It was great to see and hear your very first encounter with SRV! Your reaction was pure and honest. This is a tribute to Jimmi Hendrix, who was one of the influencers for SRV. SRV is one of the greatest Blues Guitar Players of all time. I find it disturbing that everyone seems to need to compare one artist to another. How can you? When each and everyone who attains such greatness because of their own talent and hard work. I was lucky enough to see SRV Live, at the Elmo and he simply blew me away. You mentioned that he was in the zone,... well, SRV plays each and every song of his with exactly the same dedication of spirit. The day my music died was when I learned of his tragic death. I have never recovered that part of my soul and probably never will. If you liked that then you gotta hear 'Texas Flood.' (Live at the El-Mocombo) I will say no more, as his performance is absolutely sure to make you insane! I'll let you be totally surprised by what he does... God Bless You SRV and may you, forever, Rest In Peace. I am pretty sure I speak for most when I say: We truly miss your talent, in this very silly world!

Stevie played the whole instrument. He was so fast with his right hand, he constantly switched back and forth between pickups while he was playing. He was so smooth about it, 99% of folks never even noticed that he did it. Watch his right hand in this performance, for example, and keep your eye on that little white switch between the center knob and the SRV letters. Stevie just about wears out the pickup selector switch.

The "three sections" you mention are the three pickups on a Fender Stratocaster, which is what Stevie was playing. They are each a row of magnets (the six black dots across each white band). Underneath the cover, each of those white things has a coil of thousands of loops of thin copper wire around it. That is how the guitar picks up (hence "pickup") the sound from the strings. You can use the switches on the front of the guitar to choose which of them you want to pick up the sound. If you choose the "neck" pickup (the one on top, closest to the neck) you get a really broad, warm, full sound. The pickup at the bridge (the bottom one that is slanted) gives a really bright sound, more like it's coming from a set of tweeters. The middle pickup falls somewhere in between. Watching this, I see several points where he switches back and forth. It's very subtle because he could do it in the course of picking up or down as he needed to and you don't really notice it unless you're watching the position of that switch the whole time. He appears to be playing on the neck pickup while singing the verses and then switching to the bridge pickup for the solo. One place you can see this very clearly is around 8:17 (of this video) he's playing the neck pickup. The white tip of the switch is in the UP position. Then RIGHT after the line "Cause I'm a Voodoo Child! God knows I'm a Voodoo Child!" (8:24-25) you see his hand sweep down and flip the switch on the front of the guitar down before playing the solo. Now the sound of the guitar is coming from that bottom row of magnets. Since they're closer to the bridge it makes the sound more "tinny" and therefore more piercing as he begins to put emphasis on individual notes of the solo instead of chords. I don't know how much sense this will make to a non-guitarist.

As a guitar player i agree, and must mention Stevie was master when it comes to adjusting his sound. He was using pickup selector and was adjusting his volume and tone pots all the time with, insane accuracy and speed. I know many players that rarely use pickup switch let alone tone knobs and this is their disadvantage.
@DougsShack
@DougsShack 2 года назад
@@emilfender7123 I think this is something that gets overlooked when people talk about Stevie's technical skills, especially in the wider general audience of listeners. His ability to fine tune his guitar mid-playing, whether it be his pickups, his tone knobs, or just literally adjusting his tuning on the head, is a masterclass of precision. He knew what sounds he wanted and knew how to get it quickly.

