Sohyang, to me, is simply the best singer on the planet. I am from the US and I have loved Whitney, Mariah, Eva Cassidy and many more but she has moved to the top of my list. She has it all, range, power, vocal agility, and maybe most importantly, she imparts incredible emotion every time she sings. Her rendition of I Have Nothing (her in a blue dress) is amazing, Lean On Me (with Michael Bolton in the audience), You Raise Me Up, and Misty (from the Begin Again Korean concerts--something completely light and beautiful), The Power Of Love, I'll Be There, and so many more, are all out of this world. Her masterclass is considered Everyone (sung in both Korean and English), for her ability to endure and triumph through the very challenging song. Many of her Korean songs will bring tears to one's eyes for her emotive rendering. You are now part of the very lucky growing club who knows of Kim So Hyang, a South Korean vocal monster/angel!
Definitely do Airirang next. It's a song that's almost like a national anthem for Korea, it's a deep and meaningful song about the farewell of a loved one and many tie it to the sudden and complete loss of family members and loved ones when Korea was divided.

I was excited to see this reaction post and I knew that she would rock your world. She is everything you said and more. As others will mention, she is a cancer survivor and has dedicated her life to sharing her talents with the only goal being to lift the downhearted and bring hope and love to the world. She participated in a concert yesterday and of course i didn’t know about it :-( but i looked it up and found out the cost of admission was 1000 won which is about what you voluntarily pay to enter the metropolitan museum in NY city. In my late 50s, grew up on Zep, Floyd, etc...never in my life did I expect that the best female voice I'd ever hear would turn out to be an anointed angel from S Korea. And it's no coincidence that she gets you almost 8k views in less than 24hrs. The most famous unfamous woman on earth. Im not really religious but she's proof some higher power creates certain anointed souls. You have to do Everyone. Best performance I've EVER heard.

She is an independent artist due to her faith and her health as a cancer survivor. They know about her, she tuned down Sony in 2020 as she has turned them all down. She is also a novelist and an all around inspiration. This is but one of her masterpieces.

Actually Bridge over troubled water is one of the challenges during the Korean TV Show-Immortal song. And this show was almost Sohyang's debut to the broadcast(including Arirang Alone). Before this "Immortal Song" TV show, she was not known to the people. (Even Korean didn't know her name) XD Sohyang is cancer survivor and devoted christian. So before this great debut only few people noticed her on Sunday at the church. (no joke) So if you wanna dig this rabbit hole, you should try "Arirang Alone"-Korean traditional national Anthem which is beautifully interpreted by Sohyang herself. (Immortal Song TV show) "Everyone"-Most loved Korean folk song. But Sohyang changed this song's genre to gospel and put some her own English lyrics there. (Immortal Song TV show) "You raise me up"-Because of Sohyang's weak immune system(She is a cancer survivor), she had caught pneumonia for 8times during the Immortal song series. After this show she considered to retire becasue of her health condition. She had to stop her all official career. "I will always love you"-Beautiful rendition from Sohyang. After 2 years of long break, She came back with the "Begin Again" TV show. It supposed to be a travel abroad concert but because of COVID, she only can do local concert here in Korea. She does speak English reasonably well. Her pronunciation is exceptional. All the consonants are there. In addition to her impeccable technique and vocal acrobatics, she always sings with so much passion and the audience can feel it.

SoHyang sings with such passion and intention to comfort and uplift others. We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. Korean is her first language but she speaks pretty good English so she doesn’t have an obvious Asian accent when singing in English. Not even the great man himself, Dimash, can manage that particular feat. I am so glad that as you have acquainted yourself with the ‘king’ of vocals, Dimash, you have finally discovered the lady referred to by many as his ‘queen’. She can sing literally any genre, rock, pop, blues/jazz, the big power ballads (wait til you see how she tackles ms.Houston) &!there are many video’s on RU-vid to support this, you can even see her rapping!! but her heart is in gospel & she often incorporates elements of gospel in to her arrangements of covers of already famous songs which aren’t usually associated with that genre. She herself is responsible for the arrangement of all songs she performs & you will best see this when you watch her version of a song that you are already familiar with. I am surprised that you are not familiar with the song ‘bridge over troubled water’ as it is one of the greatest songs ever written & has become a classic, written & performed by Simon & Garfunkel in the 70’s. You are right about that big voice coming from that small woman because she is so petite, she’s barely 5’ tall so that should give you some idea of just how tiny she is. Like many other people who hear her for the first time, you’re probably wondering how you’ve never heard her before, surely with pipes like that she should be a star all over the world, which I think is is a fair question, the answer is quite simple, she’s not a universal megastar because fame & fortune are not what drives this living angel on earth. All the big record companies have tried to sign her on numerous occasions, only to be turned down, instead choosing to stay ‘free’ & able to go at her own pace & follow her heart. She sings to bring comfort to those experiencing difficult times ( I really advise you to read her back story which will help explain why she feels as she does). You may come across viewers who may try to put you off Sohyang & try & convince you that she can’t sing & because she has the ability to take her belting up really high, they say that she can only scream but these people, or a large majority of these people seem to be supporters of another female vocalist, who is also excellent & in my opinion 2nd only to Sohyang when it comes to vocals but I can only think that it is jealousy, how else can you explain that attitude, by all means say you don’t like her singing if that’s how you feel but don’t say horrible things about her voice when they simply aren’t true. I think most people that appreciate good music, like yourself, are intelligent enough to make their own minds up about how good she is/isn’t, but even if you’re not drawn to the kind of music she performs, you can’t deny her perfect vocal technique & the thing that really separates Sohyang from other singers, het ability to tell a story & portray emotion through a song. I am sure you’ll be recommended some of her songs on Korean, in particular ‘Arirang alone’ but don’t ever be put off these songs because even though watching on Vimeo is usually accompanied by eng subs, you’ll soon realise that you don’t even need to have the translation because somehow, this beautiful lady has the ability to still make you ‘feel’, even when you have no idea what the lyrics are. Many people have mentioned how they’ve gone to the trouble of making sure they have the eng subs yet when she actually performs, she is so captivating that they don’t even look at the subs because they can’t take their eyes off her. These thing will become clearer to you the more you listen to her because it’s hard to describe, it’s like magic, the way she makes you feel & the only way to really ‘get it’ is to experience it for yourself. Great reaction. My wife is really dull person. No hobby, no interest in music, no interest in any thing. By the way, one day I played the song, Arirang alone by Sohyang in my car going somewhere with her. It was the first time for her hearing Sohyang. After hearing that song, she told me "I cried".

I subscribed to your channel the first day you found PTX. I am a Pentaholic and I LOVE Sohyang. She has a beautiful voice and I have been a fan of hers for a long time. They followed Sohyang backstage after she finished her performance, and she was collapsed in an easy chair telling one of the other singers that she was so drained she was trembling. Sohyang said she broke down and cried repeatedly while practising for this performance because the song is so emotional for her. So don't worry, all the rest of us in this world cried when we first heard it too! In my 52 years on this rock i have heard this Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel masterpiece sung many ways. Singers with voices in this range are often either too shrill or very stiff and not fluid or they dont move up and down the melody as freely. They are not agile in this range. This woman has an amazing instrument and she has absolute mastery over it. My god the runs, the breath control, the vibrato, the airyness of the start to the heart piercing non shrill crispness of her power high notes.... chefs kiss!
