House parties, clubs, dances, kickbacks, joyriding, bbq's, cleaning up the house,, reunions, etc. We danced hard to this and everyone was slim back then. There was no limit as to when or where to listen to this uplifting music!!! Good times... Gotta love the twins❣
I changed over to country dancing but then they closed down my fav dive. Only places worth dancing are broke in, like a pair of shoes, and a bit grimy. The nice, clean modern places are full of fake cowboy/girls that I have a constant urge to force feed a Big Mac and a large shake to the chicks. Those girls are no Brick Houses, more like a Twigs Swaying in the Breeze
Right?! I was explaining to my husband, just yesterday, that their personalities are different but watching Tim get into it and and talking about going to school after listening to this is a perfect example. He's going to watch this for sure now!
sylvia timoney glad you asked cuz Fat Larry’s Zoom was cool too. But the one from Commodores is a totally different song. Along with “Easy,” it’s also the one that first showcased Lionel Richie’s talents as hit- making songwriter.
Lionel Ritchie’s mom was so mad at him for this song, because the expression is “built like a brick sh*t house.” They used the horn in place of the cuss word. She said to her son, “Now how can I hold my head up in church when you all are singing about brick.. houses?!”
@@jamesstrickland6831 However, he is singing, along with the rest of the band, on it. He is also one of the songwriters for it. I don't know if the story of his mom is apocryphal or not, but it is amusing.
They don't realize that when these songs came out, the only option was listening to them on the radio in your car or in the home or club. There was no mobile device you carried to school with you.
tafkap01 true, me neither but i had one, so i just thought to say it’s possible. But before walkmans nobody was really doing their personal music thing. After, tho, lookout!
I have to tell you my story , one of my favorites. My oldest sister and I were eating breakfast at a waffle house in Memphis on Brooks Rd. About 1 ml. From Graceland in the 70's. We were Alone and in walks a group of black guys. Eventually we look up, my sister Says" isn't that Lionel Richey" And I said "Yeah , and that is Smokey Robinson! " We all laughed. Lionel pointed and said "The Commadores" we like to fell out. I Said "Detroit in the house!!" We all started laughing. We told them how we were born in Detroit too, and loved Motown. My sister is crazy, and said I can't believe we are eating breakfast with you guys, if you don't mind I am telling everybody that. Lionel said what do you have on your plate, she said, a piece of bacon. He said well, I have a piece of toast. Let's trade, and you won't be lying. Lol. We talked to all of them for about an Hour, we laughed. They were so sweet and down to earth. I have always loved me some Smokey. He is so smooth. Later that night we and some friends went to Mud Island in the middle of MS River and sat on blankets in the grass next to the outdoor stage. We had the best seats in the house. Great time. Only in Memphis. Have danced to the song many times . Love these guys. Peace .
OMG!!! YOU'RE FINALLY DOING IT!!!!!! Edit- I watched and it was awesome! I'm kinda old so I used to roller skate to this when I was a kid. It's an all time fav, and my ringtone! I'm dying to see you do Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry! Talk about funk?!?!?!!!!😁👍
@@littledoughgirl62 Hey, if you want to own this song, own it girl!! Use to tell my daughter when I WAS sporting a bikini in my late 40's that everytime this song came on, it was my THEME song!! Lol. 😅😅😝😜😜
Do true. I remember cleaning and had to stop as a kid to just dance. Momma yelling cut that down. LOL. Foot times/memories. Thank y'all for this! Bringing so many memories back
"Brick House" was also *hugely* popular at roller skating rinks in the 70s, along with some of the other songs you've already covered like "YMCA" (yes, we all spelled the letters with our arms), "Staying Alive," and "I Will Survive."
@@starshake8998 most young people would know who Lionel Richie just from him hosting on American Idol for the past few seasons. Not from his time with the Commodores. They don't know what they missed.
As a woman, the best time to play this song is when we're getting dressed up to go out dancing. Gotta strike those final poses in the mirror to check you look. 😉 This song makes any tall or full-figured woman feel confident and ready to strut.
Some more classic funky bangers: "Don't Look Any Further" - Dennis Edwards, "Candy" - Cameo, “Play That Funky Music” - Wild Cherry, “She’s a Bad Mamma Jamma” - Carl Carlton, "Automatic" - Pointer Sisters, and "Mary Jane" - Rick James.
I grew up listening to the best funk, soul, r&b and still do at 60 years old!! I love watching you guys checking out all the different songs and your reactions. The Commodores, Brick House is a guaranteed dance tune even when I driving, walking the dog, cleaning the house....No Way to hold it together when this song's on! Thanks for what you do guys.