Thanks for the awesome SRV reaction. 🙌🏼❤️ Everyone has their favs… mine vary by genres from Led Zep to Dimash (out there in outer limits on his own merit like no other for his off the chain vocals and off the wall array of odd tunes) and THEN… there’s Mr. Blues SRV!!! THE GOAT of blues guitarists IMO. - He and the band mixed their sound with just a pinch of rock or jazz or country - depending on the tune. Most importantly and much like Dimash, SRV started playing at the age of 7 and never stopped to the day he tragically passed!!! He started failing in school by JR High because he played in a blues bar / club under age until the wee hours of the morning and slept in class. Although (unlike Dimash) SRV received an ‘F’ - failing music class and numerous other classes. SRV never learned to read music. HE DIDN’T HAVE TO, he was that good! 100% HEART & SOUL and 100% dedication at guitar, he simply dropped out of high school and started playing in bars & clubs all over Texas, then took off when Double Trouble formed with him. That sassy soul when he plays, yet he was so humble… Checkout the two everyone’s mentioning: Texas Flood, live at Malcombo and my fav LIFE WITHOUT YOU - Live at Capitol Theater. (You get to hear him speak in that one & get … just one glimpse of his personality). Pure soul and 🔥 🔥🔥 Always loved and never forgotten. We love you SRV!!! ✌🏼💜

The man is a master at his instrument. You cannot see it, but he uses the wah-wah pedal to modulate the sound or switch on / off to get that on/off effect. Throughout the performance, Stevie is constantly adjusting the 3 dials on the guitar (especially beginning and end); changing the pickup selector up or down (toggle up at 8:49 and back down at 9:50 to change the tone), and the whammy bar at the end to slightly lengthen or shorten the strings. Beyond that, he has incredible action on the strings with push-ups, pull-downs, pull-offs, and shaking the neck to get nuanced tones from base notes. The man has incredible hand strength and played a heavier gauge of guitar string to make such manipulations even more difficult than normal gauge strings. Many guitarists may be able to play similar notes and actions, but most do not have the hand strength to play this way for long periods of time.

It's called a wah-wah pedadl. He used one of Jimi's wah-wah pedals whenever he performed a Hendrix song; his brother bought it for him so he could have as authentic a sound as possible when playing his songs.

in 1984, I was stationed in Okinawa. a few days before deploying to korea, a guy on my hall brought me a cassette tape. he said that, although he did not like it, he thought I might. I left it on the table. while in Korea one night, I was shooting pool. I looked up at the tv screen above the table, and saw the video of stevie singing cold shot. thank you scott kroft

Everyone and, I do mean everyone, is gonna tell ya to react to "Texas Flood" at El Mocambo but, not me. I'll recommend "Lenny", "Riviera Paradise" and last but, certainly not least "Little Wing" another Hendrix song. Also, look for the live videos. ALWAYS "DO" STEVIE LIVE ! ! !

You asked about the guitar, it is a fender Stratocaster. The 3 pieces you were referring to are the pickups (magnetic poles that convert string vibration to electricity). You can see him flipping a switch with his right hand to change between them. That particular guitar is famous for being a hodge podge of different guitars to get what he wanted. The pickups are from a ‘59, body was a a early 60’s as well as the neck. The neck was chosen because of how thick it was due to the massive thick strings he used.

He makes the noise at 3:31 by bending the G string and using the wah pedal, the wah pedal is a pedal that when you push down on the pedal it gives wah. So what Stevie is doing is pressing on and off the wah pedal to give it that noise.

