The video is iconic Americana. He's driving through the American west, gas stations, 3 wheeling, Motown dancers, etc. They are British and were trying to break into the US charts. So they were appealing to an American audience. That's my take on the video.

Problem with comparing prices 40 years ago is that $1 today was only worth 33 cents then, so wages were a third what they are now. Of course, real estate was much cheaper then so people could afford to buy homes unlike today.
