It just makes you remember such sadness...
I have closed my eyes and faded off to into the inky darkness of sleep listening to this song and Sade as sleep is my only relief from my immune system ripping my nerves apart. I keep holding on... I love seeing this younger generation discover "my" generations music...
Boyzone: *"Picture of You" *"No Matter What" *"Words" *"All That I Need" Savage Garden: *"Truly Madly Deeply" *"I Knew I Loved You" *"I Want You" *"To The Moon And Back"
This was the first album I ever bought, in 1982, at the age of 11-12 and I played it to death, very jazzy album. So original. Went quite mainstream after that, but still produced a lot of great songs. Some of their songs became the biggest selling records across the whole of Europe, during the eighties. This single actually did very well in America.
The first album I ever purchased (as a cassette) lol. The video is great - Whitby is one of my favourite places in the UK. I've also seen Simply Red in Concert twice - 1987 and 2003 and his voice was amazing at both.