I subbed you on SRV alone. Major influences were Albert King, Jimmie Vaughan (older brother), and of course, Jimi Hendrix. Texas bluesman that came before also influenced him and his brother. Lightnin Hopkins is but one. He's from Dallas, TX. He's the GOAT of all guitar players; genre be damned, IMO. Anything from El Mocambo is fire. Voodoo Child from Austin City Limits is his best performance of that song. Without You in NJ is fire. A bit of insanity is Voodoo Child in Nashville. Tin Pan Alley with Johnny Copeland is amazing, too. Watch him play with Albert King is lovely. Albert claimed him as a son...and Albert was as mean a man as you could have met. Bluesmen respected him, but he wasn't liked, and he didn't like many. He loved Stevie from the beginning. Live performance is so much more gratifying than recorded with Stevie. His recorded are perfect, but it's live where his soul shines. Pipeline with his brother Jimmie is sweet and poignant as much as it is a pleasure to watch. They loved each other more than people realize. There was some rivalry...Jimmie is the older brother and almost famous outside of blues. Their rivalry was more hurt than anger, I think. They had a brutal life growing up. Jimmie ran away at 14 from home. Stevie left when he was 17. Father was a brutal alcoholic who beat the entire family, often. Father saw no value in either of his sons' love of guitar. Both brothers were alcoholics before 8. Both were drug addicts in Austin. Both got clean. Stevie was clean 4 years before he died. Stevie had Jimmie in on ANYTHING important, including George Bush I inaugurational ball. Family Style is their album together and has stuff that is totally unlike either Vaughan Brother. Jimmie still lives and performs...no where near the fame of his brother...but he has a solid fan base (including me) and genuine respect of the bluesmen past and present, living and dead. Stevie died August 27, 1990 in a helicopter crash when he took a seat meant for Jimmie after playing with Eric Clapton, etc. You can read up on Stevie's life and death. He was a legend before he died and is more so, now. Eric Clapton had emotional meltdowns listening to Stevie and contemplated quitting music after he heard him. BB said he wanted to sit in the audience and learn from Stevie as well as BB saying he played blues in sentences, and Stevie played in paragraphs. David Bowie discovered him and had him do most of the guitar on Let's Dance. They split acrimoniously over recording and touring issues, personal and business. There's not a lot of music out there from Stevie. He died just as he was hitting his stride. Like a falling star, he burned hot and was gone. There's no one like him and never will be again in a thousand years. Gifted with music and couldn't read a note. Flunked out of music theory and high school...yet the higher powers poured through him. Clapton called him a channel...like a Sufi Mystic. I am going to enjoy you discovering Stevie. You may very well weep in grief, too. Many reacting have had that moment of despondency and despair knowing he is gone and too soon...and that painful what if...

Talking about how he made it make 'that sound' while not strumming. I believe that was Stevie's overdrive pedal (Tubescreamer), and he's stepping on it, turning it on and off over and over quickly. So you get boosted, not boosted, boosted sound.

You might have heard that riff at the beginning because this song was written/performed by Jimi Hendrix...Stevie added his own twist to it but the bones are still there. Both Jimi and Stevie Ray were GOATs...may they both R.I.P..

Are you amazed? You better be. 'Cause i still am and i've watched/listened to this video near a hundred times. And i knew this song growing up from it's author/player, Jimi Hendrix, RIP. And Jimi is probably up there still being amazed every time he hears it. Or else he's maybe jammin' with SRV right now. Mercy, Stevie!!! What you called 3 sections: those white vertical little boxes are pick-ups. Pick-ups are to guitar strings what a microphone is to a voice. They pick up the resonating frequency (tone) of the strings and send it as an electrical signal to an amplifier which turns it back into audible sound. But louder. Before the signals leave the guitar, they can be altered tonally with controls just below the strings. 'Hope that helps. Oh, you'll want to check out Stevie's TEXAS FLOOD Live At The El Macombo. Great reaction, btw. Peace -

The original song is by Jimi Hendrix. Jimi was one of Stevie’s Idols, so this song is a cover but with a Stevie twist to it. The noise/scratching song is from a foot pedal known as a Wah-Wah Pedal, thats why you see Stevie stepping on something or bending down. Also you’re right Hulk Hogan used a version of Voodoo Child during the WCW days and early 2000’s.

The guitar is a fender stratocaster the three different sections are pickups SVR used a special type of pickup called a Texas swing pickup, he also used 13 gauge strings to get the right tone that he preferred other players compared them to cables because they are so hard to bend ,which svr made it look simple .the song voodoo Child was written by jimi Hendrix SVR's idol he made the song his ,as they say as a tribute to the greatest guitar player in the world, svr plays a few more of Jimi's songs. Check them out (little wing) Tim in SC.
