In 1973 Stevie Wonder suffered head injuries in a car wreck that left him in a coma for four days. This song was on the album released that year. I remember the words feeling like he was describing being given a second chance at life. That's what this song sounds like to me.

This song is about a near death experience he had where he saw the bad things he had done in a previous life. I guess his point is some things never change, but you can always change your own behavior for the better.

@brandonrobinson5595 OK, you’re right. I just read this quote from him on Wiki: “I would like to believe in reincarnation. I would like to believe that there is another life. I think that sometimes your consciousness can happen on this earth a second time around. For me, I wrote "Higher Ground" even before the accident. But something must have been telling me that something was going to happen to make me aware of a lot of things and to get myself together. This is like my second chance for life, to do something or to do more, and to value the fact that I am alive.”

Oh wow. There are so many great songs by Stevie Wonder. Anything from Songs In The Key of Life album is fantastic. Stevie signed with Motown when he was 11 years old and he went by Little Stevie Wonder. By 13 he was writing hit songs. One song he wrote for Aretha Franklin called Until You Come Back To Me is another great one and was a hit for Aretha. He was 14 when he gave it to her. When he signed with Motown they said he was like a sponge and just absorbed all the musical talent that surrounded him. He learned how to play almost every instrument the Funk Brothers played. He simply is a musical genius and a national treasure. Thanks for reacting to him and hope you consider many more that he did. 👍👍😊

While this song was recorded in 1973, it is not time stamped with the sound of the 70s. If you really get into Stevie’s music, he keep his sound fresh by not giving it the signature of that decade, with the exception of what he did in the 1960s. That is a sign of a genius!

This is from the second phase of his recording career where Stevie is writing, producing, arranging, making the coffee ... His output in the 1970s is truly remarkable 💯 Of course, quite a few of the records from the 1960s were pretty good too but he was part of the Motown production factory, albeit slightly divorced. IMHO the changeover point was the track "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)". Funkier, more complex and produced by Stevie. As for me, I bought "Fingertips" in 1963 (boy, am I old) and still have the 45. Asia, BJ: You should react to both "Fingertips" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" and hear the change from child prodigy to adult.
