This group The dells was put in the Guinness world book of records for the note held the longest at that time did you know this thank you for the good work keep it up.
The Dells' two incredible lead singers were Marvin Junior (baritone) and Johnny Carter (first tenor, on the right). They traded lead on many of their songs. Not long after both of them died -- Carter in 2009 and Junior in 2013, the group stopped performing.
I will have to say I had the privilege of seeing them once at the Fox Theater in Detroit and kept a smile on my face from start to finish...another good song by them # give your baby a standing ovation
@@marywilson1442 Grew up listening to these guys. One of my favorite songs was a song my dad would play when he was feeling especially amorous about my mom lol--it’s called Super Woman. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KEHDlXrah3M.html
...and you guys can't comprehend the quantity and quality of music that was created in my generation, jazz, R&B, soul, British invasion, rock, etc. You can keep your Hip-hop, Rap music, Cardio B....and that stallion wench. ...and I'll keep mine. "Oh What A Night" & "Stay In My Corner" are a couple of the mighty Dells songs you will want to check out. We last saw them perform in a packed venue in Los Angeles. My husband & family are from Harvey IL (I worked there) where the Dells grew up and lived so they are close to everyone's musical hearts . They started singing in high school in 1952. One of them lived in the back house where a cousin used to live in Harvey. Back in the 1950's it was a great to go to a house party where the young Dells would sing & my late hubby (who would be 82) got to tag along with his older sister or their mother wouldn't let her go. The Dells sang their soulful heart out for 60 years and their catalog of songs are here to stay & enjoy.
I love how they harmonize! The audience seems totally transfixed! Afros/Naturals were all the rage and the bigger the better. They were huge! I'm thinking of the activist Angela Davis. She knew how to rock it!
You can't be their eloquent and perfect pitch. When you dream of great memories think of their musical, talents and dramatic delicious delivery 🚚😁 perfection
Great choice! One of my favorite oldie but goodie songs! The movie “The Five Heartbeats” was loosely based on their story. This song is on the soundtrack.
John E. Carter was an American doo-wop and R&B singer. He was a founding member of The Flamingos and a member of The Dells. Both groups have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making Carter one of the few multiple inductees. Wikipedia Born: June 2, 1934, Chicago, IL Died: August 21, 2009, Harvey, IL
OMG! This is one of my ALL-TIME favorite songs and groups! My dad used to play it and I would pick up a fork or spoon and sing this song. I especially like the part where they hold Baaaaaaabbay. 😀🎼🎤❤️
I was born in 78 but my father is from Chicago and has the pleasure to see then perform since they are from Harvey ill a suburb of Chicago. This is my father's fav song
One of the great groups. The Mighty Dells The Four Tops The Tempting Temptations The Mighty, Mighty O'Jays Each group had at least one monster ballad considered a staple at Black gatherings.
Hey guys. The Dells were absolutely amazing for sure! Those voices! This is one of those last dance songs at the club 🙂. Beautiful. Thank you for the memories
Love that you went back so far. While you’re there, PLEASE PLEASE react to The Four Tops “Reach Out (I’ll Be There).” That song is from the Cooley High soundtrack- a cult classic.
I love it that you are reviewing real music. I lived those songs and wore that fro. This was my favorite song by them. And I love how they did this on a live show. I use to sing this song all the time. Beautiful! Loves songs are the best! Thank you for reviewing them.❤️❤️❤️
Hey Tim and Fred! That's how Afros looked in the 70's. 😂 There was no tapering. You'd braid your hair at night and use your Afro pick to pick it out in the morning. 😃
LOL.....BACK IN THE DAY, IN ORDER TO BE A LEAD SINGER IN A MAJOR R&B GROUP, YOU HAD TO BE ABLE TO HIT, "THAT NOTE". IF YOU COULDN'T, YOU HAD TO BE IN THE BACKGROUND.😜
My all time, of all history, FAVORITE group, the mighty Dells. Each of those voices unique like a band of instruments. One sounds like a trumpet, one sounds like a sax, one sounds like an upright bass, one sounds like a violin, and one sounds like a muscle car engine revving. ❤
There are actually 2 still alive. That is Mickey McGill & Verne Allison. They are both in their 80’s. Verne is the yellow one. And you can see Micky about the 3rd. one. Yes, Marvin Junior, the 1 holding the note! That was his greatest attribute. And I don’t think there’s anyone else to do that!!! Yes, & LOVE you guys for appreciating good music, like I do!!!
Magnificent!!💯. Takes me back to being 23yrs. I ,was in my last year of Nursing Classes at FISK University. Reminds me of going to the Homecoming Dance when this Classic Song came out on the Chart's. Good memories that will last me as long as I live.💗❤️🌹
Oh, man!! I've always loved The Dells!! I grew up in the 70s and loved watching Soul Train. I also loved those big, round afros!! I love "Oh What A Night" by The Dells from 1969. 💜
The Dells (as well as the group 'After 7') were the real voices of The Five Heartbeats, in the movie of the same name. The banter, in this video, looks like a scene in the movie.
I was 11 years old & I don't really remember them, but they've got powerful voices!!!!! They almost remind me of The Spinners back in the day. It's great to see you, Tim & Fred interested in their lyrics & style of R&B. That's a special art to hold onto one note like the one guy did for quite a while, lol!!!! 😎👍🏼☮️❤️
They are from Harvey Illinois they was inducted in the Rock and roll hall of fame i think 5 years ago or so. If you ever seen the movie five heartbeats they were the voices behind the songs
The Dell's were before even my time. But this was when music was real music. 100% pure singing and %100 instrumentals. No remixing and all the stuff that makes today's music sound so good and sometimes even fake. No swear words either. 😁
That’s my flavor of music right there. Real R&B music. Growing up in the 70’s man there was so many great groups that had their own unique sound. So we have YT to revisit live performances and the recordings of music from that era. Today’s music just don’t come close. I’m so blessed to have experienced all that great music in real time. Thanks guys.
Thanks for the appreciation of us "old heads'" music. They tell a story; a story of love and you can BET... your grandma and grandpa utilized the musical melodies to facilitate your mom & dads' existence. 👍
Actually "Stay In My Corner" by The Dells was released in 1965. We must stay true to our craft and ability, and reintroduce this type of quality to this generation.
Hi Twins. It's Lady Anita. You going waaaaaay back for these true old school. Thank you, thank you. They "sang" this song and he held that note. Legendary, Legendary Kings. They are right there with some other Legendary Kings, The Ojays, The Stylistics, The Spinners, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Harold Melvin, and the Blue Notes. Classic, Classic smooth sounds. Thanks again for reacting.
