Obviously, Black Hole Sun is one of their most well-known songs. They've always had this strange quality like you said, makes them very unique and interesting

What a band. And don't sleep on Kim Thayil, the man is a beast. His guitar playing was a major part of Soundgarden's sound.

If you listen to the words, you will see that Chris is singing about his battle with depression. Sadly he lost that battle in 2017. 😔

RIP Chris. Such an amazing voice and talent gone too soon. Too often, listening to his music after his death, I get this strange haunting feeling knowing how much he suffered with depression. This song, among many others, and Like A Stone (by audioslave) evoke this very sad and melancholic feeling considering the sound and the lyrical content of those songs and then knowing how he passed. I definitely recommend doing Like A Stone, it's a fantastic song with great writing. and yes, soundgarden was grunge. It was one of the "big four" and one of the firsts, along with Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice In Chains. ALSO if u want to hear Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) along with some other members with Chris and some members of Soundgarden they had a brief super group called Temple of the Dog and their song Hunger Strike is really good! Chris and Eddie's vocals on one track are insane!

Not "one of the first", they were the first. Out of the big 4 to come out of Seattle, they were making music the earliest.

Listen to Mailman. It’s Chris’ emotion that he puts into his performances. That’s why he captures our hearts. Because him and his lyrics are so relatable to many of us. We will always love Chris and keep him in our hearts. Thank you. Great review.

And down the Chris Cornell rabbit hole he goes... Soundgarden are fantastic but don't forget Audioslave who's Chris plus plus Rage Against the Machine minus Zach 👍 Edit: And since others are saying it Like a Stone is a must listen. My favourite song ever and there's a lot of meaning behind it (if you know the history of Chris' life).

Yes! Chris is my fave! Soundgarden was the first grunge band to really become mainstream. They were very original and experimental. Grunge was deep and awesome! Chris was in 3 bands and was the main songwriter for all: Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave and had a great solo career in between all that and many movie soundtrack songs. Heavier Soundgarden songs that show his voice r Slaves and Bulldozers and Mailman. More mainstream radio awesome songs were Black hole sun, Spoonman, Burden in my hand. Awesome Audioslave slaves songs r I am the Highway and Like a stone. Temple of the dog was a 1 album project Chris did and Eddie Vedder is on a few songs(before PJ was even known). Chris was a friend and mentor to Eddie. The song Hunger Strike is one of the most iconic grunge songs with Chris and Eddie so u have to check that out. Awesome solo songs of his that show a totally different side are Sunshower and When I’m Down live at the Troubadour is my absolute favorite vocal of his EVER! So glad u r in a better place. It has been a rough few years. My daughter is a teenager and really struggling with depression right now so I feel for you. ✌️ and 💕 and Chris 😄 BTW the drummer, Matt Cameron became Pearl Jam’s drummer after Soundgarden broke up. Oh and Chris also does the best covers and makes them his own. Check out his cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares to you and Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. He will blow u away! Sorry for the long note. I just get so thrilled to watch people discover Chris because he brings me such joy and I really like your reactions, honesty and understanding enough about music to ‘get it’ and have great discussions about the musicianship etc.

There is a super group made up of remaining members of Rage Against the Machine, with Chris Cornell as of course the vocals.They are called Audioslave. If you want to hear Chris Cornells range, check out their song (Cochise). Be sure to watch the official video only. You will know you have the right video cause the band members arrive in a car followed by a nasty beat, it is all part of the experience, and will blow your mind. By the way I challenge you not to headbang, I bet you can't do it. RIP Chris you are missed.........

Following your comments at the beginning about production, remember some of the greatest albums of the 1990s were still recorded to tape. Slash and the Conspirators still do, not sure if anyone else does. No autotune, no adjusting timing, no playing to click tracks, and rests and space. I've been going back to more of that era (my teen/young adult music) and enjoying it more than new rock/metal.

I grew up on Soundgarden & their knack of being able to groove outwith 4/4 timing. It's a special thing! ;) 3 essential albums are Badmotorfinger(1991), Superunknown(1994), & Down on the Upside(1996). I own & still regularly listen to everything they released, but these 3 are the core of the thing for the uninitiated who may read this.... & I maintain these are *albums* & there is value in listening thru each *as an album* The Temple of the Dog album(1991) Chris Cornell did with what was to become Pearl Jam is well worth a listen too- "Hunger Strike" would be the obvious choice since it has a video showing Cornell & Vedder sharing vocal duties. Also the first Audioslave album slaps. The single "Cochise" has a video with a story- given that it was shot less than a year after 9/11, the $100k+ of fireworks let off in Sepulveda had folks in LA calling police in their hundreds asking if they were under attack!! o_O I bet somebody got their wrist slapped for that disruption LOL

Key boards and synths dominated 80s alternative; Depeche Mode, Thomas Dolby, Thompson Twins etc etc; so they have been around a long time. The 90s, alternative rock scene was breaking away from all that. Styles and music are all circular, they come back around, 💫. It's just each generation thinks it started with them.
@Fawkes318
@Fawkes318 2 года назад
Someone touched on this, but what is wild is that they released a rehersal/live version for their video. This is not the version on the album or the radio version. I think it really goes to show their talent in that this is a raw version. Not the polished studio sound you would expect to be put out for a video on MTV, which drove your band in the 90s.

80s bands and musicians like Mother Love Bone and Andrew Wood are a heavy inspiration for the grunge sound and lyrical composition style of these 90s bands. Chris’s music career was heavily inspired/catalyzed by his personal relationship with Andrew. Alice In Chains is another band that was heavily inspired and influenced by Mother Love Bone and Andrew Woods unfortunate passing.

He doesn't even listed his background in his info, I could perhaps believe it if he was raised in an Amish comuunity or something, but mate, it's Soundgarden, didn't he listen to their songs when Chris passed away? It’s not ‘layering’…it’s jGOOD ARRANGEMENT-and that’s something that comes from playing together as a group, in one garage/rehearsal space, then thousands of hours of gigging in tiny pubs, clubs, and private parties, forever refining the sound. I can’t relate to any band formed after 1998, I don’t think.
