I second that emotion! As an old white guy that hated this music when it came out, and I was playing heavy metal guitar in high school. This music was always in the background somewhere, sometime, as I ignored and moved along. Now it just reminds me of being young, and feeling like there might be magic somewhere somehow, before cynicism took away my youthful thinking and possibilities. Watching these guys hear and see what we did so long ago,almost made me feel like I could reach out to them and my former self, and shake hands or something.
@BeeWhistler

I've been playing it for my kids. We watched Real Genius and they took an interest in the soundtrack. Of course, they like 80s music better than I do... a lot of it just reminds me of puberty and I don't need that in my life.

"He's got that distinct voice" One thing you'll notice as you listen to '80s New Wave music is that there was a LOT more tolerance for singers with unique voices than there is today. Colin Hay (Men at Work), Bonnie Tyler, Green Gartside (Scritti Politti), Annie Lennox (Eurythmics), Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats), Elvis Costello, Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran), Thomas Dolby, Cyndi Lauper, Howard Jones . . .

My friend and I who grew up in the 80's agree that this song somehow captures the feel of being a kid in that time period. You guys are giving a gift to all of us looking for commonalities in a time of division and you are being given a gift with so many people sharing their musical memories with you. You have heard far more styles of music than the average person will in a lifetime and I like to think you and all of us watching have a bigger perspective for it. Thanks for what you do :)

I just commented that too! West End Girls reminds me of my parents. They got married in 1985 and always played 80s, specifically European 80s as they were in the US army stationed in (former) West Berlin. Even though I’m a young millennial at 25 y/o, 80s music is nostalgic to my childhood and reminds me of my parents. Plus, it’s just straight bangers. West End Girls also reminds me of high school playing GTA5 with friends and the “pop” radio in game would play West End Girls

@@xirknight @Whateva I can remember taking my old beat up acoustic guitar out of my locker, to go outside for lunch so I could get stoned with my friends, and impress them playing Diary of a madman, Fade to black, and the acoustic parts of any Iron maiden songs I knew (Revelations comes to mind). Meanwhile, cars are driving by, some were playing the newly released Master of puppets, and some were playing new wave and punk rock. I ended up making some other friends and bringing my (I wish I was Yngwie Malmsteen guitar style) to a new wave band for a while. It was just a great time to be alive, agreat time to have so many kinds of good quality thoughtful music in friendly competition. These, among many others, were the soundtrack of our lives/

The eighties was a good ERA but the 70s was the best! During the 1970s, 98% of the music was still being played by real instruments, full bands, and songs were being sung are people who could actually sing. You still have music groups like The Stylistics, the shi-lites The Commodores, brick, the Dazz Band, the Isley Brothers, The O'Jays, The Spinners, the Brothers Johnson, The Bar-Kays, Heatwave, need I go on? By the way, if you haven't heard of these groups, these are all excellent groups for you to sample. If you're looking for some great solo artist, I suggest Helen Reddy, Phyllis Hyman, Jeffrey Osborne as a solo artist as well as with his time with LTD Phyllis Hyman, Lou Rawls, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Gino Vannelli. There's many more but I can't name them all. Start with a few of these and you'll end up finding many many more.

Saw this band in concert in the early 90s after their fame had faded a bit, but it was easily one of THE best concerts I have ever seen. When they played their big hits and especially when they played this song extended and it literally had every single person jamming, jumping and dancing in their seats. Much of the music from the past decades seems to have much deeper meaning in the lyrics imo.

And if you haven't explored Pet Shop Boys and Erasure, get cracking! Also: One great thing about your channel is that it's a reason to look at the music videos, 99% of which I ignored back in the day. This one is basically a road trip from LA to the Coachella Valley. The dinosaurs are in Cabazon (home of the world's best outlet mall), about 20 miles west of Palm Springs, and the three-wheelers are no doubt from Anza Borrego Dunes, about 20 miles SE of Palm Springs.