Loved to dance to this at parties, car dancing to it. It was on the radio. At one time FM Radio was a privledge. Not every place had it. FM brought us all a bigger variety of music that you might not have heard where you lived. I didn't understand what this song meant till my boyfriend(husband now 41yrs) explained it was about a well built girl. Hahahaha.
@@rosef8091 the lyrics explained the meaning. Back then if a woman's body measurements to be a brick house 36, 24, 36 AKA a coke cola bottle shaped. You're right they didn't get it.
They even had cable radio back then. My parents had cable radio, and we got FM stations from 75 miles away. That’s funny people didn’t know what it was about. I was a child when it came out and used to listen to it. I always knew what it was about. This and the song Humpin’. I knew that referred to sex, even in grade school. Imagine my confusion and shock when I started to hear Wednesday’s called “hump day”.
Bless your hearts - Ya'll so young. Guessing you've never heard "she's built like a brick schit house" which means she has a great figure. It was always a great party song - Danced The Bump to it. The guys got together while students at Tuskegee Univ.
Man I just love y'all reactions listening to these old school songs. I am 62 years old growing up listening to these songs is history and so glad y'all are appreciating these wonderful songs. Keep looking up because that's where it all is!
Man, this was THE JAM back in tha day! I danced to it 1000 times at least 💃 We actually went to the club and danced for hours and hours.....and hours 😄
This comes from the expression "She's built like a brick sh**house", which is a compliment to a woman's physique. It means she has a good build. That's why the long pause between 'brick' and 'house'. They are implying the missing word without saying it.
@Kristina Winter @Jack Bauer "36 - 24 - 36" and "built like an Amazon" refer to her whole figure, not just her bust. From Lionel himself -- "But what exactly is a brick house? Richie, whose 66th birthday is Saturday, said that the term was a shortened take on the term "built like a brick s***house," meaning solidly built, especially in reference to a woman." www.al.com/entertainment/2015/06/the_story_of_brick_house_lione.html
I was thick in high school my boyfriend used to follow me around with his friends and sing this song he did this for almost a year until I agreed to go out with him.it bc was so embarrassing!
There's an old slang expression "built like a brick shithouse" that meant someone was stacked. When people danced to this in clubs everybody would shout "Shit!" In the pause between brick and house. That pause was necessary because language like that was not acceptable in popular music at the time.
HinduHillbilly Thanks HHbilly! I was wondering how far down the comments I’d have to go ‘til somebody ‘splained it to these boys. Thought it might be up to me. You did it ... more nicely!
I was waiting to cross in a crosswalk when a car stop to let me cross and with the windows down they blasted brick house. when I reached to other side the whole car erupted in applause 💕
"Brick House" gets played whenever and wherever classic funk is needed. Party? Brick House. Cleaning? Brick House. Wife giving birth? Brick House. (I'd guess, anyway.) You need some more Commodores. Try "Sail On," "Zoom," and especially "Easy."
I wanna know who the hell called this disco so they get get knocked out. This is the epitome of funk. People that don't know shit shouldn't talk man. It's insulting to those who know AND to the artists who made the music.
This is a wedding reception dance “Must Playlist.” My wife is one of those shy ladies who comes out of her shell and hits the floor when this song comes on💃🏾❗️
" Brick House" is a lady ,woman,or girl that is physically well built. That's a terminology from the 70's and beyond. This was a party starter but also in the 70's in your car blasting this and rolling in your car or at the park on your boom box. I was in my last year of high school
'Brick House' was what the guys called a beautiful, well endowed lady back in the day ;) When I was a little kid, I didn't know what this song was about, I just knew I loved beat and the vocals! You'd hear it at the roller rink all the time - tie on your skates and you can't help but groove while skating around lol :)
People were bumping this was almost everywhere. Park, Car Wash, Skating Rink, and of course Making love. There was nowhere we didn't have this going, except church...maybe.
Fellas, check out these jams by The Commodores: “Just To Be Close To You”, “Sweet Love”, “Zoom”, “Three Times A Lady” and “Slippery When Wet”. Thanks guys.
I saw The Commodores 1978 at Hammersmith Odeon, London . During this song, a woman walked onto the stage in a fur coat.... dropped it ...she was wearing a bikini... and danced.
You need to put on your stank face to sing the “house” part. I was in high school and this was all about girls who’e physically well -endowed. Just a great party song when you’re all dressed up and getting down in the disco.
