Sohyang is just out of this world. Her range is incredible and the way she delivers every performance with so much emotion and passion is amazing. OH MY GOSH!!!! I know nothing about this artist aside from the 3 performances I've seen which showed me her voice is an instrument. She can move it wherever in any way. Her voice and singing methods are stunning and gorgeous and amazing. I'm hearing this song for the first time and trying not to cry! Amazing. And like you mentioned, I love how much you can see her love for what she does in her face and smile thorughout her performance.
So Hyang is regarded by experienced and knowledgeable vocal coaches/teachers (not the typical "vocal coach" you see on RU-vid) as one of he greatest singers in the world today (eg John Henny Vocal Studio, Elizabeth Zharoff of the Charismatic Voice, Roberto Delli Carri, Beth Roars, etc.). She is technically perfect, yet able to sing with great emotion. She is queen of the mixed voice, vowel modification, and able to reach and sustain higher notes than most female singers. She is relatively unknown because she sings for God and people undergoing difficult times, not for fame or money (e.g., she turned down a contract with Sony). She is also very humble.
There is nobody who can pull the emotions from you like Sohyang. Everytime I here this I cry - this folk song has so much meaning to the Korean people - a song of hope, a song of unification. It always amazes me when she goes from that incredible belt to those sweet, gentle final notes. Very hard to do.
Arirang Alone is a very important cultural song for all Korean's about the split and the longing for the North and South to be one. It has great cultural significance which is why Sohyang is wearing a hanbok, traditional Korean clothes. The writer of this song has his family split between the North and the South and he wrote it to tell his children that they were not forgotten, so very emotional.
Thank you for your comment, but Arirang has been Korean traditional song long long before the recent tragic history of Korea being split. Arirang has been the representative Korean song for thousands of years along the Korean history.

I was told the songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunites, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.

Personally, I am not very familiar with the story you mentioned, which seems to infer that the author of Arirang has lived through the period when Korea has already been split. However, as I have mentioned already, the folk song Arirang has been passed down from thousands of years ago and Koreans everywhere know the song, so much so that every Korean province has its own version of Arirang, including the provinces of North Korea. Thus, I don't think there is a known author of Arirang. So if you are referring to Arirang itself, the story you've heard is not true at all, since Arirang already existed long before the Korea was split.
@@PP-wp2bx Not 'Arirang' but 'Arirang Alone'. These are two songs. The original folk song Arirang and this song 'Arirang Alone' that is newer and based upon it. The person I got this information off was Korean-or certainly had Korean letters in their name so I didn't question them. They also said "Arirang Alone is a modern adaptation (released in 1990) of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite? Dokdo is islets centrally located between Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together.

She is a very serious Christian and has a lot to do with missionary work. She also speaks I believe 4 languages. And she's an incredible artist. At 1 time she wanted to be a cartoonist for Disney. She also did the soundtrack for the Korean version of Moana. She learned her English pronunciation by watching American television and movies.

I suggest to next listen to "You Raise Me Up" if you want to be really inspired. Many of the songs she sings are to inspire and to support people (eg people undergoing difficult times). However, the the song that most people regard as one of her best masterpieces is "Everyone".

I'm pretty much a wreck, but it's okay because I had it explained to me by someone else who was reacting that I heard and it was this song. Lovely reaction on this UNESCO protected masterpiece with around 60 versions and over 3000 variations. Her arrangement and performance are epic, on her own league as most of the times.
